Book RFID Supply Chain Management System for Naval Logistics

Download or read book RFID Supply Chain Management System for Naval Logistics written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Navy is charged with the responsibility of providing a strategic Maritime Pre-positioning Force (MPF). To accomplish this objective the supply chain management system must be designed to allow for real-time accountability, Total Asset Visibility (TAV), rapid deployment and In-Transit Visibility (ITV). The proposed solution consists of a functioning Dynamic Smart Manifest (DSM) embodied in the structure of a Dynamic Smart Box (DSB). A middle-ware called Inteliware interfaces with the RFID components and computers in the DSB and inputs the requisite data into the Dynamic Smart Manifest. The DSB will be housed in a twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) which is the Navy's standard shipping container. The TEU will be outfitted with a system of open sourced RFID readers and antennae designed to read the tagged pallets and items that enter or exit the container. A nested architecture of passive/active tags and nested frequencies will create an aggregate inventory of the TEU's content. The ability to track and update inventory as pallets/containers are reconfigured will be demonstrated. The automation of the process of preparing the pallet/container data will result in the DSM, that will in real time provide the ability to sense and respond, count, record, identify, track and locate items, cartons, pallets and containers.

Download or read book RFID Metrics written by William Oliver Hedgepeth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-11-15 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's hyper-competitive business climate, organizations are always under pressure to adapt to new technological trends or "hot" business process models. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is one such trend that promises to revolutionize logistical systems and provide total-lifecycle tracking of products. However, blindly adopting RFID technology without thoroughly considering its impact is just as dangerous as not adopting it at all. Based on the author's experience testing and implementing RFID technology in both industrial and military cases, RFID Metrics: Decision Making Tools for Today's Supply Chains explains how to evaluate the need for this technology. The author focuses on the problems RFID is meant to solve, if such problems exist in your organization, and the metrics you can use to make effective decisions. After establishing what RFID is and how it fits into the systems concept, the book discusses current RFID applications around the world, reveals key metrics for decision making as well as how to develop new metrics unique to RFID, demonstrates a war game for exploring RFID, and presents statistical methods for analyzing the data collected from the war games or gathered during implementation. While other books focus on the nuts and bolts of the technology, RFID Metrics is the first book to outline a detailed method for analyzing and deciding if RFID is right for your organization.

Book RFID technology introduction and impacts on supply chain management systems

Download or read book RFID technology introduction and impacts on supply chain management systems written by Roman Christian Rochel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,3, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel (Suppply Management Institute), course: Seminar of Logistics and Business Engineering, language: English, abstract: Today’s businesses face a dynamic and competitive environment which results in an ever increasing pressure on them to innovate, reinvent processes, and leverage the potential of supply chain partnerships. Current supply chain trends, as mentioned by McFarlane and Sheffi, include globalization, outsourcing, stock keeping unit (SKU) proliferation, and shorter product lifecycles.1 To enable these trends and to master the inherent challenges, companies must at all times have information and visibility about shipments, products and progress. Yet, this strongly needed information and visibility is not limited to the internal company supply chain but rather along the entire supply chain from the original supplier to the end customer. Thus, external supply chain integration on the basis of fine granularity of data has to be one of the primary objectives in today’s supply chain management efforts. One of the emerging technologies offering a solution for this aim is Radiofrequency Identification (RFID). RFID can facilitate automating and streamlining identification processes. This means more checkpoints along the supply chain can be established at decreased costs. However, not limited to that purpose, the technology offers additional benefits which make it superior to the automatic identification (Auto-ID) technology of the barcode currently in widespread use. Nonetheless, RFID is only a data-collection technology which must be integrated with the supply chain management systems of the companies. Furthermore, along the supply chain various information systems must be integrated in order to give a meaning to the data and to allow for information exchange. Although RFID technology has originally been developed decades ago, the industrial use of RFID in large scale supply chain operations has until now been prohibited due to the relatively high costs compared to other Auto-ID solutions. Recent mandates of large retail companies, such as WalMart and Metro Group, force suppliers in the position where they have to implement the technology without proper knowledge about it. Additionally, there are still several technical as well as rather political barriers to be solved. This seminar paper deals with RFID technology introduction and impacts on supply chain management systems in order to give an insight into the current issues and status of the technology.

