Book La riqueza y la pobreza de las naciones

Download or read book La riqueza y la pobreza de las naciones written by David S. Landes and published by Editorial Crítica. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 1938 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Emergencies written by Rafael Doctor Roncero and published by Actar. This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: Emergencies collects work relating to Alfredo Jaar's Emergency, or to its call for attention to the developing world. From Tony Oursler's Boot to Anri Sala's Dammi i Colori, the works presented here were gathered together for the inaugural exhibition at the Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Castilla y Le*n, which opened in Le*n, Spain, in 2005. MUSAC's agenda, above and beyond collecting contemporary art, is the establishment of a dialogue with the public about everyday events that affect and threaten human sensibility. Emergencies documents that collecting, and is also a platform for the expression of the artists' and the museum's utopian hopes, as well as a stage for the fight between injustice and artists' dreams. To that end, each section of this dense, well-designed volume lists further reading on the artistic and political topics covered--government, nonprofit and reference addresses to turn to for more information in addition to web sites of interest.

Book Who Cooked Adam Smith s Dinner

Download or read book Who Cooked Adam Smith s Dinner written by Katrine Marcal and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you get your dinner? That is the basic question of economics. When economist and philosopher Adam Smith proclaimed that all our actions were motivated by self-interest, he used the example of the baker and the butcher as he laid the foundations for 'economic man,' arguing that the baker and butcher didn't give bread and meat out of the goodness of their hearts. It's an ironic point of view coming from a bachelor who lived with his mother for most of his life—a woman who cooked his dinner every night. The economic man has dominated our understanding of modern-day capitalism, with a focus on self-interest and the exclusion of all other motivations. Such a view point disregards the unpaid work of mothering, caring, cleaning and cooking. It insists that if women are paid less, then that's because their labor is worth less.A kind of femininst Freakonomics, Who Cooked Adam Smith’s Dinner? charts the myth of economic man—from its origins at Adam Smith's dinner table, its adaptation by the Chicago School, and its disastrous role in the 2008 Global Financial Crisis—in a witty and courageous dismantling of one of the biggest myths of our time.

In order to transform anomalies in politics such as corruption, laws and rules.

Download or read book Barrio Rising written by Prof. Alejandro Velasco and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the late 1950s political leaders in Venezuela built what they celebrated as Latin America’s most stable democracy. But outside the staid halls of power, in the gritty barrios of a rapidly urbanizing country, another politics was rising—unruly, contentious, and clamoring for inclusion. Based on years of archival and ethnographic research in Venezuela’s largest public housing community, Barrio Rising delivers the first in-depth history of urban popular politics before the Bolivarian Revolution, providing crucial context for understanding the democracy that emerged during the presidency of Hugo Chávez. In the mid-1950s, a military government bent on modernizing Venezuela razed dozens of slums in the heart of the capital Caracas, replacing them with massive buildings to house the city’s working poor. The project remained unfinished when the dictatorship fell on January 23, 1958, and in a matter of days city residents illegally occupied thousands of apartments, squatted on green spaces, and renamed the neighborhood to honor the emerging democracy: the 23 de Enero (January 23). During the next thirty years, through eviction efforts, guerrilla conflict, state violence, internal strife, and official neglect, inhabitants of el veintitrés learned to use their strategic location and symbolic tie to the promise of democracy in order to demand a better life. Granting legitimacy to the state through the vote but protesting its failings with violent street actions when necessary, they laid the foundation for an expansive understanding of democracy—both radical and electoral—whose features still resonate today. Blending rich narrative accounts with incisive analyses of urban space, politics, and everyday life, Barrio Rising offers a sweeping reinterpretation of modern Venezuelan history as seen not by its leaders but by residents of one of the country’s most distinctive popular neighborhoods.
