Book A Handbook on the Ecowas Treaty and Financial Institutions

Download or read book A Handbook on the Ecowas Treaty and Financial Institutions written by Maiyaki and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration to write on the ECOWAS Treaty and the role of financial institutions derived from the apparent and unabated efforts of the various governments in the West African subregion to find solutions to the inexplicable sufferings and underdevelopment of the region and its people in the face of abundant but untapped human and natural resources. The strategy of integration has been employed by other jurisdictions, some of them more developed, as an option in addressing the forgoing challenges. So many years after the establishment of ECOWAS, the dream is far from being attained. Given the critical financial engagements inherent in the ECOWAS integration strategy, it is considered desirable that the treaty is rationalized to accommodate a wider role for financial institutions within the control of a supra national framework.

Book ECOWAS Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerry Ukaigwe
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-02-05
  • ISBN : 3319262335
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book ECOWAS Law written by Jerry Ukaigwe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the emerging jurisprudence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and seamlessly knits together all the disparate texts, policies and judicial decisions into a single, coherent resource. The work is deliberately crafted to address the lack of a comprehensive resource on the subject, and guide lawyers, policy-makers, Community citizens, researchers, students and civil society organisations through the labyrinth of the Community's laws and policies. From a socio-legal perspective, it unearths political, socio-economic and legal structures that impinge on the integration cause on the one hand, and dilute the efficacy of the Community legal regime on the other hand. Also, it exposes contemporary terrorism and conflict in West Africa and the legal interventions that the Community has adopted to respond to these challenges. In sequence, it traces and expounds the legal development of the Community norms with respect to sources of law, human rights, supra-nationalism and laws of the member states, reference procedure, action for damages, freedom of movement, discrimination and competition policy. The book particularly evaluates the extent of the human rights jurisdiction of the Community Court of Justice, as well as jurisdictional limitations to the protection of Community rights either at national or Community level. Also, it sheds light on the jurisdictional chasm existing between Community law and member states' national laws, and offers proven constitutional, legislative and judicial solutions to plug the gap. It explains vividly the common market, free movement of goods and the impact of Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on the entire ECOWAS free trade policy. In all these analyses, evaluation and examination of norms and policies, the work draws on the European Union's rich case law on similar points to explain recondite issues of law which may arise or have arisen from the application of any of the ECOWAS texts.

Book ECOWAS Monetary Union Agenda and Regional Integration Policies

Download or read book ECOWAS Monetary Union Agenda and Regional Integration Policies written by Toluwani Ajayi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of Regional integration can be traceable to the evolvement of the international trade relations in the post-war period, linked regionalism, while regionalism itself can be understood through two different historical perspectives. The first occurred in 1951 and1957 with European Coal and Steel Community (1951) and the second with European Economic Community. This two served as forerunners of the European Union. Thus, in the developing world, especially in Latin America and Africa, there was adoption of import-substituting regional integration as the means to effect inward-looking growth. Most of the developing country schemes initiated at this time eventually became moribund or even collapsed, while the growing momentum of multilateral liberalization in the 1970s and 1980s contributed to the decline in the importance attached to regionalism, while the second is traceable to the second half of the 1980s. Thus, under the impetus of the European cooperation, the 1960s wave of regionalism reached Africa with the founding of the Central African Customs Union in 1964, Latin America via the Central American Common Market in 1960 and the Andean Pact in 1969. In Asia, ASEAN was launched in 1967. However, the idea of regional integration in West Africa (even though accompanied with some form of politics) is aimed at bringing economic unity in trade, commerce and development. It is also aimed at limiting or even eliminating all trade barriers in the region and promoting socio-economic development of member states. ECOWAS as a sub-regional organisation was launched through the Treaty of Lagos in 1975, with the primary goals of promoting regional trade, economic cooperation and self-reliance in the sub-region. To accelerate integration, a revised ECOWAS Treaty was signed in 1993. Its aspirations are basically channelled towards a common market and a single currency among member states. This essay tend look at ECOWAS regional integration and single currency agenda and assess its successes, and supervision, challenges and applicable theories for continued achievement.

Book Legal Aspects of Economic Integration in Africa

Download or read book Legal Aspects of Economic Integration in Africa written by Richard Frimpong Oppong and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Frimpong Oppong challenges the view that effective economic integration in Africa is hindered by purely socio-economic, political and infrastructural problems. Inspired by the comparative experiences of other regional economic communities and imbued with insights from constitutional, public and private international law, he argues that even if the socio-economic, political and infrastructural challenges were to disappear, the state of existing laws would hinder any progress. Using a relational framework as the fulcrum of analyses, he demonstrates that in Africa's economic integration processes, community-state, inter-state and inter-community legal relations have neither been carefully thought through nor situated on a solid legal framework, and that attempts made to provide legal framework have been incomplete and, sometimes, grounded on questionable assumptions. To overcome these problems and aid the economic integration agenda that is essential for Africa's long-term economic growth and development, the author proposes radical reforms to community and national laws.

Book Regional Approaches to the Responsibility to Protect

Download or read book Regional Approaches to the Responsibility to Protect written by Jochem Rietveld and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies regional approaches to the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in Europe and West Africa. The work assesses how and to what extent the European Union (EU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have internalised the norm, both generally, in institutions, policies, and programs and specifically, in crisis situations of R2P concern, such as the 2011 Libyan crisis and 2012 Malian crisis. It provides a historical analysis of how the two regional organisations have dealt with questions of sovereignty, security, and human rights since their founding, as well as an analysis of some of the European and West African roots of the R2P norm. This reflects the notion that global norms are often informed by local and regional practices and that this needs to be recognised in order to fully understand regional responses to alleged global norms. The book uses process tracing to trace the regional internalisation of R2P and has benefited from qualitative research interviews with EU- and ECOWAS-stakeholders. One of the key findings is that ECOWAS and West Africa have delivered a key contribution to the norm construction of R2P, a finding insufficiently recognised in the current literature. This book will be of much interest to students of the Responsibility to Protect, EU human rights and foreign policy, African politics, security studies, and International Relations in general.

Book Informal cross border trade in Africa How much Why And what impact

Download or read book Informal cross border trade in Africa How much Why And what impact written by Bouet, Antoine and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal cross-border trade (ICBT) represents a prominent phenomenon in Africa. Several studies suggest that for certain products and countries, the value of informal trade may meet or even exceed the value of formal trade. This paper provides a review of existing efforts to measure informal trade. We list 18 initiatives aimed at measuring ICBT in Africa. The paper also summarizes discussions conducted with many stakeholders in Africa between December 2016 and May 2018 regarding the measurement, the determinants, and the implications of ICBT. The methodologies used to measure ICBT in Africa differ widely, but they do confirm that informal trade in Africa is both sizeable and volatile. Both evidence on the determinants of ICBT and discussions with stakeholders suggest that policies should aim to reduce the existing costs associated with formal trade and provide positive incentives for traders and producers to move into the formal economy in order to avoid the loss of economic potential stemming from informal trade.
