Book Rhode Island s Haunted Ramtail Factory

Download or read book Rhode Island s Haunted Ramtail Factory written by Thomas D'Agostino and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officially listed as haunted by the Rhode Island Census, this dilapidated Foster factory gives up its secrets to New England’s resident ghost experts. On May 19, 1822, Peleg Walker was found dead inside Foster’s Ramtail Factory. Almost ten years earlier, he and four other family members had made the fateful decision to start a business. Legend has it that when relations soured over arguments about money, the partnership ended, with Peleg hanging from the very bell rope he rang each morning to signal the change in shift. Whether he took his own life or was murdered remains a mystery. Recognized as a haunted site since 1885, the factory now lies in ruins. Yet Peleg still keeps vigil over its remains, sounding his night watchman’s bell and drifting with his candle lantern in hand. Authors Tom D’Agostino and Arlene Nicholson share over two decades of research into the mysterious history of Rhode Island’s haunted factory. Includes photos! “Over the past twenty-five years, D’Agostino has explored scores of sites and produced several books on his adventures, including Haunted Rhode Island. When snooping for spooks, he and his wife, Arlene, carry a briefcase of high-tech gadgetry to document his findings.” —Rhode Island Monthly

Book excerpt: The mentalist, mindbinder, and author of Haunted Providence delves into the 19th-century murder of Sarah Maria Cornell. “If I should be missing, enquire of the Rev. Mr. Avery of Bristol, he will know where I am.” This scribbled note belonged to Sarah M. Cornell, written the day her body was found hanged in a rural pasture in Tiverton, Rhode Island. An unmarried young woman of limited means, Sarah was four months pregnant, and a married Methodist minister stood accused as the father. Local authorities grew skeptical of Sarah’s apparent suicide as Reverend Avery’s conduct appeared increasingly suspect, and eventually the extensive evidence of their tortured relationship set off a groundswell of public interest and media attention never before seen in 1830s New England. This tragic crime left the nation clamoring for justice and became one of early America’s most sensational murder trials.

Book Muslims and Christians in Norman Sicily

Download or read book Muslims and Christians in Norman Sicily written by Dr Alexander Metcalfe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social and linguistic history of medieval Sicily is both intriguing and complex. Before the Muslim invasion of 827, the islanders spoke dialects of either Greek or Latin or both. On the arrival of the Normans around 1060 Arabic was the dominant language, but by 1250 Sicily was an almost exclusively Christian island, with Romance dialects in evidence everywhere. Of particular importance to the development of Sicily was the formative period of Norman rule (1061 1194), when most of the key transitions from an Arabic-speaking Muslim island to a 'Latin'-speaking Christian one were made. This work sets out the evidence for those changes and provides an authoritative approach that re-defines the conventional thinking on the subject.

Book The Dinosaur Filmography

Download or read book The Dinosaur Filmography written by Mark F. Berry and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From classics like King Kong, to beloved B-movies like The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, to blockbusters like Jurassic Park, it's easy to see that filmmakers and audiences alike love to see dinosaurs on the screen. This comprehensive filmography, arranged alphabetically by title, contains entries that include basic facts (year of release, country of origin, studio, and running time), followed by a concise plot summary, the author's critical commentary, information on the production and the people behind it, and secrets of the often-ingenious special effects. Three useful appendices feature films with minor dinosaur content, planned but unfinished dinosaur movies, and the quasi-dinosaurs of Toho Studios. To be included, a movie must depict one or more representations of a "prehistoric reptile." Inaccurate portrayals are included, as long as the intent is to represent a real or fictional dinosaur. Not eligible are films featuring prehistoric mammals, prehistoric humans or humanoids, and beasts of mythology--unless, of course, the movie also has a dinosaur.

Book Weights Measures and Tokens

Download or read book Weights Measures and Tokens written by Mabel L. Lang and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this book deals with weights (14 bronze, 109-111 lead, 28 stone) and measures (75 dry, 28-31 liquid). Although humble objects, the detailed study of these everyday items provides archaeological evidence for substantial changes in weight standards at different times in Athenian history. This reinforces literary evidence for a highly centralized bureaucracy controlling trade and commerce. In the second part of the book, Crosby catalogues and discusses some 900 lead and 46 clay tokens uncovered during the Agora excavations. The bulk of the lead material dates from the Roman period, while all the clay pieces belong to the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd centuries B.C. These tokens served diverse functions. Some were used as admission tickets for festivals and theater performances while others can be related to attendance at lawcourts or receipt of tax payments.
