Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors From Radio and Television Service: September 1958 In the past 1h years the number of milk cows on farms in the U. S. Has continued downward almost without a break. There are fewer now than a year ago in almost every region of the country although the change has not followed the same pattern all over the map. Our marketing experts say this downward trend stems from.need for big changes in marketing practices and the large amount of capital which many of those changes involve. But the specialists say the sharper drop in the past year came primarily as a result of the sharp increase in meat animal prices. They expect as prices for some classes of cattle decline seasonally prices will go down so dairymen will have less incentive to cull dairy herds as closely as they have in the past year. Forty riders pulled up at the kong corral after a two day trip down 70 miles of Route 66 Trail boss F. Jake Hess, a Hereford breeder of note, and other principals of the ride fo: show outfit took their turns on camera standing-up. Hess figured the ride a fair exchange for a chance to invite viewers to ride (horseless carriage-style) over to mclean, Texas, for the annual rodeo and horse show. Cotton John figured real cow boys, their horses and chuck wagon, provided the right elements for a good show. Everyone seemed right pleased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors From Radio and Television Service: February 1, 1957This week the program permitting emergency grazing of Soil Bank Acreage Reserve land in certain drought counties in ll western States was extended to the end of this month. At the same time, State Drought Committees were asked to survey their areas and.recommend whether to end the program before Feb. 28, at that time, or extend it beyond that date. If recommendations are made to continue the program in some parts of the drought region, and the need for such extension is shown to exist, the program will be extended. Soil Bank law prohibits grazing land under Acreage Reserve agreements except in emergency conditions. Forestry agencies report tree planting getting big push from the Soil Bank in other parts of the country. The song writer who wrote about the fifty thousand Indians and fifty million trees was way off on his trees. Within three or four years nurseries will be producing 1 billion trees a year for the Soil Bank alone. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rfd Letter to Radio Farm Directors From Radio and Television Service: June, 1959 That unique effort to eradicate screwworms by sterilizing male flies in the Southeast is now under double check. The idea was that millions of screwworm flies, rendered sterile by exposure to radioactive cobalt, and released over the area where this live stock pest attacked cattle, would mate with native female flies which in turn would produce only infertile eggs. In that way, the species would eventually be wiped out. But now three flies have turned up in the hundreds of traps set out by the checkers. The specialists suspect the mysterious captives of being native screwworm flies. They say that at this advanced stage of the eradication campaign, final success depends more than ever on how thoroughly livestock producers in the Southeast search for and report infestations. They are getting AG to 50 samples of larvae and eggs taken from cattle wounds each week, but that's not enough for a good sampling. They are urging more farmers and ranchers to report on suspected cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
