Book Rip Van Winkle Or The Works

Download or read book Rip Van Winkle Or The Works written by Dr Richard Nelson and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Nelson uses the familiar tale of Rip Van Winkle as the basis for his epic study of American agrarian reform, the Industrial Revolution, and the labor movement. ..".The play has a smart, engaging premise. Rip Van Winkle's sleep and waking are used to frame a variety of themes: men and women, parents and children, alcoholism, superstition, and, above all, the battle between industry and agriculture in the social history of the Hudson Valley. The style is also interesting: a kind of terse Bondian dialogue in short Brechtian scenes which allow the audience to find its own path between two ends of an imaginative leap..." Book The sources of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving and its influence on Max Frisch s novel Stiller

Download or read book The sources of Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving and its influence on Max Frisch s novel Stiller written by Reiner Ruft and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 1973 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Massachusetts - Amherst (English Department), course: English 750, Early American Literature, Professor Lowance, Fall Semester, 1973, language: English, abstract: Max Frisch novel "Stiller" was influenced by the American tale "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving. Irving himself was influenced by a German source. In this work, the author tries to untangle the interwoven works of Frisch and Irving. In the work the author singles out "Rip Van Winkle" by Washington Irving and expound it in a new with the assistance of a reverberation which this tale has had in the writings of the modern Swiss German author Max Frisch. The author is convinced that to draw certain conclusions from the influence a given work of literature exerts on later works of literature is as legitimate in literary interpretation as to infer anything from the use to which an author puts his source material. The author also believes that Frisch's modern exploitation of the "Rip Van Winkle" story may shed as much new light on Irving's achievement as the comparison between "Rip Van Winkle" and its German source in the tale of "Peter Klaus, the Goatherd" has done.

Book The Original Knickerbocker

Download or read book The Original Knickerbocker written by Andrew Burstein and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Washington Irving-author, ambassador, Manhattanite, and international celebrity-has largely slipped from America's memory, and yet, his creations are still very well known. With a historian's eye for scope and significance, Andrew Burstein returns Irving to the context of his native nineteenth century where he was a major celebrity-both a colorful comic genius and the first name in our national literature. Though he gave his young nation such enduring tales as “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle,” he was far more than one of our nation's most outsized literary talents. Irving was an American original and a citizen of the world.
