Book Towards Sustainable Road Transport

Download or read book Towards Sustainable Road Transport written by Ronald M. Dell and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing pressure on global reserves of petroleum at a time of growing demand for personal transport in developing countries, together with concerns over atmospheric pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, are leading to a requirement for more sustainable forms of road transport. Major improvements in the efficiency of all types of road vehicles are called for, along with the use of fuels derived from alternative sources, or entirely new fuels. Towards Sustainable Road Transport first describes the evolution of vehicle designs and propulsion technologies over the past two centuries, before looking forward to possible new forms of energy to substitute for petroleum. The book also discusses the political and socio-economic drivers for change, investigates barriers to their broad implementation, and outlines the state-of-the-art of candidate power sources, advanced vehicle design, and associated infrastructure. The comprehensive technical informationsupplied by an expert author team ensures that Towards Sustainable Road Transport will provide readers with a clear understanding of the ongoing progress in this field and the challenges still to be faced. - Drivers of technological change in road transport and the infrastructure requirements - Discussion of alternative fuels for internal combustion engines and fuel conversion technologies - Detailed exploration of current and emerging options for vehicle propulsion, with emphasis on hybrid/battery electric traction, hydrogen, and fuel cells - Comparative analysis of vehicle design requirements, primary power source efficiency, and energy storagesystems

Successive chapters cover the history of biofuels; the first- and second-generation liquid fuels and biofuels for powering electric vehicles; fossil fuel replacement, land requirement, greenhouse gas balances and environmental burdens of ethanol, esters derived from fatty acids (‘biodiesel’), Fischer-Tropsch diesel and HTU diesel; competing technologies (fossil fuels, increases in energy-efficiency and photovoltaic power) and how they compare to biofuels; and the perspectives for biofuels. Cost, availability, technological development, competition with biomass for food and for soil organic carbon and environmental perspectives are also discussed.

Book Guidance Note Road Transport Subsector Risk Assessment

Download or read book Guidance Note Road Transport Subsector Risk Assessment written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The road transport subsector tends to be vulnerable to risks. This is due to large budgets that often comprise a sizable percentage of a country's national budget (20%-30%), an unclear strategic vision, nontransparent policy decisions that lead to inappropriate priorities, procurement contracts for goods and services that lend themselves to corruption, and political interference. Additional factors include weak business processes and control systems, weak capacity of subsector agencies, and fragile links across agencies and stakeholders. This guidance note aims to explain key features of the road transport subsector and identify entry points for mapping governance risks.

Book Eliminating Serious Injury and Death from Road Transport

Download or read book Eliminating Serious Injury and Death from Road Transport written by Ian Ronald Johnston and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explodes the myths that currently drive society's view of traffic safety and limit progress in reducing death and serious injury. It presents current scientific knowledge in a non-technical way and draws parallels with other areas of public safety and public health. It uses examples from the media and from public policy debates to paint a clear picture of a flawed public policy approach and offers preventive medicine principles to take the field forward.

Book Intelligent Road Transport Systems

Download or read book Intelligent Road Transport Systems written by Yunpeng WANG and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) has steadily expanded, and has become a hot spot of common interest to universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and institutions in the transportation field. ITS is the product of the deep integration of modern high-tech in the transportation industry, and its development has accompanied that of modern high-tech. ITS is now also becoming part of the Internet of Things (IoT), and is expected to contribute significantly to making our cities smarter and connecting with other infrastructure. Although there are many monographs and textbooks on intelligent transportation, with the advancement of technology and changes in demand, the key technologies of ITS are also rapidly changing. This book chiefly focuses on the main technologies of ITS, examining them from four perspectives: “sense” (perception and management of traffic information, chapters 2 & 3), “transmission” (interaction of traffic information, chapter 4), “prediction” (prediction of traffic states, chapter 6) and “application” (intelligent transportation applications, chapters 6 through 10). Given its scope, the book can be used as a textbook for undergraduates or graduates, as well as a reference book for research institutes and enterprises. This book emphasizes the use of basis traffic engineering principles and state-of-art methodologies to develop functional designs. It largely reflects the authors’ own experience in adapting these methodologies to ITS design. For example, the book addresses various forms of data collection, models used to predict and evaluate traffic states, comprehensive description in connected vehicles, applications for users and traffic managers, etc. The knowledge gained here will allow designers to estimate the performance differences among alternatives and gauge their potential benefits for functional design purposes. To gain the most from the book, readers should be somewhat familiar with the field of traffic engineering and interested in ITS.

Book The Rise and Rise of Road Transport 1700 1990

Download or read book The Rise and Rise of Road Transport 1700 1990 written by Theodore Cardwell Barker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-09-28 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books about Britain's transport history have concentrated upon canals and railways. It is now clear that a great deal of traffic went by road even before turnpikes, and that goods as well as passenger services were much more highly developed than used to be supposed. This book is an important survey of road transport over the past three centuries. The authors summarise the new evidence and arguments and explain why we need to take a longer view of the subject. They shed new light on the importance of horse-drawn freight in the eighteenth century before the introduction of turnpikes, offset the undue attention paid to the railways in the nineteenth century, and stress that motor transport's present great importance only dates from the 1950s. A full bibliography is provided for more extended study.

Book Road Transport in Cumbria in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Road Transport in Cumbria in the Nineteenth Century written by L.A. Williams and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road Transport in Cumbria in the Nineteenth Century (1975) is a detailed study of transportation by road in one region of Britain. By the middle decades of the nineteenth century, roads are being superseded by railways as the main form of land transportation, but until then roads had carried the main proportion of the nation’s passenger traffic as well as freight. Their importance in the early years of industrialisation and rapid urban and population growth are examined, as is way in which road transport interests reacted to the challenge posed by a faster, cheaper and more efficient form of transportation. In addition, as ‘through’ traffic on the roads decreased as the railways expanded, short distance traffic increased considerably.
