Download or read book The Roads to Congress 2020 written by Sean D. Foreman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes changes to campaigning and voting in the United States in 2020. The global pandemic caused by COVID-19 upended traditional campaign strategies, posed unprecedented challenges to candidates, and possessed the potential to fundamentally alter how campaigns think about running for office. At the same time, the Trump administration’s divisive handling of twin crises stemming from the pandemic and rising racial tensions loomed over congressional races as the most disruptive election cycle in living memory. The ramifications of the 2020 congressional elections for the direction of public policy in America—and perhaps for American democracy itself—cannot be overstated. The Roads to Congress 2020 examines key House and Senate campaigns, candidates, and controversies in the 2020 election to reveal what accounts for the outcomes and point the way to America’s political future.
Download or read book Right of Way written by Angie Schmitt and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2020-08-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The face of the pedestrian safety crisis looks a lot like Ignacio Duarte-Rodriguez. The 77-year old grandfather was struck in a hit-and-run crash while trying to cross a high-speed, six-lane road without crosswalks near his son’s home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was one of the more than 6,000 people killed while walking in America in 2018. In the last ten years, there has been a 50 percent increase in pedestrian deaths. The tragedy of traffic violence has barely registered with the media and wider culture. Disproportionately the victims are like Duarte-Rodriguez—immigrants, the poor, and people of color. They have largely been blamed and forgotten. In Right of Way, journalist Angie Schmitt shows us that deaths like Duarte-Rodriguez’s are not unavoidable “accidents.” They don’t happen because of jaywalking or distracted walking. They are predictable, occurring in stark geographic patterns that tell a story about systemic inequality. These deaths are the forgotten faces of an increasingly urgent public-health crisis that we have the tools, but not the will, to solve. Schmitt examines the possible causes of the increase in pedestrian deaths as well as programs and movements that are beginning to respond to the epidemic. Her investigation unveils why pedestrians are dying—and she demands action. Right of Way is a call to reframe the problem, acknowledge the role of racism and classism in the public response to these deaths, and energize advocacy around road safety. Ultimately, Schmitt argues that we need improvements in infrastructure and changes to policy to save lives. Right of Way unveils a crisis that is rooted in both inequality and the undeterred reign of the automobile in our cities. It challenges us to imagine and demand safer and more equitable cities, where no one is expendable.

This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The People's Republic of China implemented the Fuel Tax Reform in 2009. It abolished a range of provincial and local government fees and increased the central government tax on motor vehicle fuel. This reform centralized the government revenues for the sector, but various issues remain. This publication analyzes the implications of the reform on the operation and maintenance of ordinary roads. It recommends the formation of a National Road and Funding Administration, responsible for the national road programs and policy, and the creation of a central road trust fund to finance the operation and maintenance of ordinary roads.
Download or read book Roads to COVID 19 Containment and Spread written by Leon Robertson and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-03-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight democratic countries traversed the road to remarkable containment of COVID-19 in 2020-2021, five without economically damaging shutdowns. During the first two years of the pandemic, the United States and the United Kingdom each had COVID-19 death rates per population 6 times higher than any one of these eight countries and more than 135 times the best. Why? This book reveals successes and mistakes in science, governmental policies, and politics that vastly altered the incidence and severity of COVID-19 in different parts of the world. The author explains his research in a near conversational, human-focused approach understandable to nonscientists. The topics range from the nature of coronaviruses to the economic consequences of the pandemic. The movement toward a “new normal” of living with the virus is dangerous, he writes. Without recognition of governmental policy failures and implementation of new science-based policies, periodic surges in infections will continue and more lethal mutations cannot be ruled out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • BOOKER PRIZE NOMINEE • From the beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning author, a sparkling novel about misperception, second chances, and the sometimes elusive power of human connection. Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel, he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed life. But one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a "girlfriend") tells him she's facing eviction, and a teenager shows up at Micah's door claiming to be his son. These surprises, and the ways they throw Micah's meticulously organized life off-kilter, risk changing him forever. An intimate look into the heart and mind of a man who finds those around him just out of reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply compassionate story about seeing the world through new eyes, Redhead by the Side of the Road is a triumph, filled with Anne Tyler's signature wit and gimlet-eyed observation.
