Book Parasitic Wealth or Money Reform

Download or read book Parasitic Wealth or Money Reform written by John Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parasitic Wealth or Money Reform: A Manifesto to the People of the United States and to the Workers of the Whole World As these pages go to press, there comes a message of unspeakable sadness bearing news of Henry George's death. A great and good man has passed away; a staunch and intrepid champion of the wronged and oppressed has laid down his life in their service. The world is better and purer for the life of such a man, for as long as there are leaders in our midst so fearless, so incorruptible, so outspoken, there is hope for moral regeneration, hope for self-government, hope for industrial emancipation. This man stood up for the righting of deep-seated wrongs and has labored nobly in the cause of social justice. Other shoulders must take up the burden where awearied he has left it. It is right and fitting that this preface be the eulogy of one whose works and deeds largely inspired the writing of this book, and that it be a tribute of respect and affection, more deeply felt than duly expressed, to the memory of one who devoted his life to the betterment of mankind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " In 1978, China launched economic reforms that have resulted in one of history’s most dramatic national transformations. The reforms removed bureaucratic obstacles to economic growth and tapped China’s immense reserves of labor and entrepreneurial talent to unleash unparalleled economic growth in the country. In the four decades since, China has become the world’s second-largest economy after the United States, and a leading force in international trade and investment. As the contributors to this volume show, China also faces daunting challenges in sustaining growth, continuing its economic ransformation, addressing the adverse consequences of economic success, and dealing with mounting suspicion from the United States and other trade and investment partners. China also confronts risks stemming from the project to expand its influence across the globe through infrastructure investments and other projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. At the same time, China’s current leader, Xi Jinping, appears determined to make his own lasting mark on the country and on China’s use of its economic clout to shape the world around it. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead." -John Maynard Keynes, A Tract on Monetary Reform (1923) A Tract on Monetary Reform (1923), by British economist John Maynard Keynes, is a masterly analysis of the world monetary situation at the beginning of the twentieth century. Keynes stated the importance of stable domestic prices and a stable currency for a strong economy, while arguing against the gold standard, which at that time was used for the US dollar and many other currencies. Britain abandoned the gold standard in 1931-after it had re-established it in 1925-and the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1933. A Tract on Monetary Reform is essential reading for anyone interested in Keynes' theories and for students of economics or economic history.

Their substantial and general truth, however, is not thereby affected. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Limits of Institutional Reform in Development

Download or read book The Limits of Institutional Reform in Development written by Matt Andrews and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing countries commonly adopt reforms to improve their governments yet they usually fail to produce more functional and effective governments. Andrews argues that reforms often fail to make governments better because they are introduced as signals to gain short-term support. These signals introduce unrealistic best practices that do not fit developing country contexts and are not considered relevant by implementing agents. The result is a set of new forms that do not function. However, there are realistic solutions emerging from institutional reforms in some developing countries. Lessons from these experiences suggest that reform limits, although challenging to adopt, can be overcome by focusing change on problem solving through an incremental process that involves multiple agents.

Book Explaining Wealth Inequality

Download or read book Explaining Wealth Inequality written by Benedict Atkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the origins of wealth inequality and explains how societies can reform to avoid the catastrophe of inequality-induced social breakdown. It develops a theoretical and practical understanding of the principles behind the concept of ownership and property, complete with historical examples. It proposes a new research perspective focusing on how the problem of wealth concentration is ameliorated by cooperative and collaborative initiatives to enhance the public sphere, without derogating from the private. The book is based on research data compiled from taxation and household data to explore the theme that wealth inequality is made inevitable by possessive behaviour expressed in possessive language. It shows that while inequality is inescapable, we can adopt policies where resources are more efficiently and broadly distributed for public benefit. Such policies are directed towards encouraging voluntary, as opposed to compulsory, wealth transfer to achieve public good. The primary market for the book consists of academics and students from the fields of economics, including growth and developmental economics, law, sociology, history, business and international trade. It also provides a practical resource for government policy analysts wanting to develop a more detailed understanding of the role played by wealth inequality in a range of social problems.
