Download or read book Handbook of Offshore Helicopter Transport Safety written by Michael J. Taber and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Offshore Helicopter Transport Safety: Essentials of Underwater Egress and Survival provides a comprehensive look at the issues and concerns facing offshore helicopter transport. The book offers guidance for offshore helicopter operators, survival instructors, and the global offshore workforce, including discussions of safety management systems, safety briefings, survival equipment, underwater egress training, water impact/ditching statistics, and search and rescue. Each area of interest details pertinent information spanning approximately 30 years of offshore operations. Early sections discuss helicopter transport safety, safety regulations, and standards, while subsequent chapters cover Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) programs and their development and training, followed by final chapters on the effects of HUET, Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS), and Helicopter Transportation Suit (HTS). Presents Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET), requirements for physical fidelity, contextual interference, and retention of skills Details the current understanding of breath-holding and cardiac response in cold environments Discusses stress, executive functioning, and performance in extreme situations Covers current standards of emergency breathing systems and next to skin clothing following egress from a ditched helicopter in cold water Includes the most up-to-date water impact/ditching statistics with a focus on human tolerances and survivability

This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full, independent, public inquiry must be convened to address whether commercial pressure from oil and gas companies affects the safety of offshore helicopter operations. This inquiry must also examine the role of the Civil Aviation Authority. MPs highlight how the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) investigation into the Sumburgh crash uncovered a number of serious issues. In particular, AAIB found pre-flight safety briefing did not accurately explain how to use the type of Emergency Breathing System (EBS) supplied on the helicopter. The Committee also concludes: (i) Regulatory inertia at the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is exposing offshore workers to unnecessary risk by slowing down the implementation of safety improvements; (ii) There is no conclusive evidence that Super Puma variant helicopters (which make up some 60% of the UK offshore helicopter fleet) are less safe than other helicopters; (iii) The CAA review of the Sumburgh crash found that since 2008 more incidents were reported in Norway than in the UK despite the Norwegian fleet being smaller; (iv) The Government must push the European Aviation Safety Agency to implement changes recommended by the AAIB more rapidly. In addition, the Committee urges (i) AAIB to keep crash survivors better informed on the progress of investigations in future; (ii) CAA to meet survivors to hear their experiences and to consider their suggestions for safety improvements.

Book Paying for the Piper

Download or read book Paying for the Piper written by Charles Woolfson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an appraisal of current offshore industrial relations, and safety regulations instituted after the 1988 Alpha disaster in the North Sea. This text discusses the oil industry's attempts to contain subsequent, unwelcome regulatory interference, and examines the fraught history of trade unionism in the offshore industry, the conflict over health and safety, and the sometimes brutal struggle over union rights as the workforce attempted to achieve a collective voice in the reshaping of the safety and production environment. The authors conclude that, as yet, offshore safety has been little, or not at all, improved.

Book Current Aeromedical Issues in Rotary Wing Operations

Download or read book Current Aeromedical Issues in Rotary Wing Operations written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given its characteristics and the complexity of its use and its environment, the helicopter is exposed to damage and a whole series of measures can be previewed to alientate this risk. The presentations concentrated on five main topics: 1. Crew training; 2. The different conditions of use; 3. The psycho-physiological component; 4. Survival equipment and methods; and 5. Accidents and their prevention. A careful reading of the papers presented at the symposium will enable both specialists and decision-makers to make a summary assessment of the constraints of the missions on the one hand, and on the other, of the new methods of protection and training and the new technologies which will enable aircrew to carry out their missions in a safer environment. In addition, they will perhaps discover that helicopter operation can be optimised by a series of different devices and above all by judicious matching of "type of helicopter-type of aircrew training-type of additional on-board equipment".