Book RFID for the Supply Chain and Operations Professional

Download or read book RFID for the Supply Chain and Operations Professional written by Pamela Zelbst and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality and effectiveness of decisions made within an organization and its supply chain depend upon the accuracy and timeliness of the information upon which they are based. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that can provide more accurate information in near real time and thus increase the quality and timeliness of decisions based on that information. RFID systems are currently in use in areas such as inventory management, process control, asset tracking and monitoring, and retail point of sale. Organizations which appropriately incorporate RFID into their operations and information management systems have increased their agility, effectiveness, and efficiency resulting in organizational growth and increased profitability. The appropriate utilization of RFID allows organizations to become more agile resulting in their ability to respond to customers more efficiently and effectively. Technology by itself does not result in improvements and RFID is no exception. RFID is not a solution for every problem. However, when coupled with other appropriate technologies to address an appropriate objective, RFID can offer a variety of benefits to businesses. The proper integration into the firm's competitive plans and processes, and the ability to leverage those technologies for competitive advantage results in increased performance for organizations. The intent of this book is to provide a sufficient discussion of RFID to enable readers with no prior knowledge to develop a basic understanding of the technology. The book discusses current applications and specific examples of RFID usage taken from a variety of industries. The appropriate coupling of RFID with other technologies such as GPS, ERP, and robotics is discussed as well as an overview of the RFID implementation process. This book will help readers develop an understanding of the capability of the technology to increase an organization's customer responsiveness.

Book Assessment of RFID Investment in the Military Logistics Systems Through The Cost of Ownership Model COO

Download or read book Assessment of RFID Investment in the Military Logistics Systems Through The Cost of Ownership Model COO written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an emerging technology that has been recently used in numerous business and public fields. Most military applications of RFID have focused on logistics systems. Since RFID investment requires high initial cost and its benefits are hard to see in the short term, it needs an appropriate investment decision model. The purpose of this research is to propose a Cost of Ownership (COO) model for RFID integration into the Military Logistics System (MLS). The study primarily focuses on the question, whether the cost of integrating and operating the Turkish Naval Logistics System (TNLS) with RFID is worth investing. The results of this study provide a strategic roadmap allowing decision makers to determine if the logistics system considered is a good candidate for RFID technology integration based on the comparison of the COOs of the current and the RFID integrated MLS. This study also enlightens possible cost parameters and their impacts on the total cost of RFID technology implementation in MLS.

Book RFID in Maritime Container Logistics

Download or read book RFID in Maritime Container Logistics written by Thomas Will and published by Josef Eul Verlag Gmbh. This book was released on 2011 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the globalization of supply chains, container logistics has been one of the emerging industry areas over the past years. The resulting growth of container handling volume causes the existing container terminals to meet their capacity limits and terminal operators to search for technologies for increasing the throughput of containers considering given terminal capacities. This work identifies RFID as an appropriate technology and provides an overview of its potential advantages in container logistics. The identified RFID-based information benefits are discussed with logistics experts and a subsequently accomplished two-stage Delphi study discovers that RFID in container logistics provides several benefits with varying degrees for each transport chain participant. Furthermore, the author analyzes all transshipment processes of a tri-modal transport chain and develops recommended actions in terms of accelerating and improving RFID-based process modifications. Subsequently, this work provides the results of a case study which measures the possible reduction of transshipment process times and discusses optimizations due to reduced labor requirements. Since the implementation of process modifications in a real-world container terminal is a difficult and costly venture, the author develops a physical miniature demonstrator to map the above presented improvements and illustrates the integration of RFID in maritime container logistics to give an understanding of this technology and its applicability to logistics practitioners. In summary, this work is an excellent contribution to the area of information technology and logistics. The book addresses researchers and students in the areas of business administration and computer science. In addition, managers and process owners in the fields of logistics and information technology can find valuable insights to make their businesses more efficient.
