It’s perfect timing since Annie is looking for any distraction from her own breakup— well, is it a proper break up when the guy ghosts you after five months of dating? Derek is Kelsey’s way too cute next-door neighbor that lives for the slopes. This shouldn’t be a problem for Annie since she’s certain he’s not her type— and she’s not his. But when Derek embarks on a campaign to get her to finally face her fear of skiing, she begins to question that belief and learns that there might be more to this ski bum than his shaggy blonde hair and boyish grin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her parents splitting up, 16-year-old Sammie Davis may not want to feel a thing, but feelings happen. For starters, she’s plenty angry. Her dad’s leaving their upstate New York home and moving clear across the country. Her mother—well, she’s packing up and relocating to New York City with Sammie, who has no say about any of it. Overnight Sammie is forced to deal with change. And one change spawns another: Roles get reversed, old and new friendships tested, and sexual feelings awakened. It’s a scary time. But as Sammie realizes that things can’t stay the same forever, that even the people she loves and trusts the most can disappoint her, she begins to accept that change isn’t always bad. It’s how you cope, jumbled feelings and all, that counts. And as she copes, Sammie’s sense of self emerges proud and strong.

Book Friend Is a Four Letter Word

Download or read book Friend Is a Four Letter Word written by Marva Bush and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-02 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever employed the world's oldest dumping line, "Can't we still be friends?" just to take the sting off a breakup? Or worse, have you ever had it used on you? Be honest. It didn't make you feel any better, did it? If you answered no, then you'll agree that, sometimes, the word friend can be a heartbreaker. That is the subject of Friend is a Four-Letter Word. It is a contemporary romantic comedy centered on Kate, a woman on the brink of madness in her attempt to navigate her way through relationships in the twenty-first century. Picture a woman watching Fatal Attraction with a room full of happily married couples. Kate not only breaks into tears, but shamelessly asks the hostess for a tissue after witnessing the scene in which Glenn Close dies. (She was so misunderstood.) Friend is a Four-Letter Word takes an amusing look at the ever-blurring line between love, friendship and total insanity.

Book States and the Reemergence of Global Finance

Download or read book States and the Reemergence of Global Finance written by Eric Helleiner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most accounts explain the postwar globalization of financial markets as a product of unstoppable technological and market forces. Drawing on extensive historical research, Eric Helleiner provides the first comprehensive political history of the phenomenon, one that details and explains the central role played by states in permitting and encouraging financial globalization.Helleiner begins by highlighting the commitment of advanced industrial states to a restrictive international financial order at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference and during the early postwar years. He then explains the growing political support for the globalization of financial markets after the late 1950s by analyzing five sets of episodes: the creation of the Euromarket in the 1960s, the rejection in the early 1970s of proposals to reregulate global financial markets, four aborted initiatives in the late 1970s and early 1980s to implement effective controls on financial movements, the extensive liberalization of capital controls in the 1980s, and the containment of international financial crises at three critical junctures in the 1970s and 1980s.He shows that these developments resulted from various factors, including the unique hegemonic interests of the United States and Britain in finance, a competitive deregulation dynamic, ideological shifts, and the construction of a crisis-prevention regime among leading central bankers. In his conclusion Helleiner addresses the question of why states have increasingly embraced an open, liberal international financial order in an era of considerable trade protectionism.

Book Mastering Space

  • Author : John Agnew
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2002-09-26
  • ISBN : 1134869088
  • Pages : 325 pages

Download or read book Mastering Space written by John Agnew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over two hundred years the domination of some countries by others has been intrinsic to international relations, with national economic and political strength viewed as essential to a nation's survival and global position. Mastering Space identifies the essential features of this "state-centredness" and suggests an optimistic alternative more in keeping with the contemporary post-Cold War climate. Drawing on recent geopolitical thinking, the authors claim that the dynamism of the international political economy has been obscured through excessive attention on the state as an unchanging actor. Dealing with such topical issues as Japan's rise to economic dominance and America's perceived decline, as well as the global impact of continued geographical change, the book discusses the role of geographical organization in the global political economy, and the impact of increasing economic globalisation and political fragmentation in future international relations. The authors identify the present time as crucial to the global political economy, and explore the possibilities of moving the world from mastering space to real reciprocity between peoples and places. John Agnew is a Professor of Geography at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University. Stuart Corbridge is a lecturer in Geography at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College.

Book The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation

Download or read book The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation written by Mark Mobius and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if everything you’ve learned about inflation is wrong? The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation illustrates our rapidly changing world where constant technological innovation leads to cheaper and better products. These changes are no longer reflected in the ways we measure inflation. Renowned investor and author Mark Mobius persuasively argues that what we believe to know about inflation today does not reflect the reality any longer. It is a myth, a legend, a fable, and, yes, a falsehood for a number of reasons. The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation tackles a number of fascinating topics, including: The political nature of inflation measurement where governments manipulate and exploit inflation numbers to fit their economic programs The extreme difficulty involved in gathering accurate data to measure inflation and the resulting inaccuracy of those measures The error of using currencies to measure inflation when those currencies are continually being debased by the governments who issue them Finally, and most importantly, the advances in technology and automation which are leading to continuously falling costs for goods and services Perfect for anyone with even a passing interest in macroeconomic phenomena or government policies, which are significantly impacting people's everyday lives around the world, The Inflation Myth and the Wonderful World of Deflation provides a remarkably compelling and provocative view of stunning originality.

Book International Political Economy

Download or read book International Political Economy written by Benjamin J. Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 1970s, few serious efforts were made to bridge the gap between economics and political science in the study of international relations. Systematic scholarly analysis of International Political Economy (IPE), emphasizing formal integration of elements of orthodox market and political analysis, is really of very recent origin. This volume brings together some of the most important research papers published in the modern field of IPE since its birth less than four decades ago, emphasizing work that has significantly advanced theoretical and analytical understandings. Coverage includes grand questions of systemic transformation and system governance as well as more narrowly focused explorations of the two most central issue-areas of the world economy, trade and money and finance. The introductory essay locates this selection of articles in the context of the field's broad evolution and development to date.

Book A Piece of the Action

Download or read book A Piece of the Action written by Joe Nocera and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Helen Bernstein Award for Excellence in Journalism One of Business Week’s “Ten Best Business Books of the Year” When it was published in 1994, A Piece of the Action was wildly acclaimed by Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, authors Michael Lewis and Brian Burroughs; it won the Helen Bernstein Prize and was a national bestseller. Joseph Nocera describes the historical process by which millions of middle class Americans went from being savers—people who kept their money in the bank, and spent it frugally—to being unrepentant borrowers and investors. A Piece of the Action is an important piece of financial and social history, and with a new introduction, Nocera’s 2013 critique of the uses of the revolution is a powerful warning and admonition to understand what is at stake before we act, to look before we jump.
