Book Criminal Juries in the 21st Century

Download or read book Criminal Juries in the 21st Century written by Cynthia Najdowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jury is often hailed as one of the most important symbols of American democracy. Yet much has changed since the Sixth Amendment in 1791 first guaranteed all citizens the right to a jury trial in criminal prosecutions. Experts now have a much more nuanced understanding of the psychological implications of being a juror, and advances in technology and neuroscience make the work of rendering a decision in a criminal trial more complicated than ever before. Criminal Juries in the 21st Century explores the increasingly wide gulf between criminal trial law, procedures, and policy, and what scientific findings have revealed about the human experience of serving as a juror. Readers will contemplate myriad legal issues that arise when jurors decide criminal cases as well as cutting-edge psychological research that can be used to not only understand the performance and experience of the contemporary criminal jury, but also to improve it. Chapter authors grapple with a number of key issues at the intersection of psychology and law, guiding readers to consider everything from the factors that influence the initial selection of the jury to how jurors cope with and reflect on their service after the trial ends. Together the chapters provide a unique view of criminal juries with the goal of increasing awareness of a broad range of current issues in great need of theoretical, empirical, and legal attention. Criminal Juries in the 21st Century will identify how social science research can inform law and policy relevant to improving justice within the jury system, and is an essential resource for those who directly study jury decision making as well as social scientists generally, attorneys, judges, students, and even future jurors.

Also included are a few letters to his grandmother, an aunt and uncle and occasional letters to Richard from friends. Documents in the collection are photocopies of the original holograph letters. The letters (dated from Sept. 18, 1943 to August 31, 1945) describe basic training, conditions of daily Army life, experiences in an Army hospital, books, games and movies available as entertainment, various south Pacific locations including the people living there, and military operations and movements. The letter dated August 17, 1945 announces the surrender of the Japanese. Several of the letters written in 1944 and 1945 make only vague references to location (e.g., "somewhere on the Pacific Ocean"), examples of censorship of details of military operations.

Book Understanding the Financial Industry Through Linguistics

Download or read book Understanding the Financial Industry Through Linguistics written by Richard C. Robinson and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an essential read for any professional dealing with data and information challenges. Imagine a collection of villages all beset upon by monsters. One village defeats their monsters using silver bullets. They convince all surrounding villages that their solution should be the only standard. The next village uses silver bullets to repel the monsters but fail! Why? Because the first village was fighting werewolves, the second village was fighting vampires. This is our data challenge–recognizing not all problems are the same - and there are no single silver bullet solutions. There are many communities within financial services, each with nuanced needs that require slightly different solutions to address what may look like the same problem. The financial services industry is unique for being based upon information and communication. It is the failure in understanding that multiple existing financial languages exist and pursuing interoperability that sits at the crux of financial crisis – not the lack of a single unified financial language. This book is an essential read for any professional dealing with data and information challenges. The author presents a new, unique approach to broad industry issues, leveraging applied linguistics and discusses how to break barriers that exist between language and data; the aim to make it easier for the financial industry (including regulators) to communicate - for the benefit of all investors. Unconventional in the cross-disciplinary pairing of applied linguistics and financial services, it is practical and intuitive in pursuing solutions. While focused on financial services, the approach is relevant for other industries that have similar challenges.

Book Environmental Organizations and Reasoned Discourse

Download or read book Environmental Organizations and Reasoned Discourse written by Richard M. Robinson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the meaning and role of “fair and reasoned discourse” in the context of our institutions for environmental decision processes. The book reviews the roles of our “environmental advocacy organizations”—such as The Sierra Club, The Audubon Society, the Environmental Defense Fund—in providing and ensuring that our discourse and decisions are fair and reasoned according to the criteria of being (i) inclusive of input from all affected, (ii) informed of relevant scientific and socio-economic information, (iii) uncorrupted by direct conflicts of interest, and (iv) logical according robust review by uncorrupted judges. These organizations are described and examined as expressions of “collective imperfect duty,” i.e. the coordinated duties with environmental direction. The current state of our discourse is examined in light of this fairness criteria, particularly in consideration of the cross-border problems that threaten tragedies of the global commons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the United States can provide equal educational opportunity to every child The United States Supreme Court closed the courthouse door to federal litigation to narrow educational funding and opportunity gaps in schools when it ruled in San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez in 1973 that the Constitution does not guarantee a right to education. Rodriguez pushed reformers back to the state courts where they have had some success in securing reforms to school funding systems through education and equal protection clauses in state constitutions, but far less success in changing the basic structure of school funding in ways that would ensure access to equitable and adequate funding for schools. Given the limitations of state school funding litigation, education reformers continue to seek new avenues to remedy inequitable disparities in educational opportunity and achievement, including recently returning to federal court. This book is the first comprehensive examination of three issues regarding a federal right to education: why federal intervention is needed to close educational opportunity and achievement gaps; the constitutional and statutory legal avenues that could be employed to guarantee a federal right to education; and, the scope of what a federal right to education should guarantee. A Federal Right to Education provides a timely and thoughtful analysis of how the United States could fulfill its unmet promise to provide equal educational opportunity and the American Dream to every child, regardless of race, class, language proficiency, or neighborhood.

Under this leaders’, leadership, his vision for the future of The Family becomes a hastened reality, while leaving a trail of bodies, and bloodshed throughout the inner city streets of Miami. As The Family continues being a folklore whispered amongst the living, and a reality burnt into the corneas of the dead; this leader decides to grow his organization with the help of an old Jamaican friend, who provides this leader with the appropriate resources, and a pinnacle relationship with a close Cuban friend, who is a major cocaine kingpin within the south, which will help this leader reach his goal of ultimate wealth, and success for himself, and his team. Yet, this leader learns quickly, that he is in for more than he could have ever expected, as the saying goes "with more money, comes more problems". While juggling his Jamaican friend, Cuban connection, and The Family the last things this leader needs now is turmoil, and ruckus, yet a beef with local young street hustler seems to be just that, and it becomes apparent to this leader that this beef with this young street hustler may cause a rift in all of this leaders’ plans, and possibly be the death of him.
