Download or read book Richard Harding Davis War in Cuba Spanish American War written by Richard Harding Davis and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined Spanish-American War writings of a pioneering American Correspondent Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) remains important as the first American War correspondent to cover the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War and the First World War. He was indisputably talented and his writings ranged from journalism to novels, several of which were adapted for the screen in the silent film era. This original Leonaur book combines his writings on the conflict in Cuba with his correspondence written in the same period, including 'Cuba in Wartime' and relevant extracts from 'Adventures and Letters of Richard Harding Davis' and 'Notes of War'. Davis was a friend to Theodore Roosevelt and was instrumental in the creation of the legends surrounding 'The Rough Riders' and was made an honorary member of the regiment. The book is enhanced by the inclusion of several line illustrations by the well-known American artist Frederic Remington. This is a recommended edition for those interested in fine journalism, the war or Davis himself. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Book excerpt: Before the start of the Spanish-American War, newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst sent star reporter Richard Harding Davis and acclaimed illustrator Frederic Remington to Cuba to cover the simmering rebellion. Remington grew restless at his post and assured his employer that nothing newsworthy was likely to occur; Hearst reputedly replied, "Please remain. You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war."This controversial 1897 book played an integral part in the United States' involvement in the conflict. Richard Harding Davis was among the most famous and widely read journalists of his era. His sensational reports, which combined a sense of adventure with a highly personal perspective, anticipated the more literary journalism of later decades. Davis's accounts of Spanish atrocities and misconduct helped pave the way for a war that led to the establishment of American colonies in the Caribbean and Pacific. Crackling with energy and drama, these historic and highly readable reports are complemented by 24 of Remington's atmospheric illustrations.

Book excerpt: Richard Harding Davis was an American journalist and writer of fiction and drama, known foremost as the first American war correspondent to cover the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War, and the First World War. His writing greatly assisted the political career of Theodore Roosevelt. Author and journalist Richard Harding Davis, one of the most popular newspaper writers and novelists at the turn of the 20th century, may well be the source of the image of the dashing war correspondent. He represented the growing power of the press as the mass media's influence was expanding, and this controversial 1898 book is an early example of the manipulative power of the press. Dispatched by William Randolph Hearst to cover the guerilla war in Cuba for Hearst's newspaper the New York Journal, Davis filed vibrant, dramatic reports that may have brought the United States into the conflict, launching the Spanish-American War. Gathered in this book, and illustrated by Frederic Remington, is Davis's account of war-torn Cuba: muscular, adventurous prose about a dangerous time and place filled with a passion that infected his readers and may have changed the course of international affairs.

Book excerpt: An analysis of the beginnings of American imperial rhetoric; This is a study of the early writings of Richard Harding Davis, the premier American journalist of the 1890s, best remembered for his coverage of the Spanish-American War. The emphasis of the book is on Davis's reporting - including several volumes of travel writing, covering trips to the Near East and South and Central America. Some account is also made of his fiction, most especially Soldiers of Fortune (1897), which critics have seen as a romantic treatment of the imperialist elan. As such, the novel serves as a prolegomenon to the war in Cuba, which Davis covered during its insurrectionist stage. He later accompanied Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders when U.S. forces invaded the island in 1898, an action he had urged and may have in part inspired. John Seelye argues that Davis, rather than supporting the notion of an American empire on the Roman or British plan, advocated what would become U.S. strategy over the next century: a limited engagement in support of embryonic democratic movements in the Caribbean, followed by withdrawal of armed forces once a stable government had been established. While approving British m
