Book Risk Allocation in Hybrid Pension Plans

Download or read book Risk Allocation in Hybrid Pension Plans written by XIAOBAI. ZHU and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different hybrid designs are considered in this thesis. Chapter 1 studies the risk management of Cash Balance (CB) pension plans, which are the most popular hybrid plans in the U.S. We show that the simple delta and gamma hedging is effective in mitigating the interest rate risk embedded in the CB liabilities. Chapter 2 introduces a new pension design based on two existing hybrid plans - the second election option and the Defined Benefit underpin plan. We demonstrate how our new plan is able to provide more income security to the retirees without incurring large costs on top of the other two existing hybrid plans. Chapter 3 explores the optimal design for intergenerational risk-sharing (IRS) plans. We demonstrate the necessity to incorporate regulatory constraints to ensure generational fairness. The last chapter concludes the thesis and proposes future work in hybrid pension designs.

Book Evaluating the Design of Private Pension Plans

Download or read book Evaluating the Design of Private Pension Plans written by Hans J. Blommestein and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal purpose of this paper is to analyse the trade-off between the uncertainty in contributions on the one hand and benefits on the other that is embedded in different pension arrangements. The paper employs the funding ratio (ratio of assets to liabilities) and the replacement rate (ratio of benefits to salaries) as key criteria for evaluating the risk sharing characteristics of a private pension plan from the perspective of the plan member. The stochastic simulations performed show that hybrid plans (those in between traditional DB and individual DC) appear to be more efficient and sustainable forms of risk sharing than either of the other two. Of the three main hybrid plans analysed, conditional indexation plans appear to have the greatest potential as sustainable forms of risk sharing.

Book Understanding Risks in a Hybrid Pension Plan with Stochastic Rates of Return

Download or read book Understanding Risks in a Hybrid Pension Plan with Stochastic Rates of Return written by Tingting Wen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solvency risk, contribution rate risk, and benet risk of a hybrid pension plan with stochastic investment returns are studied in this project. Gaussian, autoregressive and moving average processes are used to model the rate of return. The rst two moments of the funding level, the contribution rate and the benet payment are presented both at the stationary status and during evolution. Three investment strategies are considered and the risks generated in the hybrid pension plan are compared. Dierent sets of valuation rates of interest are used to understand the impact of regulative environmental change on the hybrid pension plan. The trade-o between the contribution and benet risks and the optimum region of risk sharing are discussed to provide an insight of the relationship between plan sponsors and employees under a hybrid pension plan.

Book Investment Risks and Returns of Hybrid Pension Plans

Download or read book Investment Risks and Returns of Hybrid Pension Plans written by Peter Albrecht and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes pension plan costs and investment strategies in the context of alternative hybrid pension plans which are optimal either from the perspective of the plan sponsor or the beneficiaries. The focus is in particular on how the introduction of minimum and maximum limits for pension benefits as well as minimum guarantees and caps on the return of the members' individual investment accounts affect investment decisions and plan costs. Within a comparative static analysis framework, it is shown that for low to medium risk portfolios, minimum benefit guarantees tend to be more expensive than minimum return guarantees while for the latter costs increase exponentially with investment risk. The study also finds that the portfolio choice of the sponsor and the beneficiaries shows substantial differences depending on the exact plan design and the beneficiaries' risk aversion. Combining minimum return guarantees and caps on investment returns emerged as a possible means to reduce such differences, to share investment risks and returns more equally between sponsor and beneficiaries, and to keep pension plan costs under control.

Book Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment

Download or read book Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment written by Jeffrey R. Brown and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Security Policy in a Changing Environment analyzes the changing economic and demographic environment in which social insurance programs that benefit elderly households will operate. It also explores how these ongoing trends will affect future beneficiaries, under both the current social security program and potential reform options. In this volume, an esteemed group of economists probes the challenge posed to Social Security by an aging population. The researchers examine trends in private sector retirement saving and health care costs, as well as the uncertain nature of future demographic, economic, and social trends—including marriage and divorce rates and female participation in the labor force. Recognizing the ambiguity of the environment in which the Social Security system must operate and evolve, this landmark book explores factors that policymakers must consider in designing policies that are resilient enough to survive in an economically and demographically uncertain society.

