This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in computer technology, in the technology of communication and in mathematical modelling of processes in the hydrological cycle have recently improved our potential to protect ourselves against damage through floods and droughts and to control quantities and qualities in our water systems. This development was demonstrated in a 1983 post-experience course at Wageningen University where an international group of experts reviewed successful modelling techniques and described the design and operation of a number of forecasting and control systems in drainage basins and river reaches of various sizes and under various geographical and climat ological conditions. A special effort was made to bridge the gap between theory and practice; case studies showed that each forecasting system was designed to meet a set of specific requirements and they illustrated that the forecasting system can only be expected to operate reliably if, on the one hand, it is based on sound theoretical concepts and methods and if, on the other hand, it is robust so that, also under adverse conditions, it will continue to collect and process the necessary input data and produce correct and timely signals. We were pleased to meet with encouragement for preserving the course material and making it available to a wider public. This was effected by the team of authorf who elaborated, updated and harmonized the materia in two stages; first into an issue of our university department and finally into the manuscript of this book.

Book Evaluating the Use of Neural Networks to Predict River Flow Gauge Values

Download or read book Evaluating the Use of Neural Networks to Predict River Flow Gauge Values written by Wesley Michael Walford and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without improved water management the global population could be facing serious water shortages. River flow discharge rates are one factor that could contribute to improving water management, being able to predict a forecasted river flow value would provide support in the management of water resources. This research investigates the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) to create a model that predicts river flow gauge values. The Driel Barrage monitoring station on the Thukela river in South Africa was used as a case study. The research makes use of data from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) and weather forecast data from the European Center For Medium- Range Forecasts (ECMWF) to train the predictive model. An evaluation of the ANN model identified that the model is highly sensitive to selected weather parameters and is sensitive to the initial weights used in the ANN. These were overcome using an ANN ensemble and selective scenarios to identify the best weather parameters to use as input into the ANN model. Five weather parameters and a correlation coefficient cut-off value produced the most accurate prediction by the ANN. The research found that ANNs can be used for predicting river flow gauge values but to improve the results a greater ensemble, additional data and different ANN structures may create a better performing model. For the ANN model to be used in practice the research needs to be extended to evaluate the whole catchment area and a range of rivers in South Africa.

Book Time Series Modeling of River Flow Using Wavelet Neural Networks

Download or read book Time Series Modeling of River Flow Using Wavelet Neural Networks written by Dr. Amit Jain and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new hybrid model which combines wavelets and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) called wavelet neural network (WNN) model was proposed in the current study and applied for time series modeling of river flow. The time series of daily river flow of the Malaprabha River basin (Karnataka state, India) were analyzed by the WNN model. The observed time series are decomposed into sub-series using discrete wavelet transform and then appropriate sub-series is used as inputs to the neural network for forecasting hydrological variables. The hybrid model (WNN) was compared with the standard ANN and AR models. The WNN model was able to provide a good fit with the observed data, especially the peak values during the testing period. The benchmark results from WNN model applications showed that the hybrid model produced better results in estimating the hydrograph properties than the latter models (ANN and AR).
