Book The Uprooting of European Identity

Download or read book The Uprooting of European Identity written by Richard B. Spencer and published by Radix. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of European peoples worldwide can be said to be distinctly post-Apartheid, post-colonial, and post-national. The White man lives in a world his race once dominated and in which Black and Brown are now colonizers, in which European heritage is being taken away piece by piece: cultural heroes, literature, popular icons, identity ultimately, everything. *The Great Erasure*, the first volume of *Radix Journal*, explores these themes, with particular emphasis on contemporary South Africa. Contributors include Richard Spencer (Editor), K.R. Bolton, Edmund Connelly, Paul Deussen, Samuel Francis, Alex Kurtagic, Colin Liddell, Kevin MacDonald, Andy Nowicki, Derek Turner, & Elizabeth Wright.

Book Richard Spencer

Download or read book Richard Spencer written by G. S. J. Chessell and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Captain Sir Richard Spencer RN was a nineteenth century man of action. He was adventurous, resourceful, devoted to those in his care - and had, as Gwen Chessell put it, 'a quarterdeck manner'." "He is remembered today as the early Government Resident of the fledgling settlement in Albany on the south coast of Western Australia. Albany was a shanty town when the ship bearing Richard and Ann Spencer and their nine children, soon to be ten, anchored in Princess Royal Harbour in 1833. Their carefully selected goods - from window frames, glass and roof slates to assorted fruit trees - were carried precariously ashore. The family all but doubled the town's population." "Richard Spencer worked diligently to administer the turbulent pioneer settlement, living peacefully with the local Aboriginal people and helping guarantee Albany's future as a settlement and port. He established Strawberry Hill Farm and built a comfortable home there for his family." "All this he achieved in middle age. The story of his early life in the Royal Navy of Admiral Lord Nelson's day is told here for the first time. Zealous, intrepid to the point of foolhardiness, and a hero to his men, Captain Spencer was a rising star during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When hate groups descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, triggering an eruption of racist violence, the tragic conflict reverberated throughout the world. It also had a profound effect on the University of Virginia’s expansive community, many of whose members are involved in teaching issues of racism, public art, free speech, and social ethics. In the wake of this momentous incident, scholars, educators, and researchers have come together in this important new volume to thoughtfully reflect on the historic events of August 11 and 12, 2017. How should we respond to the moral and ethical challenges of our times? What are our individual and collective responsibilities in advancing the principles of democracy and justice? Charlottesville 2017: The Legacy of Race and Inequity brings together the work of these UVA faculty members catalyzed by last summer’s events to examine their community’s history more deeply and more broadly. Their essays—ranging from John Mason on the local legacy of the Lost Cause to Leslie Kendrick on free speech to Rachel Wahl on the paradoxes of activism—examine truth telling, engaged listening, and ethical responses, and aim to inspire individual reflection, as well as to provoke considered and responsible dialogue. This prescient new collection is a conversation that understands and owns America’s past and—crucially—shows that our past is very much part of our present. Contributors: Asher D. Book The Great Erasure

Download or read book The Great Erasure written by Paul E Gottfried and published by Radix. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those who are a part of it, and for those who feel represented by it, the postwar American "conservative movement" has been a roaring success. More Americans openly identify themselves with "conservative" than any other political ideology. There are more magazines, websites, television programs, and publishing houses that advocate "conservatism" than ever before. But the question remains: What is this movement, which has, for some half century, defined what is called "the Right"? A central crucible in its formation has been "the purge"-that is, the expulsion, often in an explicit fashion, of views or individuals deemed outside the boundaries of the official Right. Through the purges-specifically, through the logic of the purges-we can glimpse what conservatism is *not*, those aspects of itself it has attempted to deny, mask, leave behind, and forget, and the ways in which memories can be reconstructed around new orthodoxies. This collection of essays attempts to understand how conservative ideology (often euphemized as "timeless principles") functioned within its historic context and how it responded to power, shifting conceptions of authority, and societal changes. It includes essays by Lee Congdon, John Derbyshire, Samuel T. Francis, Paul E. Gottfried, James Kalb, Keith Preston, William Regnery, and Richard Spencer.

Book Democracy Reformed

Download or read book Democracy Reformed written by Bernard Hirschhorn and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-07-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography, the first of Richard Spencer Childs, begins in the Progressive Era when Childs initiated and pursued two fertile ideas: the short ballot doctrine and the council-manager plan. Childs understood that the simplification of the task of the voter was a question pressing for solution and that the council-manager plan would transform municipal government. This comprehensive work discusses other aspects of Childs' broad reform agenda. His proposals included: county government reform; reform in state government administration; unicameral state legislatures; reapportionment of state legislatures; selection of judges by appointment; replacement of elective county coroners with appointed professional medical examiners; democratization of state political parties; and reform of the Presidential nominating system. Based on Childs' papers and personal interviews with Childs, this biography advances scholarship on the Progressive Era and contributes to the historiographical debate on the nature of reform.

