Book excerpt: Harlan County Dam, on the Republican River, is a rolled-earth fill structure with a maximum height of about 100 ft above the valley floor. It is 10,477 ft long along the crest and contains about 13.5 million cu yd of earth fill. A gravity-type concrete structure 1351 ft long, located on the left (north) riverbank, contains a controlled-flow spillway and outlet facilities for flood control and irrigation. The spillway is 720 ft long and has a maximum discharge capacity of 457,000 cfs with the reservoir at maximum, surcharge elevation of 1974.6 msl. Maximum irrigation and surcharge pool elevations will create net heads of 60 and 90 ft, respectively, above the flood-plain floor. This study is one of a series of similar studies of the foundation and soil mechanics features of earth dams recently constructed by the Corps of Engineers. In these studies original design data are reviewed, construction experience is summarized, and performance of the completed structures is compared with design predictions to provide information for use in the design and construction of future similar projects.

Book excerpt: Wister Dam is a rolled-earth-fill structure, comprising a 5700-ft-long main embankment, a spillway and outlet works, and a 2400-ft-long dike. The main embankment has a maximum height of 97.5 ft above the stream bed, and the dike has a maximum height of 40 ft above natural ground. Over-all, the main embankment and dike contain about 2,500,000 cu yd of fill. The report is concerned principally with the main embankment since the spillway and outlet works are founded on firm rock, and the dike did not present any design or construction problems of interest. Investigations made for design of the main embankment and data obtained are described, the design analysis is reviewed, construction procedures and field observations made during and after construction are summarized, and comparisons are made of design predictions and performance data.

Book excerpt: Tom Jenkins Reservoir Project is an unzoned, rolled-earth fill structure about 75 ft high, 944 ft long, containing about half million cubic yards of earth fill. The fill was placed in alternating wet and dry alyers. Details considered and values used in design are reviewed as well as construction procedures, and results of field control tests and tests on record samples are given. Observations of performance made during and after construction are also presented. No study was made of the foundations for the spillway and outlet works since they are founded on firm rock.
