Book excerpt: The story of the British commander who led a three-hundred-mile march from Kabul to Kandahar and became the toast of Victorian England. This book examines the role of Frederick Roberts in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, culminating in his famous march in 1880 with ten thousand British and Indian soldiers, covering three hundred miles in twenty-three days, from Kabul to Kandahar to defeat the Afghan army of Ayub Khan, pretender to the Amirship of Kabul. The march made Roberts one of late Victorian England’s great military heroes, partly because of the achievement itself, partly because the victory restored British prestige after defeat, and finally because of Roberts’ astute use of the press to puff his victory. This overcame the earlier damage done to his reputation by the political storm that followed his hanging of over eighty Afghans in revenge for the massacre of a British envoy and his escort. It enabled the liberal Viceroy of India, Lord Ripon, to extract his forces from an Afghan imbroglio with prestige restored and an emir on the Afghan throne who for thirty-nine years maintained friendship with British India. Roberts (or Bobs as he was known) subsequently advanced to command the Indian Army, working closely with future viceroys to influence Indian defense policy on the North-West Frontier, and being hymned by Rudyard Kipling, poet of empire. His bestselling autobiography, Forty-One Years in India, established his image before the British public and he remains one of Britain’s best known, if least understood, military figures

Book Lord Roberts K G V C Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lord Roberts K G V C Classic Reprint written by Owen Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lord Roberts, K. G., V. C One has to begin at the beginning, however, and those who are fond of dates will doubtless be ih terested to learn that the future field-marshal was born on September 3oth, 1832, not quite hye years before Queen Victoria, whom he was afterwards to serve so well, came to the throne. Both his father and his mother (a very beautiful woman) were Irish. The former, as we shall see, was a fine soldier of the old East India Company's Army, who afterwards became General Sir Abraham Roberts, g.c.b. Roberts was born at Cawnpore, which he was to revisit twenty-five years later under very tragic circumstances. He was brought home to England at the age of two, and, when two years later, his parents returned to India, they left their child, as many Anglo - klian fathers and mothers are obliged to do, in the care of friends. N owadays the separation is seldom a very long one. In the case of little Frederick Sleigh Roberts an interval eight years was to elapse before he saw his father again. Book The South African War reappraised

Download or read book The South African War reappraised written by Donal Lowry and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neo-classical troopers' memorial of New Zealand, together with others around the former British Empire, illustrates the manner in which the South African War became a major imperial. This book explores how South Africa is negotiating its past in and through various modes of performance in contemporary theatre, public events and memorial spaces. Opinion on the war was as divided among white Afrikaners, Africans, 'Coloureds' and English-speaking white South Africans as these communities were from each other. The book analyses the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as a live event and as an archive asking throughout how the TRC has affected the definition of identity and memory in contemporary South Africa, including disavowed memories. It surveys a century of controversy surrounding the origins of the war and in particular the argument that gold shaped British policy towards the Transvaal in the drift towards war. The remarkable South African career of Flora Shaw, the first woman to gain a professional position on The Times, is portrayed in the book. The book also examines the expensive operation mounted by The Times in order to cover the war. While acknowledging the need not to overstress the role of personality, the book echoes J. A. S. Grenville in describing the combination of Milner and Chamberlain as a 'fateful partnership'. Current renegotiations of popular repertoires, particularly songs and dances related to the struggle, revivals of classic European and South African protest plays, new history plays and specific racial and ethnic histories and identities, are analysed.
