Book Lost in the Long White Cloud

Download or read book Lost in the Long White Cloud written by David H. Rosen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost in the Long White Cloud is both creation story and vision quest of a healer. Prolific author, David H. Rosen, was the child of creative parents. Free to explore, the sometimes unattended toddler turned into a smart "good boy" with a "bad boy's" energy for funny, sad and scary escapades. The future author of The Tao of Elvis so successfully impersonated Elvis in junior high, that his gyrations led to "girls, girls, girls" -- and even a marriage proposal from one enamored adolescent's parents! Rosen's story takes us all over the map. In Greece, David lays awake under the stars with lovely Lolly and decides to become a fisherman. He pays a Parisian prostitute just to listen to her story, which will empower the future Jungian psychiatrist to help a call girl transform herself into a therapist for sexually-abused children. In Denmark, Rosen discovers that the well-provided-for citizens were strangely prone to suicide. Later, Dr Rosen would coin the term "egocide" and publish the magnum opus, Transforming Depression. US propaganda drives David to experience Russia for himself. The ensuing trip is an international "Twist and Shout" dance party in the train aisles! Lost in the Long White Cloud is a memoir turned cinematic adventure story by the astonishingly honest, good-hearted and erudite David H. Rosen, MD.

Book excerpt: Because of its remoteness, New Zealand was one of the last places to be settled by humans who arrived only 7-800 years ago from Polynesia and founded what today is a strong and highly influential Maori culture. We went to study recovery after the 2012 earthquake and stayed with Scharlie's cousin John and his wife Mollie in Christchurch. We interviewed key people involved in planning the reconstruction and also surveyed the damage in the centre and the badly affected suburbs, After we went off trekking, first on the Bealey Spur near Arthur's Pass north west of Christchurch and then along the Abel Tasman trail on the north coast of South Island. It was stunningly beautiful and we had it almost to ourselves. Finally, we crossed the Cook Strait to Wellington to meet people in GNS Science and visit a small piece of original bush preserved in the heart of the city.

The story follows an ancient feud between two frontier families that is inflamed when one of the families takes up cattle rustling._x000D_ "Seventeen years ago miners working a claim of Belllounds's in the mountains above Middle Park had found a child asleep in the columbines along the trail. Near that point Indians, probably Arapahoes coming across the mountains to attack the Utes, had captured or killed the occupants of a prairie-schooner. There was no other clue. Book Allegorizings

Download or read book Allegorizings written by Jan Morris and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Book Review • Editors' Choice Jan Morris delivers her final volume, brimming with reminiscences, meditations on daily life, and mini-essays on everything from maturity to whistling to Princess Diana. Not so long ago, feeling intimations of mortality, Jan Morris embarked on a wholly novel literary enterprise. What began as a series of high-minded letters to her late daughter—in the style of Lord Chesterfield addressing his son—quickly transformed itself into a potpourri of mini-essays and vibrant reminiscences, organized around experiences both majestic and mundane, from traveling the world with her lifelong partner, Elizabeth, to sneezing and kissing and simply growing old. So Allegorizings came to be, and so Morris decided that it should only be published upon her death, not because she had anything to hide but, merely, in parting. Featuring essays largely written in the early twenty-first century, Allegorizings reflects, above all, Morris’s steadfast conviction that nothing is only what it seems. In fact, she observes, everything is allegory. Indeed, in Morris’s telling, even life—the whole conundrum of existence—is one long, majestically impenetrable allegory. Taking us from the separatist hippie colony of Bolinas, California, to her home country of Wales, and introducing us to Nepalese Sherpas and elderly cruise-goers alike, Morris follows the throughline of allegory throughout her works. In one essay, she lambasts the joylessness of maturity (“Maturity! Did ever a heart thrill to the sound of it, still less the meaning?”) and in another, decries the nonsense of nationality. With characteristic verve, she offers odes to whistling and cursing, cats, and exclamation points. Morris’s travels anchor the collection, as she revisits the iconic settings of her previous works. We join her aboard the storied Orient Express, as well as tube trains passing through the purlieus of London. So too, we hike the foothills of the Himalayas—where Morris burst onto scene with her on-the-spot reportage of the first ascent of Everest—and reflect on the picaresque allure of Tournus, a dichotomized town in France where one France, bearing all the vestiges of privilege, seems to kiss another. Intimate and luminously wise, Allegorizings is as much a testament to the virtues of embracing life as it is a testament to its charming, indignant, and ever-surprising author. In her final work, Morris’s writing is as erudite as ever, conveying a generosity of spirit “flavored by well-earned crankiness” (Vox). Though newly bereft of her company, readers will be reminded what “a good, wise, and witty companion” (Alexander McCall Smith) Morris has been to so many, for so long.

The beloved author of The Life and Loves of a She Devil sends up marriage, 1950s London, fad diets, celebrity feminists, and Doctor Faustus, proving once again that she is “the social and sexual soothsayer of our literary times” (Company). The Fat Woman’s Joke: A novel about sex, food, marriage, and the indignities of the 1960s. After a lifetime of gorging herself, Esther Wells has an epiphany: She and her husband are going on a diet. Dedicated foodies throughout their marriage, they are about to discover what happens when new passions supplant old. “[Weldon is] an insightful and persuasive social commentator with an exhilarating mind.” —Susan Isaacs, author of Compromising Positions Down Among the Women: In 1950s London, Scarlet was raised by her mother—a former radical who left her husband to be fiercely independent. But at twenty, Scarlet has already had one abortion, and is about to become a single mother to the child she’s naming Byzantia. Over the course of twenty years, Scarlet and her friends will discover it’s never too late to become the women they are meant to be. “[A] stinging, brilliant comic novel.” —The Christian Science Monitor Growing Rich: Carmen is sixteen when Bernard Bellamy spies her from the back seat of his big, black BMW. He’s just made a bargain with Mephistopheles: his mortal soul in exchange for the fulfillment of his desires. As time passes, inexplicable things happen to Carmen and her friends. But she’s determined to hang on to her soul, no matter what obstacles—or temptations—are erected in her path. Will she succumb? Only the devil knows . . . “Glorious entertainment.” —Women’s Journal Darcy’s Utopia: With her husband in prison for financial crimes, Eleanor Darcy is a media sensation. A self-professed “feminist of the socialist variety,” she grants an interview to a pair of journalists. During the course of their conversations, two journalists find themselves on a life-changing journey as Eleanor spins her vision of a future where money is abolished and “all men will believe in God and be capable of love.” “A dazzling tour de force from one of Britain’s most inspiring and intelligent novelists.” —Cosmopolitan

They dealt it as it should be done, swiftly and surely. They had little time or patience with those who would take and waste lives of those who would strive for life in the harshest of environments.