Download or read book Richard Wagner written by Martin Geck and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-09-18 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[An] intriguing exploration of the composer’s life and thought as exemplified by his music. An excellent biography.” —Library Journal Best known for the four-opera cycle The Ring of the Nibelung, Richard Wagner (1813–83) was a conductor, librettist, theater director, and essayist, in addition to being the composer of some of the most enduring operatic works in history. Though his influence on the development of European music is indisputable, Wagner was also quite outspoken on the politics and culture of his time. His ideas traveled beyond musical circles into philosophy, literature, theater staging, and the visual arts. To befit such a dynamic figure, acclaimed biographer Martin Geck offers here a Wagner biography unlike any other, one that strikes a unique balance between the technical musical aspects of Wagner’s compositions and his overarching understanding of aesthetics. A landmark study of one of music’s most important figures “People who would like to know more about Wagner, and people who have loved his music for years . . . will find a great deal in this book to enjoy and to admire.” —Tablet “Geck describes a Wagner who is grounded, focused and even cautious, a savvy realist and ironist rather than a flamboyant, flailing ideologue . . . Suffused with his readings of contemporary productions of the operas, Geck’s musical analyses are succinct and superb” —New York Times “As an editor of Wagner’s Complete Works, Geck brings a deep familiarity with the composer to his task.” —Weekly Standard “A thoroughly approachable yet consistently provocative study.” —Thomas S. Grey, editor of The Cambridge Companion to Wagner

Book Harry Potter and the Classical World

Download or read book Harry Potter and the Classical World written by Richard A. Spencer and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J.K. Rowling has drawn deeply from classical sources to inform and color her Harry Potter novels, with allusions ranging from the obvious to the obscure. "Fluffy," the vicious three-headed dog in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, is clearly a repackaging of Cerberus, the hellhound of Greek and Roman mythology. But the significance of Rowling's quotation from Aeschylus at the front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a matter of speculation. Her use of classical material is often presented with irony and humor. This extensive analysis of the Harry Potter series examines Rowling's wide range of allusion to classical characters and themes and her varied use of classical languages. Chapters discuss Harry and Narcissus, Dumbledore's many classical predecessors, Lord Voldemort's likeness to mythical figures, and magic in Harry Potter and classical antiquity--among many topics.

Book Investigating the Alt Right Richard Spencer in America

Download or read book Investigating the Alt Right Richard Spencer in America written by Marcus Verhaegh and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW 2018 EDITION INCLUDES THE COMPLETE 2017 TEXT PLUS AUTHOR FORWARD AND AFTERWORD. ~A book summary is included, along with consideration of recent developments in the 'alt right' world. The Afterword addresses the logic of media attempts to reject 'alt right' politics by dismissing the reality of demographic change. Further the escalating apocalyptic elements of the world-scene are shown to more firmly doom, the viability of Richard Spencer's political leadership. Moreover, an expanded account is given of the illogic of the alt right's anti-Semitism and of its attempts to scapegoat Jewish individuals for civilizational and global catastrophes. The work will appeal to readers interested in philosophy, epistemology, politics, political science, and/or other social sciences. The work is focused on Spencer's 'alt right' but many of the arguments are relevant for wider critiques of white nationalism and white nationalist movements. //What is the 'alt right' or 'alternative right'? Today there is much discussion of a new 'alt right' philosophy, but how new is this movement? And is it very philosophical? It develops that various figures in white nationalist movements are key to the concept of the 'alt right,' including Richard Spencer, Kevin MacDonald, and Jared Taylor. However, investigation soon makes clear that Spencer stands above all others as central to the movement. But who is this individual, and also then what is the role in the movement of his wife, a Russian Heidegger scholar? Above all else - why has Spencer jumped to the fore of media attention, such that he is now linked with the White House Chief strategist, Steve Bannon? The world of the alt right is a shadowy one, but soon it emerges, something even darker is happening in the newsrooms paid to report upon it, where it is no longer clear whether they have contact with reality or only Nazi illusion. One tries to investigate the alt right but in discussing the alt right, the press makes the main story - itself and its prejudices. The alt right's interest in the philosophy of Husserl and Heidegger provides a Leitfaden for unfolding this disturbing situation, taking us to the inescapable question: do reporter and reader share the same world? Reporters offer their supposed experiences of the alt right, but a phenomenological analysis of this reveals, the phenomena have an uncertain relation to objectivity. Excerpt: "There were forces at the University which stymied border control activity, but this focus is confusing the forest for the trees. A wider resistance outside the University was always possible during the Reagan era, during the Bush era, etc. The level of corruption used to control such resistance, must extend beyond the media sphere to governmental levels. White elder capital has simply planned to crucify its son. There is again an unknown x here, an agent of governmental corruption. The forces which we posit as destroying American government, seem not of this world. Yet inevitably, we must expand our ontologies to explain why white decline occurs, and how it is to be addressed. Science is always a matter of expansion, and this must occur also in theorising U.S. politics. Then we will see, the 'alt right,' while entertaining in some respects, can only mislead younger white people. To posit an 'unknown x' of government corruption is one thing, as obviously there are problems in government. To posit, instead, an unknown x of 'secret Jewish powers,' is quite a different approach, as what now are the grounds for saying, it is the Jewish animosity which is also the causative factor in our world? At a basic logic level, there is no direct logic connection between 'Jew' and 'voting....' The basis for these empirical claims of special Jewish powers to corrupt - must lie with something the alt right leaders just haven't manage to tell us yet, or, as is more likely, lie with pure fancy, contrivance."

Book Richard Wagner

Download or read book Richard Wagner written by Joachim Köhler and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major new biography of Richard Wagner is iconoclastic, astringent and bold. It explores the philosophical roots of Wagner's work, which the composer himself deliberately obfuscated. It re-evaluates Wagner's relationships with his mother, step-father and - most revealingly - his wife, Cosima, standing received opinion on its head. And he meets head on, and confirms, the controversy over Wagner's anti-semitism. At the same time, and notwithstanding, Kohler profoundly acknowledges Wagner's genius.
