Book The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism written by Jonathan Yeager and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelicalism, a worldwide interdenominational movement within Protestant Christianity, is one of the most popular and diverse religious movements in the world today. Evangelicals maintain the belief that the essence of the Gospel consists of the doctrine of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus' atonement. Evangelicals can be found on every continent and among nearly all Christian denominations. The origin of this group of people has been traced to the turn of the eighteenth century, with roots in the Puritan and Pietist movements in England and Germany. The earliest evangelicals could be found among Anglicans, Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists, Moravians, and Presbyterians throughout North America, Britain, and Western Europe, and included some of the foremost names of the age, such as Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, and George Whitefield. Early evangelicals were abolitionists, historians, hymn writers, missionaries, philanthropists, poets, preachers, and theologians. They participated in the major cultural and intellectual currents of the day, and founded institutions of higher education not limited to Dartmouth College, Brown University, and Princeton University. The Oxford Handbook of Early Evangelicalism provides the most authoritative and comprehensive overview of the significant figures and religious communities associated with early evangelicalism within the contextual and cultural environment of the long eighteenth century, with essays written by the world's leading experts in the field of eighteenth-century studies.

Book Wesleyan Methodism a Revival of Apostolic Christianity

Download or read book Wesleyan Methodism a Revival of Apostolic Christianity written by Thomas Jackson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wesleyan Methodism a Revival of Apostolic Christianity: A Sermon, Preached by Appointment Before the Wesleyan Conference, on Monday, August 5, 1839, on Occasion of the Celebration of the Centenary of Wesleyan Methodism Bold and unwarrantable as some persons may deem the assumption, we claim for the Wesleyan ministry a character strikingly similar to that which we have just described as existing in the first age of the Christian church. From the beginning the Wesleyan ministry has been exercised by spiritual men. No principle has been held more sacred, and guarded with more sedulous and watchful care, than this, - That no man should be recognized as a guide in the way to heaven, unless he be walking in that way himself. Satisfactory evidence of a Scriptural conversion to God, of deep and sincere piety, and of a divine call, has ever been regarded as indispensable in a Methodist preacher. No respectability of connection, no literary acquirements, no force of natural genius and talent, could ever secure for a man ad. Book John Wesley s Conception and Use of Scripture

Download or read book John Wesley s Conception and Use of Scripture written by Bishop Scott J. Jones and published by Kingswood Books. This book was released on 1995-11-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite wide acceptance of the "Wesleyan quadrilateral", significant disagreements have arisen in both academic and church circles about the degree to which Scripture stood in a place of theological primacy for Wesley, or should do so for modern Methodists, and about the proper and appropriate methods of interpreting Scripture. In this important work, Scott J. Jones offers a full-scale investigation of John Wesley's conception and use of Scripture. The results of this careful and thorough investigation are sometimes surprising. Jones argues that for Wesley, religious authority is constituted not by a "quadrilateral", but by a fivefold but unitary locus comprising Scripture, reason, Christian antiquity, the Church of England, and experience. He shows that in actual practice Wesley's reliance on the entire Christian tradition - in particular of the early church and of the Church of England - is far heavier than his stated conception of Scripture would seem to allow, and that Wesley stresses the interdependence of the five dimensions of religious authority for Christian faith and practice.
