Book excerpt: A three and a half year glimpse into the world of Rita Royale, an instinctive thirty-one year old unmarried, half Jewish, professional poker player. Free spirited mentally, physically and sexually. A woman entirely unconcerned with labels and purposely detached from any and all political worlds until a phone call from her sister changes everything. Within six months of taking power, Canada's majority left wing coalition government has voted overwhelmingly for Sharia law as the new law of the land. A backlash leading to a civil war erupts in Western Canada almost immediately and the Albertan woman who had ignored the world for so long is drawn straight into the heart of the whirlwind. From a private in the Western Militia to a major in Badger Troop, a special forces unit in the new Free Canadian Army, the beautiful Rita rises quickly in rank while guided by an eagle spirit and an unseen general with plans to retake and reshape his country. A serious and sometimes humorous look into the life and times of Rita Royale as she juggles love in its many variations, fights for women's freedom in a war of no surrender, and strives to fathom the mind of the military and the crazies alike.

Book excerpt: The melody of death... Down at the edge of Mexican town, where the pavement gives out and the yellow dust drifts ankle deep over the hard packed adobe, a radio is moaning a dreamy beat into the night. It is the kind of music that needs two people, but only one is listening—a long legged blonde who keeps time to the music while brushing her glistening hair... She drops the brush and reaches for the tall glass that stands on the dressing table—and then she hesitates, peering into the blackness of the room beyond. There is no doubt about the sound... “Frank?” She stands up and moves through the doorway, the name still on her lips. And then she dies...horribly.

Book Onomastics of the Chanson de Roland

Download or read book Onomastics of the Chanson de Roland written by Gustav A. Beckmann and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-03-06 with total page 1194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious study of all proper names in the Chanson de Roland is based for the first time on a systematic survey of the whole geographical and historical literature from antiquity to after 1100 for the Geographica, and on working through (almost) the entire documentary tradition of France and its neighbouring regions from 778 to the early 12th century for the personal names. The overall result is clear: the surviving song is more tightly and profoundly structured, even in smaller scenes, than generally assumed, it is also richer in depicting reality, and it has a very long prehistory, which can be traced in outline, albeit with decreasing certainty, (almost) back to the Frankish defeat of 778. Here are some individual results: for the first time, a detailed (and ultimately simple!) explanation not only of the 'pagan' catalogue of peoples, but also of the overarching structure of Baligant's empire, the organisation of North Africa, the corpus of the Twelve Anti-Pairs as well as the 'pagan' gods are given, and individual names such as Bramimunde and Jurfaret, toponyms such as Marbrise and Marbrose are explained. From Roland's Spanish conquests (v. 196-200), the course of the elapsed set anz toz pleins is reconstructed. Even the names of the weapons prove to be a small structured group, in that they are very discreetly adapted to their respective 'pagan' or Christian owner. On the Christian side, the small list of relics in Roland's sword is also carefully devised, not least in what is left out: a relic of the Lord; this is reserved for Charlemagne's Joiuse. The author explains for example, why from the archangel triad only Michael and Gabriel descend to the dying Roland, whereas 'the' angel Cherubin descends in Rafael's place. Munjoie requires extensive discussion, because here a (hitherto insufficiently recorded) toponym has been secondarily charged by the poet with traditional theological associations. The term Ter(e) major is attested for the first time in reality, namely in the late 11th century in Norman usage. For the core of France, the fourth cornerstone - along with Besançon, Wissant and Mont-Saint-Michel - is Xanten, and its centre is Aachen. The poet's artful equilibration of Charles's ten eschieles and their leaders is traced. The "Capetian barrier" emerges as a basic fact of epic geography. Approximatively, the last quarter of the study is devoted to the prehistory of the song, going backwards in time: still quite clearly visible is an Angevin Song of Roland from around 1050, in which Marsilĭe, Olivier, Roland, Ganelon, Turpin and Naimes already have roles similar to those in the preserved Song. Behind it, between about 970 and shortly after 1000, is the Girart de Vienne from the Middle Rhône, already recognised by Aebischer, with the newly invented Olivier contra Roland. Finally, in faint outlines, an oldest attainable, also Middle Rhône adaptation of the Roland material from shortly after 870 emerges. For the Chanson de Roland, Gaston Paris and Joseph Bédier were thus each right on the main point that was close to their hearts: the surviving song has both the thoroughly sophisticated structure of great art that Bédier recognised in it, and the imposingly long prehistory that Paris conjectured.

Book Mae West

  • Author : Jill Watts
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-04-17
  • ISBN : 9780195347678
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Mae West written by Jill Watts and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why don't you come up and see me sometime?" Mae West invited and promptly captured the imagination of generations. Even today, years after her death, the actress and author is still regarded as the pop archetype of sexual wantonness and ribald humor. But who was this saucy starlet, a woman who was controversial enough to be jailed, pursued by film censors and banned from the airwaves for the revolutionary content of her work, and yet would ascend to the status of film legend? Sifting through previously untapped sources, author Jill Watts unravels the enigmatic life of Mae West, tracing her early years spent in the Brooklyn subculture of boxers and underworld figures, and follows her journey through burlesque, vaudeville, Broadway and, finally, Hollywood, where she quickly became one of the big screen's most popular--and colorful--stars. Exploring West's penchant for contradiction and her carefully perpetuated paradoxes, Watts convincingly argues that Mae West borrowed heavily from African American culture, music, dance and humor, creating a subversive voice for herself by which she artfully challenged society and its assumptions regarding race, class and gender. Viewing West as a trickster, Watts demonstrates that by appropriating for her character the black tradition of double-speak and "signifying," West also may have hinted at her own African-American ancestry and the phenomenon of a black woman passing for white. This absolutely fascinating study is the first comprehensive, interpretive account of Mae West's life and work. It reveals a beloved icon as a radically subversive artist consciously creating her own complex image.
