Book excerpt: Revisiting the Twentieth Century, as the title suggests, is a collection of the author's experiences from his childhood in St. Paul, Minnesota, to those of him and his family before their move to New Jersey from North Carolina in 1955. The story covers amusing anecdotes he experienced in his student years, in a variety of summer laboring jobs, his early days with 3M in St. Paul, his bachelor life in New York, the courtship of his wife, their life in the High Point, NC and his job as salesman and sales manager. These anecdotes illustrate what life was like during this period which was marked by two shooting world wars, a depression and the threat of nuclear destruction. Against this background of international tumult, a great transformation in lifestyle occurred in the United States. At the beginning of the story, no one in his neighborhood has a car or a radio. Even the telephone and the record player were of recent origin. Families or churches took care of relatives and the poor went to the poorhouse . The work week was sixty hours and payment for over-time was unheard of. Unions were fighting to improve the working man's lot in life, but were in their infancy. Neighborhood interdependency disappeared as the automobile shrunk distances and people achieved greater mobility. The change in lifestyle that occurred in this brief period seem somewhat unique in our history.

Book excerpt: This book follows the stories of forcefully displaced women and raises the question of whether we can still use the figuration of the nomadic subject in feminist theories and politics. This question is examined in the light of the ongoing global crises of mobility and severe border practices. In recounting their stories migrant and refugee women appear in the world as ‘who they are’ — unique and unrepeatable human beings —and not as ‘what they are’ —objectified ‘refugees’, ‘victims’ or ‘stateless subjects’. Women’s stories leave traces of their will to rewrite their exclusion from oppressive regimes, defend their choice of civil and patriarchal disobedience, grasp their passage, claim their right to have rights and affirm their determination for new beginnings. What emerges from the encounter between theoretical abstractions and women’s lived experiences is the need to decolonize feminist theories and make cartographies of mobility assemblages, wherein nomadism is a component of entangled relations and not a category or a figuration of a subject position. These stories that have now been collected, transcribed and analysed; they have created a rich archive of uprooted women’s experiences and have brought forward a wide range of new ideas that will be presented and discussed in the book: Decolonizing feminist theory Mobility assemblages and geographies of nomadism The art of listening to fragmented narratives and the labour of translation Crossing borders and inhabiting borderlands Radical solitude and radical hope Feminist genealogies of labour under conditions of forced displacement The force of political narratives through the figure of Antigone? Book excerpt: This book takes issue with the likening of contemporary globalization to nineteenth century trade interdependence, in which the defining feature of contemporary globalization is the spread of global production networks, which were notably absent in the past. Maswood demonstrates that the emergence of global production networks (GPNs) was not a result of economic and trade liberalization, but instead due to neo-protectionist developments in the 1980s that acted as a catalyst to transform Japan’s nationally based production networks into the now ubiquitous GPNs. Through this case study of Japan, the author lays out a case for reconsidering the origins of globalization, and explores some of the consequences that are likely to flow from progressive evolutionary transition towards a global economy.
