Book Livestock and water interactions in mixed crop livestock farming systems of Sub Saharan Africa interventions for improved productivity

Download or read book Livestock and water interactions in mixed crop livestock farming systems of Sub Saharan Africa interventions for improved productivity written by Descheemaeker, Katrien and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on mixed crop-livestock farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa, this review brings together the available knowledge in the various components of the livestock and water sectors. Through an analysis of livestock-water interactions, promising strategies and interventions to improve Livestock Water Productivity are proposed. In the biophysical domain, the numerous interventions relate to feed, water and animal management. These are interlinked with interventions in the socio-political-economic domain. The paper identifies critical research and development gaps in terms of methodologies for quantifying water productivity and integrating different scales, and also in terms of institutions and policies.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key elements of pastoral system are opportunistic management of the rangelands and mobility of the herds. This enables pastoralists to make use of natural resources, water and fodder, the availability of which varies so widely in time and space. The conventionally the core rural services demanded include research, extension and information services, Education and training. Rural financing and insurance and market promotion. Technical support services i.e. all activities related to the provision of the technical and social infrastructure (e.g. transport, supply of fuel and spare parts, planning of resettlement schemes. The average consumption of inputs and productivity dry land system is much less than mixed crop livestock highland systems. However, according to the reports in some riverine and in new settlement areas there is steady growth in consumption of agricultural inputs in last decades. The study indicated that the responsiveness existing animal health service delivery by both public sectors and private vendors was generally unsatisfactory in terms of its accessibility and availability, affordability, and quality measures. Specially, issue of accessibility, quality and effective regular service delivery is insufficient.

Book Animal health services at work in Ethiopia

Download or read book Animal health services at work in Ethiopia written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frontline animal health officers, who regularly deal with private sector stakeholders along the livestock value chain, play a fundamental role in supporting enforcement of One Health-related policies, strategies, laws and good practices. However, there's little systematic information on the way they operate on the ground, including on the constraints and challenges they face and the rules and procedures they follow when performing their duties. The FAO and the government of Ethiopia joined forces to fill this information gap and conducted a survey on a complete enumeration basis of fronline animal health officers operating in Ada'a and Sululta Districts. Results of the survey point to both institutional and procedural bottlenecks that prevent animal health officers to efficiently delivery their services on the ground, such as lack of any transport allowance, little knowledge of the existing animal health laws and regulations and unclear rules for career progression. Small investments could often suffice to address many of the identified bottlenecks.

  • Pages : 586 pages

Download or read book Tropical Animal Health written by H.S.H Seifert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-06-30 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Tropical Animal Health, describes the problems of animal diseases in the tropics, in the tropical environment, and in relation to particular production systems. In Part I, those basic scientific facts of the special host defence mechanism and of the host-pathogen relationship in the tropics, which hardly play any part in animal husbandry in temperate climates, are explained. Of special importance are the resistance mechanisms of autochthonous breeds and in contrast to them, the high susceptibility of exotic breeds in the tropics. It is explained how immuno- and chemoprophylaxis can be used as instruments for animal health measures if they are adapted to the socio-economic and ecological conditions of both the tropics and developing countries. Scientific details of immunology are presented as far as they are necessary to understand the epizo otiology of tropical diseases and diagnostic techniques for recognizing tropical diseases as well as the execution of prophylactic measures. Vector-borne diseases are the disease complexes most difficult to control since they are bound to the tropical environment, thanks to the biology of their vectors. Therefore, a special chapter has been dedicated to the description of biology and eradication of vectors of vector-borne diseases. The extent of the description varies according to the importance of the specific vector. The acaricides, insecticides and alternative methods used to control vectors are dis cussed in detail. The author has tried to present a world-wide picture, but it is not possible to cover every aspect completely.
