Book Mastitis control

Download or read book Mastitis control written by T.J.G.M. Lam and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastitis is one of the main health issues in dairy production. The losses are not only economic, but also issues such as animal health and welfare, milk quality, antibiotic usage and the image of the dairy sector are important reasons to focus on mastitis control. Accordingly, mastitis is a topic that is well-studied worldwide. Although the scope of the studies may vary from the smallest unit, the gene, to the largest unit, a whole country, the final goal is to control mastitis more effectively. Effective mastitis control is based on knowledge from a wide range of fields, like infectious pressure, milking procedures, resistance, detection, diagnosis and treatment. However, science alone is not enough. To ensure effective mastitis control, research needs to be inspired by, and implemented in, dairy farming practice. This demands cooperation and communication between scientists, veterinarians, extension specialists and dairy farmers worldwide. This book gives the state of the art of mastitis research internationally. The contributions reflect not only current knowledge of mastitis control, but also provide ideas for effective mastitis control in practice.

This book was released on 2007-10-12 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With detailed data from nine sites around the world, the authors examine how the so-called ‘fragmentation’ of these fragile landscapes occurs and the consequences of this break-up for ecosystems and the people who depend on them. ‘Rangelands’ make up a quarter of the world’s landscape, and here, the case is developed that while fragmentation arises from different natural, social and economic conditions worldwide, it creates similar outcomes for human and natural systems.

Download or read book Cattle Welfare in Dairy and Beef Systems written by Marie Haskell and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive coverage of all aspects of the welfare of cattle. It starts with a consideration of animal welfare science and its application to the management of cattle and moves through to discussions of the challenges and opportunities for providing good welfare for cattle in farming and husbandry systems across the globe. The first section comprises three chapters that discuss the social, behavioural and physiological methods that can be used to assess welfare in cattle. The second section considers the welfare challenges of beef and dairy cattle in extensive and intensive systems. The third section details welfare challenges such as at slaughter, during handling and in the growing period and details solutions such as the use of sensors and application of animal breeding techniques. The final section addresses welfare challenges and solutions in achieving sustainability, in smallholder farms in Africa and new entrant dairying in Asia and cow shelters in India. This work makes a valuable contribution to the field of animal welfare and modern livestock farming. It is a must-read for researchers and students, veterinarians as well as industry personnel and informed farmers and producers.

Book Geographies of Meat

  • Author : Harvey Neo
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-03-16
  • ISBN : 1317129180
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Geographies of Meat written by Harvey Neo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the ever rising demand for meat around the world, the production of meat has changed dramatically in the past few decades. What has brought about the increasing popularity and attendant normalization of factory farms across many parts of the world? What are some of the ways to resist such broad convergences in meat production and how successful are they? This book locates the answers to these questions at the intersection between the culture, science and political economy of meat production and consumption. It details how and why techniques of production have spread across the world, albeit in a spatially uneven way. It argues that the modern meat production and consumption sphere is the outcome of a complex matrix of cultural politics, economics and technological faith. Drawing from examples across the world (including America, Europe and Asia), the tensions and repercussions of meat production and consumption are also analyzed. From a geographical perspective, food animals have been given considerably less attention compared to wild animals or pets. This book, framed conceptually by critical animal studies, governmentality and commodification, is a theoretically driven and empirically rich study that advances the study of food animals in geography as well as in the wider social sciences.

Book Vets and Veterinary Services

Download or read book Vets and Veterinary Services written by Food and Rural Environment Staff and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee's report raises concerns about the numbers of large animal practitioners, since the economics of farming is leading to less use of veterinary services and further reducing the attractiveness of large animal practice. At the same time the Government's animal health and welfare and veterinary surveillance strategies appear to require a greater on-farm presence of veterinary surgeons. DEFRA needs to be aware of the impact its strategies and changes to food safety rules will have on current and future demand for vets and should review its funding of veterinary research which underpins teaching. The State Veterinary Service has a key role to play in delivering animal health and welfare and veterinary surveillance strategies, and needs to improve its links with private sector vets to ensure that all those who play a part in improving the animal health and welfare of the nation are equipped to do so.
