Book excerpt: Thanking him for the maps of Troy, discussing his views on the position of the Trojan camp; describing a bronze vase that he has sent home and adding "I am so apt to give away my goods, that now in my old age & infirmities I am resolved to sell it, & as I know it is well worth 100£ being I believe quite unique. I have desired Mr. Gaudy to destroy it if I cannot get at least 50 for it as I will not be cheated because I was born a gentleman any more - So if you know of any persons who purchase such articles, or the Museum I shall be glad if you will promote the sale of it;" discussing the status of the excavation of the Roman Forum; adding "...there are some hopes of seeing a great part of the Forum cleared as they have promised to unite the 3 parts already excavated down to the pavement at the Comitia, the arch of Severus & the column of Phoras. My infirmities have increased to such a degree that I do not expect to be able to undertake a journey across the Alps very speedily but the Doctors wish to persuade me the contrary & that I am to get well by magnesia & Rheubarb though it is rather late as I have scarcely been able to walk alone since my last trip to England. I hope you continue well & still have pleasure in your treasures of art in London & nature at Downton."

Raoul Rochette on the inscriptions of the Abbé Fourmont; saying that if Knight does not choose to write on the subject again "...the assertions of the french will triumph & the world in general will believe the inscriptions authentic - I am of the number of those who wish to be convinced, but who see nothing as yet to render probable the statements of Fourmont or R. Rochette. My arguments only apply to the temple of Onga & the list of Priestesses, for many of the other inscriptions are visible to any traveller of the present day, & have nothing so very remarkable or disputable;" outlining at length and in detail his arguments on the inscriptions and including the inscriptions throughout in Greek; referring to Dr. Abramiote and Chateaubriand.

Book The Letters of Sir Joseph Banks

Download or read book The Letters of Sir Joseph Banks written by Joseph Banks and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Joseph Banks was a great Georgian figure. He circumnavigated the world with Captain James Cook on the H.M.S. Endeavor (1768-1771). He took with him a team of naturalists, illustrators and assistants at a personal cost of pounds 10,000. They made unprecedented collections of flora and fauna in most of the places the H.M.S. Endeavor visited. Banks also led the first British scientific expedition to Iceland, in 1772. Later, he settled in London and assembled an enormous herbarium-cum-library. This was remarkable for its size and for the unique material gathered from the Pacific. Banks was elected President of the Royal Society in 1778, a position he held for 41 years -- the longest anyone has served in that capacity. He was also the Director of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, which flourished under his control and became greater than any other. He was also an influential privy councilor and advisor to George III and the government. Banks was therefore at the scientific and social centre ofGeorgian life for more than five decades of rapid change. Once established in this position, he developed an enormous, global network of correspondence, using letters to shape events, to further knowledge, and to build an empire. There was almost no aspect too insignificant for his attention: and on matters of importance, his opinion was frequently sought. He has been called the "Fathers of Australia" for his role in establishing and then actively supporting colonies on the continent he visited with Cook. On matters of trade or agriculture, botany or horticulture, exploration or navigation, coinage, drainage and science, his views could hardly be avoided. Yet, he was a warm, authoritativewriter, with a "roiling" prose style. His letters make interesting reading for their variety as well as their insight into both his public and private life. This selection is from the over 5,000 letters which he wrote, and will in

Book Horace Walpole s Letters

Download or read book Horace Walpole s Letters written by George E. Haggerty and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-12 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In looking closely at Horace Walpole's Correspondence, George E. Haggerty shows how these letters, when taken in aggregate, offer an astonishingly vivid account of the vagaries of eighteenth-century masculinity. Walpole talks about himself obsessively: his wants, his needs, his desires; hies physical and mental pain; his artistic appreciation and his critical responses. It is impossible to read these letters and not come away with a vivid impression of a complex personality from another age. Haggerty examines the ways in which Walpole presents himself as an eighteenth-century gentleman, and considers his personal relationships, his needs and aspirations, his emotionalism and his rationality - in short, his construction of himself - in order to see what it tells us about the age in general and more specifically, about masculinity in an era of social flux. This study of Walpole and his epistolary relations offers a unique window into both the history of masculinity in the eighteenth century and the codification of friendship as the preeminent value in western culture. Recent studies have tried to rewrite Walpole in a twenty-first century mold while this work looks at the writer and the ways in which he constructs himself and his relations, not in hopes of uncovering a lurid secret, but rather in pursuit of the figure that he created and that has fascinated generations of readers and writers since the eighteenth century.

Book Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho an African

Download or read book Letters of the Late Ignatius Sancho an African written by Ignatius Sancho and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contemporary critic described Ignatius Sancho as “what is very uncommon for men of his complexion, A man of letters.” A London shopkeeper, former butler, and descendant of slaves, Sancho was the first author of African descent to have his correspondence published. He was also a critic of literature, music, and art; a composer; and an advocate for the abolition of slavery. Sancho’s letters reveal an avid reader and prolific author, and his epistolary style shows a sophisticated understanding of both private and public audiences. Even after the abolition of the slave trade, proponents of equal rights on both sides of the Atlantic continued to use Sancho as an exemplar of the intellectual and moral capacity of people of African descent. In addition to the annotated letters by Sancho, this edition includes Laurence Sterne's letters to Sancho, Sancho's surviving autograph writings, and a selection of the many eighteenth-century responses to Sancho and his letters.
