No attempt has been made to give a searching analysis of these characterisations, for this is a record of facts rather than of opinions. Wherever this purpose appears to have been departed from, it has been only with the idea of offering side-lights which would illuminate the facts. The narrative is based first of all on the confidences of his wife; on my own intimate acquaintance extending over the last ten years of his life; and on unreserved access to all his papers and letters.
