Book Waste Cleanup

Download or read book Waste Cleanup written by Bill Swick and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002-02 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dept. of Energy (DoE) spends $6-$7 billion annually to store, clean up, & monitor nuclear & hazardous waste at its sites around the country. This waste is primarily a result of more than 50 years of producing material for the nation's nuclear weapons program. Over the years, much of the cleanup activity has been implemented under compliance agreements (CA) between DoE & other agencies. This report examines: What are the major types of CA?; What progress is DoE making in complying with milestones specified in the CA?; To what extent is the cost to comply with these CA reflected in the DoE budget? & To what extent do these CA allow DoE to prioritize work across sites according to the relative risk posed by the various wastes?

Book Nuclear Waste

Download or read book Nuclear Waste written by Gene Aloise and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dept. of Energy¿s Office of Environ. Mgmt. (EM) is responsible for one of the world¿s largest cleanup programs: treatment and disposal of radioactive and hazardous waste created as a by-product of nuclear weapons production and energy research at sites across the country, such as EM¿s Hanford Site in Wash. State and the Savannah River Site in S. Carolina. Computer models (CM) -- which represent physical and bio-geochemical processes as math formulas -- are one tool EM uses in the cleanups. This report: (1) describes how EM uses CM in cleanup decisions; (2) evaluates how EM ensures the quality of its CM; and (3) assesses EM¿s overall strategy for managing its CM. This is a print on demand report.

Book Improving the Regulation and Management of Low Activity Radioactive Wastes

Download or read book Improving the Regulation and Management of Low Activity Radioactive Wastes written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest volumes of radioactive wastes in the United States contain only small amounts of radioactive material. These low-activity wastes (LAW) come from hospitals, utilities, research institutions, and defense installations where nuclear material is used. Millions of cubic feet of LAW also arise every year from non-nuclear enterprises such as mining and water treatment. While LAW present much less of a radiation hazard than spent nuclear fuel or high-level radioactive wastes, they can cause health risks if controlled improperly. Improving the Regulation and Management of Low-Activity Radioactive Wastes asserts that LAW should be regulated and managed according to the degree of risk they pose for treatment, storage, and disposal. Current regulations are based primarily on the type of industry that produced the waste-the waste's origin-rather than its risk. In this report, a risk-informed approach for regulating and managing all types of LAW in the United States is proposed. Implemented in a gradual or stepwise fashion, this approach combines scientific risk assessment with public values and perceptions. It focuses on the hazardous properties of the waste in question and how they compare with other waste materials. The approach is based on established principles for risk-informed decision making, current risk-informed initiatives by waste regulators in the United States and abroad, solutions available under current regulatory authorities, and remedies through new legislation when necessary.

Book Technologies for Environmental Management

Download or read book Technologies for Environmental Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-01-15 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Energy's Environmental Management Program (DOEEM) is one of the largest environmental clean up efforts in world history. The EM division charged with developing or finding technologies to accomplish this massive task, its Office of Science and Technology (OST), has been reviewed extensively, including six reports from committees of the National Research Council's (NRC's) Board on Radioactive Waste Management (BRWM) that have been released since December 1998. These committees examined different components of OST's technology development program, including its decision-making and peer review processes and its efforts to develop technologies in the areas of decontamination and decommissioning, waste forms for mixed waste, tank waste, and subsurface contamination. Gerald Boyd, head of OST, asked the Board on Radioactive Waste Management (BRWM) to summarize the major findings and recommendations of the six reports and synthesize any common issues into a number of overarching recommendations.

Book The Need for Mixed Waste Treatment Options Within the US Department of Energy

Download or read book The Need for Mixed Waste Treatment Options Within the US Department of Energy written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has generated and stored significant amounts of low-level mixed wastes consisting of radioactive materials mixed with hazardous chemical substances in various forms. The DOE is in the process of beginning a cleanup of these mixed wastes at many of its facilities. Many of these waste streams had been previously disposed of by methods acceptable at the time but with the passage of very stringent laws affecting migration of hazardous components, now the disposal areas constitute remediation sites. Disposal of low level radioactive waste potentially containing hazardous materials have also fallen under land disposal restrictions and currently no mixed waste is going to low level disposal facilities. The paper will address why the DOE is just now starting to comply with environmental laws, why there is a need to find more effective and less expensive means of cleaning up wastes, how the DOE is organizing to accomplish this cleanup, and several plasma technology development efforts in the DOE Complex that show promise of meeting these needs.
