Book Better data collection in shark fisheries Learning from practice

Download or read book Better data collection in shark fisheries Learning from practice written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some species and stocks of sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras (termed shark in this review) are rapidly depleting due to climate change, land-based influences, and overfishing. These pressures, coupled with sharks’ low reproductive potential (slow growth and delayed maturation; long reproductive cycles; low fecundity; and long lifespans) place sharks in a risk profile that is more akin to mammals on land than fish in the ocean. The development of policy, and the delivery of management and conservation measures regulating the use, international trade, and capture of sharks (whether as a targeted species or as bycatch in fisheries), is hindered by gaps in basic knowledge – a knowledge that is required in order to get a clear sense of their status in real-time. Many countries are establishing or strengthening monitoring across shark value chains to overcome these shortfalls in information. This document reviews what shark fisheries data is being collected, highlighting the opportunities and constraints in collecting information on sharks in fisheries, based on practical experience. It includes information from 28 surveys across 19 countries: 9 in the Mediterranean, 5 in Africa, 3 in Asia, and 1 in Oceania. Interviews were conducted with data collectors and managers across the entirety of the survey process, while data collection variables were documented in order to inform those interested in the collection, provision, and exchange of shark information on common practices and their commonalities. The review identifies standardized information metrics which, if collected more generally, would strengthen the opportunity for harmonized reporting and cross-comparability across surveys. In addition – and in order to assess the status quo – the current data collection requirements of management measures applied to sharks by regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) were reviewed, including “no retention” measures. Finally, the review proposes a list of the minimum standard measurements and common life-history parameters required to support the assessment of shark stocks in fisheries.

Book Developing a Data poor Stock Assessment Model for New Zealand Bycatch Species

Download or read book Developing a Data poor Stock Assessment Model for New Zealand Bycatch Species written by Callum Templeton and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated methods pertaining to the assessment of data-poor fishery stocks within New Zealand. Recent modelling approaches (termed ‘N-mixture’) have appeared in the ecological literature that enable simultaneous estimation of abundance and detectability (gear efficiency in a fisheries context) from count data corresponding to a population of interest. This approach forms part of the quantitative risk assessment framework known as Sustainability Assessment for Fishing Effects, which has been applied to a range of species in Australian fisheries. There is potential for application of such methods in New Zealand, where an estimated 80% of fish stocks lack assessment under the Quota Management System. Various models were developed as part of this study in order to obtain quantitative estimates relating to catchability and abundance. These involved a mixture of statistical distributions (log-normal, Poisson, and binomial) and were implemented in the R and JAGS software. A range of simulations were devised to produce artificial data sets for model validation and analysis purposes. Models were analysed using a Bayesian hierarchical approach in order to estimate the parameters of interest. The models under investigation were also applied to red gurnard (Chelidonichthys kumu) data from the GUR 1 stock management area in northeastern New Zealand, to provide a case study for real-world applicability. Model validation revealed that recovering estimates of gear efficiency and abundance was possible using the approach considered here. Analysis simulations provided information regarding the potential sources of bias, variability and incompatibility arising from assumptions in model specification and data generation. These findings were also considered in the context of application to red gurnard. The most important issues highlighted by this study include the role of over-dispersion on modelling and data requirements, handling zeroinflated data sets, and bias introduced from catch reporting procedures in commercial fisheries within New Zealand. The results of this study provide an important first step in assessing data-poor stocks, providing a cost-effective means of obtaining key fishing parameters without significant data requirements. Further research into this area will enable these findings to be applied alongside other methods in order to gauge the sustainability of fishing impacts on bycatch species.

Book Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture

Download or read book Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture written by Bruce F. Phillips and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 1048 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of the current and future effects of climate change on the world’s fisheries and aquaculture operations The first book of its kind, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture explores the impacts of climate change on global fisheries resources and on marine aquaculture. It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.

Book Management Science in Fisheries

Download or read book Management Science in Fisheries written by Charles T.T. Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key goal of fisheries management is to regulate extractive pressure on a resource so as to ensure social, economic and ecological sustainability. This text provides an accessible entry point for students and professionals to management science as developed in fisheries, in order to facilitate uptake of the latest ideas and methods. Traditional management approaches have relied upon a stock assessment based on existing understanding of resource status and dynamics, and a prediction of the likely future response to a static management proposal. However all such predictions include an inherent degree of uncertainty, and the last few decades have seen the emergence of an adaptive approach that uses feedback control to account for unknown future behaviour. Feedback is achieved via a control rule, which defines a relationship between perceived status of the resource and a management action. Evaluations of such rules usually include computer simulation testing across a broad range of uncertainties, so that an appropriate and robust rule can be selected by stakeholders and managers. The book focuses on this approach, which is usually referred to as Management Strategy Evaluation. The book is enriched by case study examples from different parts of the world, as well as insights into the theory and practice from those actively involved in the science of fisheries management.

Book Global review of orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus their fisheries biology and management

Download or read book Global review of orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus their fisheries biology and management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report covers historical aspects of the regional development of orange roughy fisheries, biology, stock assessment, ecosystem interactions, and key management issues. In light of debate regarding the sustainability of orange roughy fisheries, as well as fisheries for other long-lived deepwater species, this review describes how, by making the right choices and employing the best science available, there are now some demonstrably sustainable orange roughy fisheries. However, there remain considerable challenges. These include improving understanding of deepwater benthic communities in general, their genetics and population distributions, their dispersal, and their ability to recover from fishery-related and other impacts. With regard to the direct management of the fisheries, the report emphasizes important opportunities and needs to improve ageing and acoustic biomass estimation, and to better understand the genetics and population structure of the stocks of orange roughy that are fished and managed.
