Book Development of an Overlay Design Procedure for Composite Pavements

Download or read book Development of an Overlay Design Procedure for Composite Pavements written by Liangbo Hu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composite overlay design procedure currently used by ODOT sometimes produces very large overlay thicknesses that are deemed structurally unnecessary, especially for composite pavements already with thick asphalt overlays. This study was initiated to investigate the cause(s) and to develop a revised procedure. The current ODOT pavement overlay thickness design procedure is based on the structural deficiency approach recommended by the 1993 AASHTO Pavement Design Guide. The current procedure uses a simple, closed form procedure to back-calculate the subgrade modulus and the effective modulus of the existing pavement structure from the measured Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) surface deflections. The simplistic treatment of the AC and PCC layers as a combined layer in the back-calculation model was found to significantly underestimate the moduli of the existing pavement. A three-layer elastic model is adopted in lieu of the two-layer model used in the current procedure for back-calculation. The three-layer model allows the composite pavement structure to be modeled more accurately. The elastic moduli of the asphalt concrete layer and the underlying Portland cement concrete can both be back-calculated, instead of being combined as one. A revised overlay design procedure has been developed. A comparison of the revised procedure and the current procedure shows that the three-layer model produces higher effective thickness than the two-layer model for the same pavement structure. Therefore, the required overlay thickness is reduced. The revised design software has been implemented into a design software program, which also offers an optional feature that takes into consideration the temperature effects on the asphalt concrete moduli.

Book Evaluation of the AASHTO Design Equations and Recommended Improvements

Download or read book Evaluation of the AASHTO Design Equations and Recommended Improvements written by Jerome F. Daleiden and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1994 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the primary objectives of the Strategic Highway Research Program Long Term Pavement Performance (SHRP-LTPP) studies is to improve the ability of highway engineers to design new and overlaid pavement structures. The specific analyses discussed in this report were aimed at evaluation of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) pavement design equations (for both new and overlaid pavements). Initial analyses confirm that although improvements have been made to the AASHTO design equations over the years, the equations still do not fully explain data from North American pavements. Recommendations for the improvement of the design equations are provided; however, the highway community at large supports replacing the limited equations with a comprehensive design system that considers all distress types.

Book Guidelines for Rehabilitation of Asphalt overlaid Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Guidelines for Rehabilitation of Asphalt overlaid Concrete Pavements written by Kathleen Theresa Hall and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents guidelines for selection of rehabilitation strategies for asphalt-overlaid concrete (AC/PCC) pavements, summarizes the performance of second AC overlays of AC/PCC pavements on Illinois Interstates, and presents procedures for design of three types of overlays of AC/PCC pavements: second AC overlay; unbonded PCC overlay; and AC overlay of rubblized PCC with the existing AC removed. The overlay design procedures are based on the 1993 revised AASHTO overlay design procedures, customized for Illinois conditions. A practical catalog of rehabilitation designs is presented for AC/PCC pavements in various categories of condition, traffic level, and PCC pavement type.

Book Asphalt Overlay Design Procedures

Download or read book Asphalt Overlay Design Procedures written by Fred N. Finn and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1984 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers and others concerned with the design of asphalt concrete overlays. Information is presented on reasons for overlaying a pavement and on the vaious methods available for design of an asphalt overlay. A pavement overlay may be required because of inadequate ride quality, excessive pavement distress, reduced friction between tire and pavement, high user costs, or inadequate structural capacity for planned use. This report of the Transportation Research Boad discusses the current methods used for designing asphalt concrete overlays with emphasis on deflection-based and analytical procedures.

Book Overlay Design and Reflection Cracking Analysis for Rigid Pavements

Download or read book Overlay Design and Reflection Cracking Analysis for Rigid Pavements written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue cracking and reflection cracking criteria were developed and incorporated into a design procedure for flexible and rigid overlays of rigid pavements. Linear elastic layered theory is the basic model used to compute stresses and strains in the pavement system, which are then input to the fatigue and reflection cracking models. The fatigue criteria developments resulted from analyses of the performance of rigid pavements at the AASHO Road Test.
