Book excerpt: This planning bulletin presents the goals and priorities that the New York State University Regents consider to be the major statewide concerns for post-secondary education in the years ahead, and it is intended to be a guide for the development of the 1972 master plan by the State's institutions of higher education. Part I of the bulletin sets forth a statement of purpose and goals for higher education into the 1980's. The goals include: (1) equalization of educational opportunities; (2) the creation of a comprehensive system of higher education; (3) excellence in the pursuit of knowledge; (4) meeting the educational needs of society; and (5) having a system that is responsive to community needs. Part II identifies and describes priority concerns as seen by the Regents; these include: the provision of higher education for all age groups; open admissions; a relevant curriculum; effective teacher education; the economics and financing of higher education; financial aid to students; mobility in the educational continuum; governance; and the development of complementary institutional relationships. Part III explains the statewide planning process. The bulletin concludes with a bibliography of materials concerning the current status and role of higher education in society.

Book Holocaust Escapees and Global Development

Download or read book Holocaust Escapees and Global Development written by David Simon and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousands uprooted and displaced by the Holocaust had a profound cultural impact on the countries in which they sought refuge, with numerous Holocaust escapees attaining prominence as scientists, writers, filmmakers and artists. But what is less well known is the way in which this refugee diaspora shaped the scholarly culture of their new-found homes and international policy. In this unique work, David Simon explores the pioneering role played by mostly Jewish refugee scholars in the creation of development studies and practice following the Second World War, and what we can learn about the discipline by examining the social and intellectual history of its early practitioners. Through in-depth interviews with key figures and their relatives, Simon considers how the escapees' experiences impacted their scholarship, showing how they played a key role in shaping their belief that ‘development’ really did hold the potential to make a better world, free from the horrors of war, genocide and discrimination they had experienced under Nazi rule. In the process, he casts valuable new light on the origins and evolution of development studies, policy and practice from this formative postwar period to the present.

  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Design First written by David Walters and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-grounded in the history and theory of Anglo-American urbanism, this illustrated textbook sets out objectives, policies and design principles for planning new communities and redeveloping existing urban neighborhoods. Drawing from their extensive experience, the authors explain how better plans (and consequently better places) can be created by applying the three-dimensional principles of urban design and physical place-making to planning problems. Design First uses case studies from the authors’ own professional projects to demonstrate how theory can be turned into effective practice, using concepts of traditional urban form to resolve contemporary planning and design issues in American communities. The book is aimed at architects, planners, developers, planning commissioners, elected officials and citizens -- and, importantly, students of architecture and planning -- with the objective of reintegrating three-dimensional design firmly back into planning practice.

Book The Image of the City

Download or read book The Image of the City written by Kevin Lynch and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1964-06-15 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic work on the evaluation of city form. What does the city's form actually mean to the people who live there? What can the city planner do to make the city's image more vivid and memorable to the city dweller? To answer these questions, Mr. Lynch, supported by studies of Los Angeles, Boston, and Jersey City, formulates a new criterion—imageability—and shows its potential value as a guide for the building and rebuilding of cities. The wide scope of this study leads to an original and vital method for the evaluation of city form. The architect, the planner, and certainly the city dweller will all want to read this book.
