Book excerpt: This book presents cutting-edge research on memory in the age of the Internet and social media. The empirical studies reported in the ten chapters address the influence of the digital age on remembering in three broad areas: offloading memory and the associated costs, benefits, and boundary conditions; autobiographical memory online; and false memory at a time of fake news and misinformation. These studies employ innovative and rigorous methodological approaches that are ecologically valid in the online context. Their findings reveal complex and dynamic characteristics of human memory in a digitally mediated world that shapes our learning, our sense of self, and our beliefs and decision making. Collectively, the chapters in this volume provide rich theoretical insights into the workings and functions of memory. This book ushers in a new era of research on memory in the age of digitization. Memory Online will be a beneficial read for students and scholars of Psychology, Cognitive Science, Communication, and Media Studies. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Memory.

Book Hunger of Memory

Download or read book Hunger of Memory written by Richard Rodriguez and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2004-02-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunger of Memory is the story of Mexican-American Richard Rodriguez, who begins his schooling in Sacramento, California, knowing just 50 words of English, and concludes his university studies in the stately quiet of the reading room of the British Museum. Here is the poignant journey of a “minority student” who pays the cost of his social assimilation and academic success with a painful alienation — from his past, his parents, his culture — and so describes the high price of “making it” in middle-class America. Provocative in its positions on affirmative action and bilingual education, Hunger of Memory is a powerful political statement, a profound study of the importance of language ... and the moving, intimate portrait of a boy struggling to become a man.

Book Languaging Without Languages

Download or read book Languaging Without Languages written by Robin Sabino and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on usage-based theory, neurocognition, and complex systems, Languaging Beyond Languages elaborates an elegant model accommodating accumulated insights into human language even as it frees linguistics from its two-thousand-year-old, ideological attachment to reified grammatical systems. Idiolects are redefined as continually emergent collections of context specific, probabilistic memories entrenched as a result of domain-general cognitive processes that create and consolidate linguistic experience. Also continually emergent, conventionalization and vernacularization operate across individuals producing the illusion of shared grammatical systems. Conventionalization results from the emergence of parallel expectations for the use of linguistic elements organized into syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships. In parallel, vernacularization indexes linguistic forms to sociocultural identities and stances. Evidence implying entrenchment and conventionalization is provided in asymmetrical frequency distributions.

Book Memory Consciousness and the Brain

Download or read book Memory Consciousness and the Brain written by Endel Tulving and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory and consciousness have been objects of fascination to psychologists and other brain scientists for over one hundred years. Because of the complexity of the two topics, however, and despite great efforts spent on their study, the progress in their understanding over most of this time has been rather slow. Recently, thanks to new techniques and to changing pre-theoretical orientations, the study of the role of the brain in memory and consciousness has received an immense boost, and has become a central focus of research activity by thousands of researchers worldwide. The volume reviews recent progress on our understanding of memory, consciousness and the brain and identifies a number of acute outstanding problems. The purpose of the volume, based on a conference in Tallinn, is to look to the future, and not simply to share knowledge from ongoing research. In this sense, the volume does not contain a comprehensive overview of the field, but rather showcases a selection of exciting ideas in cognitive neuroscience. Contributors include some of the world's best-known cognitive brain scientists who have greatly contributed to our understanding of memory as a relation between the brain and the mind, as well as a number of highly promising younger researchers in the field. Memory, Consciousness and the Brain will be essential reading for anyone interested in the latest cutting-edge thinking at the interface of these topics, and in the future directions in which it may take us.

  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2008-06-23
  • ISBN : 0801897033
  • Pages : 171 pages

Download or read book Remembering Home written by Habib Chaudhury and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research has shown that stimulating early memories can have positive effects for persons with dementia or related disorders and can energize the relationships between such persons and their families, friends, and caregivers. Remembering Home emphasizes the importance of home in the lives of memory-challenged adults, offers insight into the richness and variety of life experiences associated with the idea of home, and suggests ways in which caregivers can encourage reminiscences to improve the quality of life for those with dementia or associated diseases. This volume advances the goals of affirming the dignity of and reinforcing personhood in adults with debilitating memory loss. Environmental gerontologist Habib Chaudhury draws on research and fieldwork—along with the stories and actions of persons with dementia and their loved ones—to discuss dementia and the concept of self. He shows how recollections of home can reach persons with compromised mental capacity, and he shares techniques designed to spark conversation and stimulate participation in group and one-on-one activities. Chaudhury encourages health care professionals and activity leaders to embrace a personhood-affirming mode of care and provides tools and information for nonprofessionals who want to connect with, understand, and better appreciate people with dementia.

Book Life Is Bless and Love Is Bliss

Download or read book Life Is Bless and Love Is Bliss written by TheCritics and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Life is bless and love is bliss', is an ode; an ode to life and love. It is a compilation of poetry. Each poetry shares a story; a story that will make you laugh, a story that will make you feel and a story that will make you think. If the entire collection of poems are read together it explains a tale; the tale of human life. The author has divided life as a human into various forms; 'The crawler, the learner, the explorer, the first seeker, the lover, the solitude dreamer, the runner, the second seeker, the third seeker, the second crawler and the sleeper.' The curtains are finally drawn with the sleeper. From crawler to second crawler the humans are offered choices; the choices are love. Every form in life seeks the very love and if it is found there is serenity. The poetry under each form expalins love that one spreads and seeks in each form. The final form, 'the sleeper' where the soulless lays down explains that life and its purpose is very simple. The purpose is love and survive.
