Cognitive radio is a key technology to improve spectrum utilization. A major challenge in cognitive radio networks is spectrum sensing, which detects if a spectrum band is being used by a primary user. Spectrum sensing plays a critical role in cognitive radio networks. However, spectrum sensing is vulnerable to security attacks from malicious users. In this dissertation, we propose a malicious user detection scheme, a density based SSDF detection scheme, a conjugate prior based SSDF detection scheme, and an anti-jamming algorithm to achieve robust and secure cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. Performance analysis and simulation results show that our proposed schemes can achieve very good performance in detecting malicious users, excluding abnormal sensing reports, and defending the jamming attack, thus improve spectrum sensing performance in cognitive radio networks.

Book excerpt: Cognitive radio refers to the technology that the devices can intelligently access unused frequency resources which are originally reserved for legacy services in order to increase the spectrum utilization. At the mean time, the legacy services should not be affected by the access of cognitive radio devices. The common problems in cognitive radio are how to find unused frequency resources (spectrum sensing) and how to access them (spectrum accessing). This dissertation focuses on the robust methods of spectrum sensing as well as spectrum accessing strategies with the statistics of channel availabilities. The first part of the thesis studies non-parametric robust hypothesis testing problem to eliminate the effect of the uncertainty and instability introduced by non-stationary noise, which is constantly observed in communication systems. An empirical likelihood ratio test with density function constraints is proposed. This test outperforms many popular goodness-of-fit tests, including the robust Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and the Cramér-von Mises test, etc. Examples using spectrum sensing data with real-world noise samples are provided to show their performance. The second part focuses on channel idle time distribution based spectrum accessing strategies. Through the study of the real-world wireless local area network traffic, it is identified that the channel idle time distribution can be modeled using hyper-exponential distribution. With this model, the performance of a single cognitive radio, or the secondary user, is studied when the licensed user, or the primary user, does not react to interference. It is also shown that with the complete information of the hyper-exponential distribution, the secondary user can achieve a desirable performance. But when the model exhibits uncertainty and time non-stationarity, which would happen for any kind of wireless traffic, the secondary user suffers from huge performance loss. A strategy that is robust to the uncertainty is proposed. The performance of this strategy is demonstrated using experimental data. Another aspect of the problem is when the PU is reactive. In this case, a spectrum accessing strategy is devised to avoid large-duration interference to the PU. Additionally, the spectrum accessing strategies are also extended to the cognitive radio networks with multiple secondary users. A decentralized MAC protocol is devised which reaches a total secondary capacity performance close to the optimal. A discussion of the engineering aspects with practical consideration of spectrum sensing and accessing is given at the end.

Book excerpt: Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) are a next generation neTtwork that is expected to solve the wireless spectrum shortage problem, which is the shrinking of available wireless spectrum resources needed to facilitate future wireless applications. The first CRN standard, the IEEE 802.22, addresses this particular problem by allowing CRNs to share geographically unused TV spectrum to mitigate the spectrum shortage. Equipped with reasoning and learning engines, cognitive radios operate autonomously to locate unused channels to maximize its own bandwidth and Quality-of-Service (QoS). However, their increased capabilities over traditional radios introduce a new dimension of security threats. In an NSF 2009 workshop, the FCC raised the question, "What authentication mechanisms are needed to support cooperative cognitive radio networks? Are reputation-based schemes useful supplements to conventional Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) authentication protocols?" Reputation-based schemes in cognitive radio networks are a popular technique for performing robust and accurate spectrum sensing without any inter-communication with licensed networks, but the question remains on how effective they are at satisfying the FCC security requirements. Our work demonstrates that trust-based Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) protocols are vulnerable to rogue signals, which creates the illusion of inside attackers and raises the concern that such schemes are overly sensitive Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS). The erosion of the sensor reputations in trust-based CSS protocols makes CRNs vulnerable to future attacks. To counter this new threat, we introduce community detection and cluster analytics to detect and negate the impact of rogue signals on sensor reputations.

Book excerpt: Cognitive radios are currently presented as the solution to the ever-increasing spectrum shortage problem. However, their increased capabilities over traditional radios introduce a new dimension of security threats. Cooperative Spectrum Sensing (CSS) has been proposed as a means to protect cognitive radio networks from the well known security threats: Primary User Emulation (PUE) and Spectrum Sensing Data Falsification (SSDF). I demonstrate a new threat to trust-based CSS protocols, called the Rogue Signal Framing (RSF) intrusion. Rogue signals can be exploited to create the illusion of malicious sensors which leads to the framing of innocent sensors and consequently, their removal from the shared spectrum sensing. Ultimately, with fewer sensors working together, the spectrum sensing is less robust for making correct spectrum access decisions. The simulation experiments illustrate the impact of RSF intrusions which, in severe cases, shows roughly 40\% of sensors removed. To mitigate the RSF intrusion's damage to the network's trust, I introduce a new defense based on community detection from analyzing the network's Received Signal Strength (RSS) diversity. Tests show a 95\% damage reduction in terms of removed sensors from the shared spectrum sensing, thus retaining the benefits of CSS protocols.

In multi-taper spectrum sensing, regular detection of unused spectrum holes is performed to make cognitive radio networks aware of users' ctivities. As a result, more effective spectrum management is expected and unlicensed users could use unused spectrum holes. In this thesis, an analytical study was proposed in which reliable, simple, and computationally efficient mathematical expressions for the mean and variance of the probability density function (PDF) of the multitaper spectrum sensing techniques were derived. The proposed analytical study was evaluated by intensive simulations using MATLAB. The presence of Additive White Gaussian Noise is assumed. Many important aspects of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks are included such as, receiver operating characteristics, detection rate versus signal to noise ratio (SNR), and the minimum required sample points for a specific performance. All simulations were performed to include most factors affecting the efficiency of the proposed sensing methodology such as, number of tapers (K), number of sample points (N), and the probability of false alarm (Pf). A comparison with energy detection method was done. All simulation results and comparisons confirm that the proposed model is reliable and robust under all factors considered in the simulation.
