Book excerpt: Visual forms of instruction are increasingly used as a result of the broader availability of technologies such as broadcasts, teleconferencing, videotapes, videodiscs, and emerging multimedia combinations of computer and digital audio-video technologies. A considerable amount of research stretches back to early work with film, television, and static visual materials that can be of benefit in developing these new forms of instruction. It is important for new work to profit from this accumulated research on the effectiveness and practical benefits of instruction with video and film. Accordingly, a review of this literature will benefit researchers and developers of instruction that use existing and new video technologies. The widespread and growing use of video and video-based media in instruction is based on a perception of television and similar dynamic visual media as having unique and positive attributes. This comprehensive review of the research literature regarding the use and effectiveness of video-based media attempts to summarize the current state of knowledge in this important area. Focusing on empirical findings, the authors have attempted to pull together several threads of research into a single work including works in educational and cognitive psychology, and communication and media research. As such, this book examines the research literature regarding the use of dynamic video media in instruction, including: * general reviews of the effectiveness, acceptance, and costs of several forms of educational television; * teaching techniques used effectively with video media; * the combining of visual and verbal information; * the effects of motion, animation, and interactivity; * the relationship between media perceptions and learning; * the effect of various video production techniques on learning; and * critical perspectives on learning from media.

Although it was revealed that video-based lessons as one of the instructional tools is rated as very effective by teachers, there are problems encountered in the utilization of them for pupils amidst the pandemic. These include lack of knowledge on how to utilize video-based lessons as a classroom tool, lack of instructional materials such as laptops and cellphones, that can be used in accessing the video-based information, difficulty in creating video-based lessons due to poor internet connections, short attention span among learners and big expenses on the part of pupils, especially during a pandemic, where not all pupils can afford to buy phones. The study successfully surfaced some teachers’ solutions to resolve the problems in the utilization of video-based lessons as instructional learning materials, such as asking for assistance from an ICT Coordinator or well-trained teachers on how to learn to create and use video-based materials for teaching purposes, knowing the needs of learners. Also, watching YouTube videos to gain different ideas on how to create interactive, short video-based lessons to address pupils who have a short attention span while watching lessons and attending online training, relative to the development and utilization of video-based lessons to equip them with the skills in teaching classes in modern ways. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in the study. The respondents of the study were fifteen elementary teachers. A purposive sampling technique was utilized. Interviews, Survey Questionnaire, Participant Observation, and Focus Group Discussion were the methods employed.

Research reviewed in this report is limited to studies carried out in public school settings or that deal with issues of concern in public education. An introduction discusses the changing definition of instructional technology. More than half of the review is devoted to summarizing conclusions and discussing the history, directions, and limitations of research on educational media. The review emphasizes comparative media studies, focusing on motion pictures, television, still pictures, audio materials, programmed and computer-assisted instruction, multimedia instruction, and problems with comparative media studies. The economic evaluation of educational media and research on media attributes are also reviewed. Research on school media centers is divided into several topics for discussion: descriptive research, experimental research, media staffing studies, national standards for media programs, planning and evaluation of programs, and needed research.
