Book excerpt: Revised and expanded new edition of classic illustrated history Laid down and constructed for the German Hamburg Amerika Line, Majestic was ceded to Britain's White Star line to replace the Britannic, a sister ship of Titanic sunk during the war. At 56,000 tons she was the world's largest ship until the Normandie was built. With sumptuous interiors, luxurious restaurants and public rooms, she plied her trade until 1936 when she was destined to be sold for scrap. Rescued and converted into a training ship for naval cadets, she sailed for Rosyth as HMS Caledonia. Here she survived in a static role until 1940 when she was burned out. She spent most of her life on the Southampton-New York run but cruised to Canada and on short cruises from Southampton too. Mark Chirnside's previous two works on the Olympic-Class ships have become the definitive works on these white star vessels and have earned him two 'Books of the Month' from Ships Monthly.

Book Death of a Purser

Download or read book Death of a Purser written by Frank McElroy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the years I have tried to get the answers to the many, many questions that I have been asked regarding the RMS Titanic's Chief Purser Hugh Richard Walter McElroy, in doing this Autobiography and family research, the world can now know and hopefully understand Hugh, also I hope all those questions that have been asked over the years have now possibly been answered also if others wish to go further into speculation, like they have in the past, will find that there is no substitute for the truth, I hope that they will do their research rationally in locating the raw truth and with some regard to the simple fact that there are no villains in this story: just human beings with human characteristics. This book contains a large amount of unknown facts about the family and Hugh, regards his early life, His never before told regards his unknown life with the White Star Line; what happened to Barbara after Hugh died; Why did Hugh's sister Charlotte's name disappear so quickly from the Southampton Committee of the Titanic Relief Fund, in November 1914) after all she was a class "A" dependants. The loss of the R.M.S. Titanic created a debate that has raged ever since, and probably will do so for ever, It happened in 1912, prior to two world wars, long before television, indeed, long before the talking pictures. It was an era as different to today as one can imagine, It was a world quite unlike our present days in nearly every respect, yet this event has even the most modern child's attention when it is spoken of. It is a story and the effects of its happening endure, and will always endure, so long as humans remain human.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, Robert F. Cross’ Sailor in the White House remains one of the most interesting and intimate books about Franklin D. Roosevelt. Secret Service agents, family, and old sailing pals share stories about their days on the water with America’s greatest seafaring president. The author argues that the skills required to be a good sailor are the same skills that made FDR a successful politician: the ability to alter courses, make compromises, and shift positions as the situation warrants. This perspective on Roosevelt shows how his love of the sea shaped his presidency, and its unique look remains refreshing even today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disaster which befell RMS Titanic has become one of the most investigated and analyzed maritime tragedies of all time. Yet there is much still to be untangled from the web of mystery which still surrounds this confused, catastrophic event. The people on board were proud to be part of the ship’s highly-publicised first voyage, but as the first batch of officers reported for duty in Belfast to prepare her for her trial trip to Southampton and beyond, they could not have imagined the fate which awaited them. Titanic was, after all, ‘unsinkable’. It is exclusively through the eyes of seven unlucky men – the small group of officers onboard for that doomed voyage – that the author reveals the tragedy as it unfolded that night in April 1912. From their assignment to the White Star liner through to their eventual fates. Each one of these seven men behaved with great courage and discipline in a situation beyond anything they had previously experienced and some of the officers left accounts of the horrors they witnessed. Of this small group, four were members of the Royal Naval Reserve; this included Charles Lightoller, who was the Second Officer and in charge of loading passengers into lifeboats on the port side. He was noted for strictly enforcing the ‘women and children only’ principle, allowing only those men needed for manning the boats to join them. Four of the seven officers survived the ordeal. As the author reveals, one of them had only been formally appointed to the crew the day before Titanic sailed on its climatic maiden voyage. This was Henry Tingle Wilde, who was scheduled to sail with Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, but who was switched to Titanic as the Chief Officer. He reported for duty on the very day the ship departed Southampton. This move meant a reshuffle of the officers and, as only seven officers were deemed necessary, Second Officer David Blair was removed from the crew list and sent ashore. He was certainly the luckiest of all. The unfortunate Wilde went down to the bottom with his ship. Of the many questions asked about that night is that of the fate of Captain Edward Smith. His body was never recovered and it had naturally been assumed that he too had been lost. In Titanic’s Unlucky Seven, James Bancroft questions if this might not actually be the case. There is evidence that Smith may have survived the sinking, and was seen and spoken to months after the event by a man who had sailed with him, and who had known him personally for most of his life. Certainly, Smith had good reason to disappear into obscurity. For the first time, a clear picture of the incidents, actions and events leading up to and during the sinking of Titanic can be seen through the stories of the seven men in charge that night.

Download or read book Into the Maelstrom written by Colin Brittain and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 29 October 1914 the hospital ship Rohilla left Queensferry with 234 people on board bound for Dunkirk. Just after 4 a.m. on 30 October there was a tremendous impact as the ship ran onto rocks at Saltwick Nab, a mile south of Whitby. Mortally wounded only 600 yards from shore, she was 'so close to land yet so far from safety'. It was impossible to launch the Whitby No. 1 lifeboat to aid those stranded on the ship, instead the No. 2 boat, John Fielden, was lifted over the sea wall and hauled over the rock Scar to opposite the Rohilla. Despite being holed, the lifeboat reached the wreck after great difficulty and rescued five nurses and twelve men. A further eighteen men were saved in a second trip, but damage to the lifeboat barred any further rescues. This book unfolds the heroic events that transpired as members of the public and lifeboatmen struggled to reach those stranded on the wreck. The final fifty souls were saved in an impressive rescue from a motor lifeboat that had travelled over 40 miles in perilous conditions to reach them. Of the 234 people on board the Rohilla eighty-nine were lost. Such was the effort involved that the RNLI bestowed some of its highest medals on several of those involved in the rescue. The loss of the Rohilla is still regarded as one of the worst tragedies to have occurred amongst the annals of the RNLI.
