Book Rheology and Soil Mechanics Rh ologie et M canique des Sols

Download or read book Rheology and Soil Mechanics Rh ologie et M canique des Sols written by J. Kravtchenko and published by Springer. This book was released on 1966-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long period Soil Mechanics has remained at the semi-empirica stage, and only a few decades ago it has shown a tendency to become a fundamental science. However, this evolution is taking place slowly; in spite of the efforts of numerous research scientists, the very complex rheological laws of soils are still not well known. Even if these laws were elucidated, it would take a long time still to deduce simple rules from them for reliable and convenient use in current practical engineer ing. In the pursuit of these distant aims - and of others more imme diate - fundamental research and applied research are very active, both in Rheology and Soil Mechanics. The complexity of the problems to be solved should incite the laboratory researchers and the engineers to a continuous collaboration. Everyone acknowledges the advantage of these connections although aware of the difficulty of realizing this wish. However, contacts are being made little by little between the repre sentatives of the different branches of Rheology and Soil Mechanics, to the great benefit of science. The bureau of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM), aware of the importance of these two associat ed fields of mechanics, considered it possible to accelerate the natural and necessary processus of their interpenetration by organizing in Grenoble, from 1st to 8th April 1964 an International Symposium on Rheology and Soil Mechanics.

Book Correlations in soil mechanics

Download or read book Correlations in soil mechanics written by Michel Dysli and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Rock and Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Rock and Soil Mechanics written by W. Derski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although theoretical in character, this book provides a useful source of information for those dealing with practical problems relating to rock and soil mechanics - a discipline which, in the view of the authors, attempts to apply the theory of continuum to the mechanical investigation of rock and soil media. The book is in two separate parts. The first part, embodying the first three chapters, is devoted to a description of the media of interest. Chapter 1 introduces the main argument and discusses the essence of the discipline and its links with other branches of science which are concerned, on the one hand, with technical mechanics and, on the other, with the properties, origins, and formation of rock and soil strata under natural field conditions. Chapter 2 describes mechanical models of bodies useful for the purpose of the discourse and defines the concept of the limit shear resistance of soils and rocks. Chapter 3 gives the actual properties of soils and rocks determined from experiments in laboratories and in situ. Several tests used in geotechnical engineering are described and interconnections between the physical state of rocks and soils and their rheological parameters are considered. The second part of the book considers the applications of various theories which were either first developed for descriptive purposes in continuum mechanics and then adopted in soil and rock mechanics, or were specially developed for the latter discipline. Chapter 4 discusses the application of the theory of linear viscoelasticity in solving problems of stable behaviour of rocks and soils. Chapter 5 covers the use of the groundwater flow theory as applied to several problems connected with water movement in an undeformable soil or rock skeleton. Chapter 6 is a natural expansion of the arguments put forward in the previous chapter. Here the movement of water is regarded as the cause of deformation of the rock or soil skeleton and the consolidation theory developed on this basis is presented in a novel formulation. Some new engineering solutions are also reported. The seventh chapter is devoted to the limit state theory as applied to the study of the mechanical behaviour of soils and rocks. It presents some new solutions and methods which include both static and kinematic aspects of the problem, and some original effective methods for investigating media of limited cohesion. The final chapter gives a systematic account of the mechanics of highly dispersed soils, commonly called clays.

Book Mechanics of Reinforced Soil

Its scope and level ensures it will be a valuable resource for students, academics and geotechnical engineering professionals alike.

Book Introduction to Soil Mechanics

Download or read book Introduction to Soil Mechanics written by Béla Bodó and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO SOIL MECHANICS Introduction to Soil Mechanics covers the basic principles of soil mechanics, illustrating why the properties of soil are important, the techniques used to understand and characterise soil behaviour and how that knowledge is then applied in construction. The authors have endeavoured to define and discuss the principles and concepts concisely, providing clear, detailed explanations, and a wellillustrated text with diagrams, charts, graphs and tables. With many practical, worked examples and end-of-chapter problems (with fully worked solutions available at www.wiley.com/go/bodo/soilmechanics) and coverage of Eurocode 7, Introduction to Soil Mechanics will be an ideal starting point for the study of soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. This book’s companion website is at www.wiley.com/go/bodo/soilmechanics and offers invaluable resources for both students and lecturers: Supplementary problems Solutions to supplementary problems
