Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the VIIth International Congress on Rheology, which was held in Goteborg in 1976, Proceedings were for the first time printed in advance and distributed to all participants at the time of the Congress. Although of course we Italians would be foolish to even try to emulate our Swedish friends as far as efficiency of organization is concerned, we decided at the very beginning that, as far as the Proceedings were concerned, the VIIIth International Congress on Rheology in Naples would follow the standards of time liness set by the Swedish Society of Rheology. This book is the result we have obtained. We wish to acknowledge the cooperation of Plenum Press in producing it within the very tight time schedule available. Every four years, the International Congress on Rheology represents the focal point where all rheologists meet, and the state of the art is brought up to date for everybody interested; the Proceedings represent the written record of these milestones of scientific progress in rheology. We have tried to make use of the traditions of having invited lectures, and of leaving to the organizing committee the freedom to choose the lecturers as they see fit, in order to collect a group of invited lectures which gives as broad as possible a landscape of the state of the art in every relevant area of rheology. The seventeen invited lectures are collected in the first volume of the proceedings.

Book Clinical Hemorheology

  • Author : S. Chien
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Clinical Hemorheology written by S. Chien and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task the editors have set themselves is to survey the field of clinical hemorheology from basic principles to up-to-date research. It is only in a new science like this that it is possible to span the whole field in a book of this size. Hemorheology, as a new approach to the study and management of a wide range of circulatory diseases, is now beginning to appear with increasing frequency in general as well as specialized medical journals. Hemorheology is also just beginning to creep into the undergraduate medical curriculum. Therefore, the majority of graduate doctors are unequipped to assess the place of hemorheology in the overall framework of circulatory physiology and pathology or to assess its relevance to their everyday practice. It is hoped that this book will fill this gap. The approach of the book is interdisciplinary. The first part deals with basic principles of blood flow, circulation and hemorheology. It has been written with the general doctor in mind, who has no special knowledge of hemodynamics and rheological concepts, terminology or methodology. To maintain the emphasis on practical clinical applications, all the chapters in the second part of the book have been written by clinical specialists practicing in the individual areas of disease. The book is so designed that clinicians may be able to read the relevant chapters in the second part of the book in isolation, using the basic science aspects contained in the first part of the book as reference chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hemodynamic significance of the flow properties of blood was put into perspective only during the past decade. Advances in modern technologies today allow the quantitative analy sis of the fluidity of blood and its components under conditions approximating the flow in vivo, particularly those in the microcirculation. The hematocrit is the most important of the determinants of blood fluidity (reciprocal value of blood viscosity); acute increases in the hematocrit exert deleterious effects on circulation and oxygen transport owing to impaired fluidity of blood. High viscosity of plasma due to hyper- or dysproteinemias initiates the microcirculatory dysfunctions in hyperviscosity syndromes. Furthermore, the fluidity or deformability of red cells might be critically diminished and therefore cause redistribution of blood elements and adversely affect the resistance to flow within the microvessels. In low flow states blood fluidity most likely becomes the key determinant for microvessel perfu sion, overriding the neural and local metabolic control mechanisms operative at physiological conditions to adjust blood supply to tissue demand. Microcirculatory disturbances are there fore encountered whenever driving pressures are reduced, as in shock or hypotension, and distal to stenoses of macrovessels, but also in hemoconcentration due to plasma volume con traction, polycythemia, leukemia, and dysproteinemia. Based on experimental studies exploring the possibilities and limitations, with regard to improving the fluidity of blood by reducing the hematocrit, the concept of intentional hemo dilution has been introduced to clinical medicine.

Book excerpt: This book is a dedicated resource for those sitting the Part A of the MCEM (Membership of the College of Emergency Medicine) examination. It forms an essential revision guide for emergency trainees who need to acquire a broad understanding of the basic sciences, which underpin their approach to clinical problems in the emergency department. Common clinical scenarios are used to highlight the essential underlying basic science principles, providing a link between clinical management and a knowledge of the underlying anatomical, physiological, pathological and biochemical processes. Multiple choice questions with reasoned answers are used to confirm the candidates understanding and for self testing. Unlike other recent revision books which provide MCQ questions with extended answers, this book uses clinical cases linked to the most recent basic science aspects of the CEM syllabus to provide a book that not only serves as a useful revision resource for the Part A component of the MCEM examination, but also a unique way of understanding the processes underlying common clinical cases seen every day in the emergency department. This book is essential for trainees sitting the Part A of the MCEM exam and for clinicians and medical students who need to refresh their knowledge of basic sciences relevant to the management of clinical emergencies.

