Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhys Lewis, Minister of Bethel: An Autobiography The Minister of Bethel has now for some time been peacefully reposing beneath the turf of the Valley. In his day he was reckoned a wise and an unassuming man, those best acquain ted with him being Wont to say there was more in him than was seen on the surface. Although as a minister of the Gospel he was a public character, as it is called, he was always averse to making a parade of himself. As a preacher he was not popular, chiefly because he could not sing, which was a great drawback. Nevertheless, he had at all times something to say which was well worth the listening to; and I have heard men of mature judgment aver that his sermons, were they printed, would compare favourably with the best produc tions of the Welsh pulpit. Indeed, the few things from his pen which appeared in the Tractarian were attributed to Dr. And were read with avidity. In those days, writers' names were not appended to their productions in that valuable quarterly. Even if they had been, probably no one would have gone to the trouble of reading the contributions of Rhys Lawis. His pastorate was, on the whole, a happy and a successful one. It must be admitted, however, that this was but an acci dent of the situation, due chiefly to the fact that the majority of the Church to which he ministered were possessed of a good deal of common sense and just a little of Christian feeling. Book excerpt: James Harris's 1888 translation of the classic Welsh novel by Daniel Owen.Three young men of similar parentage choose contrasting paths through life. Will Bartley, mischievous and charming, sets his sights on success in business, while Robert Lewis the mineworker, unjustly excluded from the Methodist chapel, begins a political crusade against injustice. Meanwhile, Robert’s younger brother, Rhys, has set his heart on becoming a preacher. This classic novel, teeming with strikers, shop-keepers, farmers and thieves, provides a vivid cross-section of Wales at a turning point in its history, and a profound meditation on the conflict between the strictures of morality and the goodness of the heart.Daniel Owen (1836-1895), the son of a coalminer killed in a mining accident, and the apprentice of a draper and Methodist elder, became a poet and short-story writer, and one of the first and greatest of Welsh-language novelists.

Book excerpt: "Mae arnaf flys ysgrifennu hanes fy mywyd fy hun, nid i eraill, ond i mi fy hun; ac yn sicr nid i'w argraffu, ond yn hytrach fel math o hunan-gymundeb." Er protestiadau Rhys Lewis mae ei hunangofiant ar gael dros ganrif ers ei chyhoeddi. Disgrifia Rhys Lewis ei fywyd adref gyda'i fam a'i frawd Bob, yn yr ysgol dan law llym Robyn y Sowldiwr, fel prentis yn siop Abel Hughes ac fel myfyriwr yng Ngholeg y Bala cyn cael ei benodi'n Weinidog Capel Bethel. Mae'r penodau yng nghwmni Wil Bryan a Thomas Bartley yn hwyliog a doniol ond mae tristwch mawr yng nghefndir teulu'r Lewisiaid - perthynas Robert a Mary, damwain erchyll Bob yn y pwll glo a salwch Rhys ar ôl dychwelyd i Bethel. Roedd Daniel Owen, 1836-1895, yn deiliwr yn Yr Wyddgrug ac yn disgrifio'i gymdeithas ar ddiwedd y 19eg Ganrif.

Book Comparative Stylistics of Welsh and English

Download or read book Comparative Stylistics of Welsh and English written by Steve Morris and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-07-15 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comparative analysis of Welsh and English found in this book is based on a translation corpus consisting of just over thirty novels and autobiographies from the late nineteenth century up to the early twenty-first century. Many of the original Welsh texts contain stylistic features which, in a context of intense bilingualism with English, benefit from the deliberate discussion and analysis in this volume. However, the work is intentionally descriptive rather than prescriptive, laying out patterns that are observed in the corpus, and making them available to Welsh writers and translators to adopt if or as required. As similarly the classic work in the field by Vinay and Darbelnet, this book examines its topics through the lens of translation techniques such as transposition, modulation and adaptation.
