The conceptual confrontation of different approaches, themes and forms of research has reached several academic fields in numerous countries. From the 1990s to the present Kari Palonen has shaped and supported this change with his emphasis on its role for the study of politics. The chapters of this volume offer a testimony of the changing awareness, new thematics and multiple research orientations of this story. Palonen discusses the works of Reinhart Koselleck and Quentin Skinner as partly competing, partly converging approaches to conceptual history. He applies both Koselleck's time-centred and Skinner's rhetorical perspectives in his own studies on theorising politics. Simultaneously he emphasises the heuristic impulse of both approaches for the study of political practices, for the reorientation of parliamentary studies in particular.

How does a contemporary political leader lead the people to construct a new symbolic reality? METAPHOR AND CHANGE redefines the concept of metaphor as it applies to politics and illustrates the use of the metaphoric-transfer model to analyze political communication. The model innovatively combines George Lakoff's approach to conceptual metaphor and Ernest Bormann's symbolic convergence theory to provide a holistic, eclectic approach to rhetorical analysis. Delgado Figueroa applies the model to the political rhetoric of Puerto Rico's charismatic and transformative leader Luis Muñoz Marín between 1948 and 1952, when he successfully used metaphor in chained-out fantasy themes to change attitudes toward the island's social and economic future. In the process he also connects the use of metaphor, to reveal and conceal social reality, in the rhetoric of movements on the left and on the right, as well as of governments such as Cuba, Puerto Rico and the United States.

Today there are major Departments at the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and the University of Wollongong, and smaller groups active in many other parts of Australia and in New Zealand. "Australasian Studies in History and Philosophy of Science" aims to provide a distinctive publication outlet for Australian and New Zealand scholars working in the general area of history, philosophy and social studies of science. Each volume comprises a group of essays on a connected theme, edited by an Australian or a New Zealander with special expertise in that particular area. Papers address general issues, however, rather than local ones; parochial topics are avoided. Further more, though in each volume a majority of the contributors is from Australia or New Zealand, contributions from elsewhere are by no means ruled out.