Book excerpt: Americans are rapidly losing their pensions -- replaced by savings plans disguised as retirement plans. Many sponsors view defined contribution (DC) plans as the best option for retaining some of the features of a pension plan without bearing all of the costs and risks of DB. This paper explores how hybrid plans offer a more flexible approach to retirement plans by bringing together the best features of both DB and DC.This paper explores how:• Hybrid plans offer a flexible third option -- taking advantage of the best features of DB and DC plans, including:• A shared-risk approach• Stable cost• Guaranteed lifetime benefits• Professional management• Hybrid plans -- and how they balance sponsor and beneficiary responsibilities -- differ materially and hence provide flexibility.• A hybrid plan can limit participant biases and may help increase contributions and reduce investment risk.• Hybrid plans use professional management that can look beyond short-term volatility to focus on maximizing return potential (e.g., greater exposure to equities and higher yielding bonds).• Hybrids pool individual participants' assets, helping counter longevity risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real-world look at the pension revolution underway The Future of Pension Management offers a progress report from the field, using actual case studies from around the world. In the mid-70s, Peter Drucker predicted that demographic dynamics would eventually turn pensions into a major societal issue; in 2007, author Keith Ambachsheer's book Pension Revolution laid out the ways in which Drucker's predictions had come to pass. This book provides a fresh look at the situation on the ground, and details the encouraging changes that have taken place in pension management concepts and practices. The challenges identified in 2007 are being addressed, and this report shows how design, management, and investment innovation have led to measurably better pension outcomes. Pensions have become an everyday news item, and people are rightly concerned about the security of their retirement in light of recent pension scandals and the global financial crisis. This book provides a note of encouragement, detailing the ways in which today's pensions are becoming more and more secure, and the new ideas and practices that are chipping away at the challenges. Learn how pension management practices are improving Examine the uptick in positive outcomes over recent years Discover why pension investing is turning toward the long-term Consider the challenges that remain and their possible solutions Drucker's vision of a needed pension revolution is unfolding in real time. Better pension designs, more effective pension governance, and more productive pension investing are mitigating many of the issues that threatened collapse. The Future of Pension Management provides a real-world update on the state of pensions today and a look forward to the changes we still need to make.

Book How the Financial Crisis Affects Pensions and Insurance and Why the Impacts Matter

Download or read book How the Financial Crisis Affects Pensions and Insurance and Why the Impacts Matter written by Gregorio Impavido and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-07 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use a calibrated multi-sector DSGE model to analyze the likely impact of oil windfalls on the Ghanaian economy, under alternative fiscal and monetary policy responses. We distinguish between the short-run impact, associated with demand-related pressures, and the medium run impact on competitiveness and growth. The impact on inflation and the real exchange rate could be moderate, especially if the fiscal authorities smooth oil-related spending or increase public spending's import content. However, a policy mix that results in both a fiscal expansion and the simultaneous accumulation of the foreign currency proceeds from oil as international reserves to offset the real appreciation would raise demand pressures and crowd-out the private sector. In the medium term, the negative impact on competitiveness resulting from "Dutch Disease" effects could be small, provided public spending increases the stock of productive public capital. These findings highlight the role of different policy responses, and their interaction, for the macroeconomic impact of oil proceeds.

Book United States Pension Benefit Plan Design Innovation

Download or read book United States Pension Benefit Plan Design Innovation written by David S. Blitzstein and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor unions played an historic role creating the occupational pension system in the private and public sectors in the post-World War II era. That system, which was dominated by defined benefit pension plans, is in decline. The transition to a new system is economically and socially painful, and has been accelerated by two financial crises in the past decade. This paper uses a case study of a private sector union to demonstrate how labor unions can influence the renegotiation of the pension contract for American workers. The case study describes how one union evaluated the pension crisis from a sustainability viewpoint, and responded pro-actively by developing a hybrid pension plan that attempted to align the interest of all the stakeholders through equitable risk sharing. The hybrid plan developed by this union eventually had a broader influence on the pension community at large and the public policy debate around the pension crisis.
