Book excerpt: Clare Rainbow-Dashell, the only child of delightfully eccentric, wealthy hippies, has just taken a hiatus from her career as an acclaimed wildlife photographer and returned to California to pursue her academic dreams when a disastrous affair with a professor catapults her to another continent: Africa. There, she immerses herself in well-paid commercial work for a luxury safari lodge as she seeks to regain her emotional and financial self-reliance. All this, however, is complicated by her relationship with her charismatic, imperious employer and her undeniable attraction to a leading black rhino specialist—two men who are at war over both environmental politics and Clare herself. Set against the formidable backdrop of the Namib Desert, Rhino Dreams dramatizes the crisis of endangered species preservation and the horrors of poaching, interweaving this very real ecological darkness with the internal and external battles of three characters driven by fierce passions and divided notions of duty, ambition, and desire. It is a sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant ride—and, in the end, a testimony to how tenuous and precious both life and love can be.

  • Pages : 192 pages

Download or read book The Rhino written by Pat Britt and published by . This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly forty years, my dreams have been dominated by a large, earthy, gravelly-voiced rhinoceros. He may appear by himself or with his numerous friends: dung beetles, tigers, turtles, stars, and many others. Occasionally his friends come without him. He travels easily through the world. Sometimes he carries me on his back; sometimes we meet in a specified location. But wherever we traveled, I always felt there was a purpose to the trip and that I was missing the point. He seemed to be the trickster- the oracle who gives a technically correct but misleading answer to our most basic questions. I often thought he wanted me to view life as a whole, not with the limited eye of my rational self. Then he seemed symbolic of the onrushing flow of life. I finally realized he speaks for life-all life, not just human life, but for the lives of animals and plants, for the life of the earth itself. His message is that we must turn away from our arrogance and learn again to live with the rhinos, the crocodiles, with all the natural, instinctive forms of life- now, before they are all gone, leaving us alone, alienated and doomed to quick extinction. Gradually I began to understand that he wanted to reach a wider audience, to be published. This book is a partial fulfillment of that desire. - Pat Britt

Book excerpt: Pride and patriotism go hand in hand, even when protesting your own government. Interweaving the political and the personal, this collection of poems speaks out on important issues facing the United States today, from gay rights, gun violence, and black lives to technology, the environment, fundamentalist religion, and beyond. kurtis has written a poetic manifesto firmly rooted in our times while keenly keeping an eye on the past, whether in the title poem’s evocation of the Queen of Sheba or references to ancient Greece and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in “the pillaged edifice.” exam(i)nation questions many things about the era we live in but reaches out in an intersectional embrace to tell stories about who we are collectively, filtering our light through a prism that renders a beautiful rainbow.

Book Understanding Dreams

Download or read book Understanding Dreams written by Ray Douglas and published by Dreamstairway Books. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the reader through the entire gamut of dream analysis and interpretation, with the emphasis on family life. A family unit is a rather special entity, bound together by the invisible bonds of intuition. Everybody is linked to some degree at an intuitional level, but the family especially so. One way to discover these golden bonds of intuition is by recording, remembering and understanding your own, your partner's, your parents', and your children's dreams. The more you study dreams, the more significant they are apt to become, and the more important for our well-being.

Book Decoding Your Dreams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the deepest insights from your dreams, you can find out more about who you are and your purpose in life, then discern what gifts you are born to give to others and your needs that others can meet. The author has pioneered a theory of the progressive development of dreams throughout the sleeping period. He shows how our dreams are expressions of the underlying dreams of nature itself, the secret life of the Gaia world revealed as a vast, living, self-regulating organism. The key to this unique and dramatic interpretive method unfolds in fantastically illustrated pages that explain how to keep and use a dream journal to identify your most important patterns and themes, and analyze their messages.

Book Dreaming Souls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Owen Flanagan
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2001-05-17
  • ISBN : 019534958X
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Dreaming Souls written by Owen Flanagan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-05-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--"unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys"? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. And in Dreaming Souls he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, "free riders," irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Indeed, Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when we're sleeping. Rejecting Freud's theory of manifest and latent content--of repressed wishes appearing in disguised form--Flanagan shows how brainstem activity during sleep generates a jumbled profusion of memories, images, thoughts, emotions, and desires, which the cerebral cortex then attempts to shape into a more or less coherent story. Such dream-narratives range from the relatively mundane worries of non REM sleep to the fantastic confabulations of deep REM that resemble psychotic episodes in their strangeness. But however bizarre these narratives may be, they can shed light on our mental life, our well being, and our sense of self. Written with clarity, lively wit, and remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if life really does come with a reset button? Today's society places all its attention on things like money, physical attraction, and power. Everywhere we look we are bombarded by images and messages telling us we won't be happy until we look a certain way and buy some new product. The choices we make in pursuit of these things often leave us frustrated and wanting more. Sometimes we wish we could just hit Reset and try again. The Life Question: Accidental Success by Design seeks to remove the blinders and discover the true elements that lead to happiness and prosperity. By first exploring the various concepts involved, understanding how each works individually, and then learning how to use them in conjunction with each other, anyone can learn to master their desires. Rather than just making money, how do you generate wealth? Instead of just being married, how do you love and enjoy your spouse? Rather than feeling run down and worthless, how can you feel more joy and meaning than ever? Instead of just becoming powerful, how can you become influential and leave a lasting legacy? The Life Question: Accidental Success by Design is an in-depth look at many of the lessons we seem to have lost today. It explores not what to think, but how to think to create lasting joy and success. Armed with knowledge like this, you will find you have the ability to hit the reset button and create a whole new life for yourself. One entirely designed on your terms. The game of life is complicated because most of the pieces, moves, and rules are never taught to us. Once we start seeing the game in its entirety, we begin to notice new strategies and more effective moves. The board has been reset. It's your move!
