Book Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems

Download or read book Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems written by Daniel Tröhler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As contemporary education becomes increasingly tied to global economic power, national school systems attempting to influence one another inevitably confront significant tensions caused by differences in heritage, politics, and formal structures. Trajectories in the Development of Modern School Systems provides a comprehensive theoretical and empirical critique of the reform movements that seek to homogenize schooling around the world. Informed by historical and sociological insight into a variety of nations and eras, these in-depth case studies reveal how and why sweeping, convergent reform agendas clash with specific institutional policies, practices, and curricula. Countering current theoretical models which fail to address the potential pressures born from these challenging isomorphic developments, this book illuminates the cultural idiosyncrasies that both produce and problematize global reform efforts and offers a new way of understanding curriculum as a manifestation of national identity.

Book New Priorities for Teacher Training and School Curriculum

Download or read book New Priorities for Teacher Training and School Curriculum written by Douglas Brown and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08-12 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its origins in 1948 when I realized just how profoundly unprepared I was to teach the underachieving students for whom I was responsible. I knew I was only going through the motions. Consequently I developed an interest in pedagogy,* and particularly in testing the effectiveness of its precepts in the classroom. My Putting Minds to Work, Brown (1972), was an attempt to describe the components of a pedagogy that would help teachers be better prepared. Its underlying theme was the need for greater teacher sophistication in communication. However, a comment by Resnik (1987) on the hiatus in pedagogy between motivation and cognition, led me to realize the potential of communication to bridge that gap. More recently I realized that the New Taxonomy of Marzano and Kendall (2007) enabled me to resolve a problem I had with the Bloom (1956) definition of intellectual ability that appeared so incompatible with current understanding of information processing. Explication of the interrelationships of communication, motivation, and cognition uncovered principles and practices of special significance for the teaching of students who are on the path of underachievement. I realized the insights gained from that perspective had general application, i.e., to all students.

Book Perspectives in Curriculum Studies

Download or read book Perspectives in Curriculum Studies written by A Zama and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-08-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Curriculum Studies by Margaret Nalova Endeley and Martha Ashuntantang Zama is a comprehensive textbook for graduate students of Curriculum Studies and Instruction, and a guide for education practitioners wherein they articulate contemporary curriculum concepts, principles and applications in the field. With illustrations from informed African perspectives, the authors situate curriculum theory and practice in local contexts so that African scholars, educators, and others may be equipped with knowledge and skills to develop and maintain appropriate and relevant curricula for quality education. Framed in sixteen chapters, grouped in five parts, the text begins with the exposition of basic terminology, curriculum theory and foundations of the curriculum before delving profoundly into the curriculum development process. The latter portion gives the reader the opportunity to explore, analyse and evaluate different curriculum planning approaches and models, curriculum design dimensions and patterns, and procedures for the development of syllabuses, textbooks, and other curriculum materials. Also, Curriculum implementation tasks as well as strategies for evaluation of programs and courses are presented and discussed. Since curriculum and instruction are highly intertwined notions, instructional design is elaborately treated in two chapters bringing out its theoretical underpinnings and procedures. The book closes with global perspectives of curriculum development in practice. The goal here is to provide insights into trends, issues, and challenges not only in curriculum development but also in the curriculum field, which should generate action towards the improvement of curriculum practice and spur the search for new knowledge.
