Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Improving Efficiency of Urea Fertilizers by Inhibition of Soil Urease Activity

Download or read book Improving Efficiency of Urea Fertilizers by Inhibition of Soil Urease Activity written by S. Kiss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive and updated review of fundamental studies on inhibition of soil urease activity and of applied studies on improving efficiency of urea fertilizers by inhibition of soil urease activity. The general literature on these topics covers 65 years and the patent literature comprises a period of nearly 40 years. The potential of food production to meet the growing needs related to population increase is largely conditioned by the efficiency of agricultural fertilizers. Urea has gradually become the most important nitrogen fertilizer in world agriculture. However, its efficiency is in general reduced due to excessive activity of a soil enzyme, urease. One way to increase efficiency of urea fertilizers is the inhibition of soil urease activity. In the last four decades, multilateral investigations have been carried out in a series of countries to identify and test unpolluting and inexpensive chemical compounds to be used as inhibitors of soil urease activity. These investigations are reviewed, including those described in the patent literature. The book is addressed to a broad audience, including experts and students in agronomy, forestry, plant physiology, soil science (especially soil biology and biochemistry), and other environmental sciences, as well as in organic and inorganic chemistry.

Book Nitrogen Content of Wheat and Corn in Response to the Application of Urea and the Urease Inhibitor N n butyl Thiophosphoric Triamide

Download or read book Nitrogen Content of Wheat and Corn in Response to the Application of Urea and the Urease Inhibitor N n butyl Thiophosphoric Triamide written by Chalone S. Hefley and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing nitrogen (N) uptake by crops is a primary goal of many crop producers due to the direct relationship between crop N content and higher yields. In order to increase N uptake by crops, the application of N fertilizer, specifically urea, is often used. However, N in the soil can be extremely volatile and is easily lost to the atmosphere through ammonia (NH3) volatilization before it is able to be used by the intended crops. Urease, an enzyme found in the soil, is a major facilitator of the NH3 volatilization process. Urease inhibitors were developed in order to delay the volatilization of N from N fertilizers, allowing more of the N to infiltrate the topsoil, thereby giving crops the opportunity to absorb the plant available N. This study was performed in an attempt to evaluate the effects of the urease inhibitor N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) on the harvested N content of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and corn (Zea mays L.) in the field. Six treatments, replicated four times each, were observed in completely randomized field plots each measuring 3.048 X 6.096 meters. The plots were treated with compost alone, compost treated with the NBPT-based inhibitor, N-YieldTM, urea alone, urea treated with N-YieldTM, urea treated with another NBPT-based inhibitor, Agrotain® (Ultra or Advanced, depending on the year), or were designated as a control group, wherein no fertilizer or urease inhibitor was applied. Once the crops reached maturity, they were harvested, and lab analyses were run on the dry matter harvested from each plot to determine nutrient values. In this study, N concentrations in wheat straw ranged from 0.64% in the control to 1.36% in the treatment containing urea treated with the NBPT-based inhibitor N-YieldTM, while N concentrations in wheat grain ranged from 2.09% in the control to 3.52% in the treatment containing urea treated with the NBPT-based inhibitor N-YieldTM. Similarly, N concentrations in the corn stover ranged from 0.81% in the compost treatment to 1.80% in the treatment containing urea treated with the NBPT-based inhibitor Agrotain®. However, the data analyzed in this study suggest that, in field conditions, while the application of urea fertilizer greatly increases N concentrations in wheat and corn, the addition of NBPT (whether Agrotain® or N-YieldTM) to urea before field application does not significantly increase N concentrations over that of urea alone.

Book Wheat Rice and Corn Response to the Urease Inhibitor N n butyl Thiophosphoric Triamide in a Dimethyl Sulfoxide propylene Glycol Solution

Download or read book Wheat Rice and Corn Response to the Urease Inhibitor N n butyl Thiophosphoric Triamide in a Dimethyl Sulfoxide propylene Glycol Solution written by Matthew William McClallen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface applied granular urea is a nitrogen fertilizer commonly used throughout the world. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the urea can be lost to the atmosphere through ammonia volatilization. Much research has been conducted in an attempt to reduce or stop this process and increase the efficiency of urea fertilizer. Urease inhibitors have been shown to be one possible method to reduce nitrogen volatilization. The chemical compound N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) has been shown to be an effective urease inhibitor. The purpose of this research was to test the effect that a new commercial NBPT containing product, N-Yield(TM), had on the growth of the common field crops including wheat, rice, and corn. Additionally, N-Yield was compared to the existing product, Agrotain Ultra©. Three studies were performed; a greenhouse study in Verde variety spring wheat, a greenhouse study of CL 111 variety rice, and a field study of dent corn. In the wheat study, three treatments, consisting of urea, urea with Agrotain (4.17 mL/kg), and urea with N-Yield (4.17 mL/kg) applied at 56, 84 and 112 kg nitrogen/ha, were compared to a no fertilizer treatment. The study was a CRD design, with three replications of each treatment. Above and below ground biomass were measured, and protein was analyzed using a Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIR). Significant differences were found in the mean above ground biomass for the Olton Clay Loam soil type (p=0.05). A significant difference between treatment means in protein content was found for both the Olton Clay Loam (p=0.08) and Amarillo Fine Sandy Loam soil types (p=0.001). In the rice study, three treatments consisting of urea, urea with Agrotain Ultra (4.17 mL/kg), and Urea with N-Yield(TM) (4.17 mL/kg) applied in either one or two applications of 22.41 kg nitrogen/ha, were compared to a no fertilizer treatment. The study was a CRD design, with four replications of each treatment. Above ground biomass and grain weight per plant was measured. Significant differences were observed between the treatment means of the grain weight (p=0.06) and for above ground biomass (p=0.09).The field corn study was set up in a RCBD design, using the prevailing south wind as a blocking factor. Three treatments and a no fertilizer control were used. Treatments consisted of urea, urea with Agrotain Ultra© (4.17 mL/kg), and urea with N-Yield(TM) (4.17 mg/kg) applied at a rate of 112 kg of nitrogen per hectare. There were three replications of each treatment for a total of 12 plots. Twenty plants were harvested from the middle of each plot and grain weight per ear was collected. Significant differences were found for the means of the grain weight per plant (p=0.008).

Book Resources Use Efficiency in Agriculture

Download or read book Resources Use Efficiency in Agriculture written by Sandeep Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achieving zero hunger and food security is a top priority in the United Nations Development Goals (UNDGs). In an era characterized by high population growth and increasing pressure on agricultural systems, efficiency in the use of natural resources has become central to sustainable agricultural practices. Fundamentally speaking, eco-efficiency is about maximizing agricultural outputs, in terms of quantity and quality, using less land, water, nutrients, energy, labor, or capital. The concept of eco-efficiency involves both the ecological and economic aspects of sustainable agriculture. It is therefore essential to understand the interaction of ecosystem constituents within the extensive agricultural landscape, as well as farmers’ economic needs. This book examines the latest eco-efficient practices used in agro-systems. Drawing upon research and examples from around the world, it offers an up-to-date overview, together with insights into directly applicable approaches for poly-cropping systems and landscape-scale management to improve the stability of agricultural production systems, helping achieve food security. The book will be of interest to educators, researchers, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers alike. It can also be used as additional reading material for undergraduate and graduate courses on agriculture, forestry, soil science, and the environmental sciences.
