Book excerpt: MILITARY TECHNOLOGY was rapidly evolving in the 1770s and the American Revolution accelerated the creation of new arms and tactics. The one unit using all of Britain's new technologies most capably was the Queen's Loyal American Rangers. The Rangers did more with less and never lost a battle until their surrender at Yorktown. This book explores the variety of small arms the unit employed as well as the tactical philosophy ensuring their continued success. Rifles, Rangers & Revolution is a study of the fantastic arms of 1776 including the P1776 Ferguson Breechloading & the P1776 muzzleloading rifles, the Brown Bess musket, the Eliott Light Dragoon pistol, the Potter Saber and the little Grasshopper 3-pounder cannon. The shooting qualities of reproductions of the Ferguson and P1776 rifles are explored as well as the smoothbore Brown Bess musket and Eliott pistol. The making of the unique Ferguson ammunition as well as methods of using patched ball and the rolling of paper cartridges are detailed. In a strange twist, evidence is presented connecting Britain's newly revamped Woolwich Arsenal where the cannon were founded to the manufacture of the steam engine and the launch of the Industrial Revolution. Profusely illustrated with more than 140 photographs, including some rare prints depicting the Queen's Rangers from the 1780s, and the founding of cannon at Woolwich Arsenal! Published for the first time are pictures of the original Colours of the Queen's Rangers, which have been painstakingly restored, and hitherto unavailable for viewing by the public.

Book Firearms of the Texas Rangers

Download or read book Firearms of the Texas Rangers written by Doug Dukes and published by University of North Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their founding in the 1820s up to the modern age, the Texas Rangers have shown the ability to adapt and survive. Part of that survival depended on their use of firearms. The evolving technology of these weapons often determined the effectiveness of these early day Rangers. John Coffee “Jack” Hays and Samuel Walker would leave their mark on the Rangers by incorporating new technology which allowed them to alter tactics when confronting their adversaries. The Frontier Battalion was created at about the same time as the Colt Peacemaker and the Winchester 73—these were the guns that “won the West.” Firearms of the Texas Rangers, with more than 180 photographs, tells the history of the Texas Rangers primarily through the use of their firearms. Author Doug Dukes narrates famous episodes in Ranger history, including Jack Hays and the Paterson, the Walker Colt, the McCulloch Colt Revolver (smuggled through the Union blockade during the Civil War), and the Frontier Battalion and their use of the Colt Peacemaker and Winchester and Sharps carbines. Readers will delight in learning of Frank Hamer’s marksmanship with his Colt Single Action Army and his Remington, along with Captain J.W. McCormick and his two .45 Colt pistols, complete with photos. Whether it was a Ranger in 1844 with his Paterson on patrol for Indians north of San Antonio, or a Ranger in 2016 with his LaRue 7.62 rifle working the Rio Grande looking for smugglers and terrorists, the technology may have changed, but the gritty job of the Rangers has not.

Book US Army s First Last and Only All Black Rangers

Download or read book US Army s First Last and Only All Black Rangers written by Edward L. Posey and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist, Army Historical Foundation Distinguished Book Award: An account of this elite unit serving in the last days of a segregated military: “Riveting.” —The Journal of African American History The 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) was the first and only all-black Ranger unit in the history of the United States Army. The company’s life span covered ten months, from selection and training through a seven-month combat deployment in Korea, after which the unit was deactivated. The 2nd and 4th Rangers were among the units initially assigned to the Eighth Army and were considered to be “combat ready.” The 2nd Ranger Company battled North Korean and Communist Chinese forces near Tangyang, Majori-ri, and Chechon; conducted the first airborne assault in Ranger history near the town of Munsan-ni; and executed the heroic attack and defense of Hill 581. In their short time together, these men demonstrated courage, served with honor, and achieved a magnificent combat record. This is the first complete history of this elite all-volunteer unit whose members were drawn from the 3rd Battalion of the 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment and the 80th Airborne Anti-Aircraft Battalion. As a member of the unit, Edward L. Posey bases his account on firsthand experience, official records, interviews with survivors, and other material to produce a rich and worthy addition to the growing literature on the Korean War. Posey’s study explains the obstacles these patriotic men faced, their sacrifices, and their courageous actions on the far side of the world. “Outstanding . . . a shining example of what Americans are capable of accomplishing.” —John Conyers, Jr.

Book The Ferguson Rifle Could Have Changed the American Revolution

Download or read book The Ferguson Rifle Could Have Changed the American Revolution written by Tim Jarvis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From demonstrating his rifle in front of King George III in October, 1776, to his death at the Battle of Kings Mountain, author Tim L. Jarvis tells the story of Patrick Ferguson and his patented breech loading rifle known as the Ferguson Rifle. The author provides facts, based off of original primary source documentation, as well as his own personal experiences with his own reproduction Ferguson Rifle. The different theories surrounding the eventual disbandment of the rifle, the rifle's dominant impact at the Battle of Brandywine Creek, and the potentially fateful encounter Ferguson had with, who he believed to be, General Washington are all included within the chapters of this book. The Ferguson Rifle is an important, but often untold story that is part of the war that made America. The author explains why, he believes, the Ferguson Rifle could have had a much larger impact and how it could have changed the American Revolution.

It reveals the training and organizational changes that the unit has undergone and investigates in particular how their doctrine and tactics have changed during the 14-year war in Afghanistan. Rogers's command of the unit was short-lived, however, after a humiliating defeat in late October by a surprise attack on his headquarters. Under new leadership, the unit played a decisive role and suffered heavy casualties at the battle of Brandywine that brought them their first favorable attention from the British high command.