Book Blood Filtration and Blood Cell Deformability

Download or read book Blood Filtration and Blood Cell Deformability written by John A. Dormandy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. J. Meiselman From the theoretical studies of Dr. Skalak, it is clear that white cells can significantly influence the pressure-time profile of a red cell/white cell suspen sion, and that the presence of even a small amount of relatively rigid white cells can have a profound effect on the filtration pressure during the latter portion of a filtration experiment. Conversely, white cell effects, regardless of their relative rigidity, are shown to have only minimal effects during the very early (i. e. , 0-2 seconds) phases of the filtration process. Dr. Chien's experimental data support these theoretical studies, in that white cells of different mechan ical properties exhibit different pressure-time curves; pressure-time data for mixtures of leucocytes show shapes which can be predicted from the behavior of relatively homogeneous cell populations. The insensitivity of the very early portions of the filtration process to white cells is again reflected in the calculations made by Dr. Hanss. Using the nominal dilutions, white cell concentrations and the total volume of filtered cell suspension, he indicates that usually less than 1 pore out of 100 is liable to blockage by white cells. He thus concludes that, at the 1% accuracy level, initial filtration data should not be affected by mechanical pore blockage by white cells. Experimental studies by Dr. Lowe and Dr. Stuart question the WBC insensitivity of the early portion of the filtration process. Using a constant flow system, Dr.

Book Biofluid Mechanics 2

Download or read book Biofluid Mechanics 2 written by D. J. Schneck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Engineering Science and Hechanics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University spon sored the First Mid-Atlantic Conference on Bio-Fluid Mechanics, which was held in Blacksburg, Virginia during the period 9-11 August 1978. Some 40 life-scientists, engineers, physicians and others who share a common interest in the advancement of basic and applied knowledge in bio fluid mechanics gathered at the Donaldson Brown Center for Continuing Education to hear 25 papers presented in seven technical sessions. At the conclusion of the conference, those present decided unanimously that its success warranted having at least one more -- and that it was conceptually a sound idea to plan it on a biennial basis for late spring. Hence, the second Mid-Atlantic Conference on Bio Fluid Mechanics took place at Virginia Tech on May 4-6, 1980. This volume documents the Proceedings of the second conference. It contains full texts of 23 contributed papers, 2 guest lectures and 1 invited seminar. The papers are gr9uped according to subject matter, beginning with 3 in the area of respiration, followed by 1 in kidney dialysis, 1 in reproduction, 1 in joint lubrication, 1 in prosthetic fluidics, 2 in zoology, and ending with 14 in the general field of cardiovascular dynamics. Of the latter, 5 deal with the subject of heart valves, 2 concern themselves with the microcirculation, 6 address vascular system hemodynamics and 1 covers some aspects of blood rheology.

Book Heart Perfusion Energetics and Ischemia

Download or read book Heart Perfusion Energetics and Ischemia written by Leopold Dintenfass and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principal purpose of a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Advanced Research Workshop, a part of the NATO Advanced Study Institutes Programme, is to: (a) exchange thoughts at the frontiers of knowledge or at the frontiers of two (or more) fields or sectors; (b) review and assess the state of the art; (c) formulate recommendations for future research directions; (d) formulate plans for large international scientific experiments. The aim of the ARW on "Microvascular, rheological, metabolic and heat-transfer aspects of the heart: relation to ischaemia and thrombosis", convened in Chateau de Bonas, July 4-11, 1982, was to describe functions and performance of the heart in an interdisciplin ary effort, involving cardiologists, pathologists, biochemists, haemorheologists, physiologists, pharmacologists and bioengineers; to explore interactions between such subfields as blood rheology, micro circulation and ischaemia of the myocardium, heat transfer, heat work and performance as a pump, effect of -metabolites and ion transfer, mechanism of sudden death, protein synthesis and protein molecular transformations. One of the purposes of the Convenor was to relate clinical haemorheology to the heart energetics and heart metabolism. This was only partly established, as difficulties of communications between different fields, difficulties of semantics and of specialized out looks could not be overcome within a -few days. Nevertheless, a gate was opened for communications interchange in the future. There was even a problem within each specialty, and as is rather common, quite diverse views have been expressed. This, of course, is quite normal in the progress of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book remains the same as that stated in the first edition: to present a comprehensive perspective of biomechanics from the stand point of bioengineering, physiology, and medical science, and to develop mechanics through a sequence of problems and examples. My three-volume set of Bio mechanics has been completed. They are entitled: Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues; Biodynamics: Circulation; and Biomechanics: Motion, Flow, Stress, and Growth; and this is the first volume. The mechanics prerequisite for all three volumes remains at the level of my book A First Course in Continuum Mechanics (3rd edition, Prentice-Hall, Inc. , 1993). In the decade of the 1980s the field of Biomechanics expanded tremen dously. New advances have been made in all fronts. Those that affect the basic understanding of the mechanical properties of living tissues are described in detail in this revision. The references are brought up to date.

Download or read book Therapeutic Hemorheology written by Albrecht M. Ehrly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hemorheologic therapy has gained considerably in importance in recent years. This detailed and comprehensive book enumerates, discusses, and critically evaluates those treatment methods in which therapeutic success rests essentially on achieving an improvement in hemodynamics. After a general account of clinical hemorheology, fundamental aspects of hemorheologic methods and the eval- uation and assessment of hemorheologic parameters are discussed and the pathophysiology is described in detail. The treatment methods and substances that bring about improvement of the hemodynamics are described in chronologic order of first publication, and in each case all known later publications are also discussed in the order in which they appeared. This topical account of hemorheologic therapy - the results reported to date and the spectrum of applications - will be a valuable addition to the library both of the specialist and of all interested doctors in hospital and general practice.
