Book Review and Interpretation of Previous Work and New Data on the Hydrogeology of the Schwartzwalder Uranium Mine and Vicinity Jefferson County Colorado

Download or read book Review and Interpretation of Previous Work and New Data on the Hydrogeology of the Schwartzwalder Uranium Mine and Vicinity Jefferson County Colorado written by U.S. Department of the Interior and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Schwartzwalder deposit is the largest known vein type uranium deposit in the United States. Located about eight miles northwest of Golden, Colorado it occurs in Proterozoic metamorphic rocks and was formed by hydrothermal fluid flow, mineralization, and deformation during the Laramide Orogeny. A complex brittle fault zone hosts the deposit comprising locally brecciated carbonate, oxide, and sulfide minerals. Mining of pitchblende, the primary ore mineral, began in 1953 and an extensive network of underground workings was developed.

Book Uranium Mining in Virginia

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2012-09-03
  • ISBN : 0309220874
  • Pages : 359 pages

Download or read book Uranium Mining in Virginia written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-09-03 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uranium mining in the Commonwealth of Virginia has been prohibited since 1982 by a state moratorium, although approval for restricted uranium exploration in the state was granted in 2007. Uranium Mining in Virginia examines the scientific, technical, environmental, human health and safety, and regulatory aspects of uranium mining, milling, and processing as they relate to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the purpose of assisting the Commonwealth to determine whether uranium mining, milling, and processing can be undertaken in a manner that safeguards the environment, natural and historic resources, agricultural lands, and the health and well-being of its citizens. According to this report, if Virginia lifts its moratorium, there are "steep hurdles to be surmounted" before mining and processing could take place within a regulatory setting that appropriately protects workers, the public, and the environment, especially given that the state has no experience regulating mining and processing of the radioactive element. The authoring committee was not asked to recommend whether uranium mining should be permitted, or to consider the potential benefits to the state were uranium mining to be pursued. It also was not asked to compare the relative risks of uranium mining to the mining of other fuels such as coal. This book will be of interest to decision makers at the state and local level, the energy industry, and concerned citizens.

Book Practical Applications of Medical Geology

Download or read book Practical Applications of Medical Geology written by Malcolm Siegel and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-01 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume provides a framework for integrating methods and information drawn from geological and medical sciences and provides case studies in medical geology to illustrate the usefulness of this framework for crafting environmental and public health policies related to natural materials. The relevance of medical geology research to policy decisions is a topic rarely discussed, and this volume attempts to be a unique source for researchers and policy makers in the field of medical geology in addressing this gap in practical medical geology applications. The book's four sections establish this framework in detail using risk assessment, case studies, data analyses and specific medical geology techniques. Following an introduction to medical geology in the context of risk assessment and risk management, the second section discusses specific methods used in medical geology in the categories of geoscience, biomedicine, and data sources. The third section discusses the medical geology of natural materials, energy use, and environmental and workplace impacts. This section includes specific case studies in medical geology, and describes how the methods and data from the previous section are used in a medical geology analysis. The fourth section includes a guide to the medical geology literature and provides some examples of medical geology programs in Asia and Africa.

Book Detection of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines by Geophysical Methods

Download or read book Detection of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines by Geophysical Methods written by HRB-Singer, Inc. Environmental Sciences Branch and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid drainage produced by abandoned coal mines continues to cause serious water pollution problems. Without knowing the exact location of the concealed openings and the extent of the mine, source abatement techniques are virtually impossible. Drilling is the only known method for accurately determining the location and extent of the mine voids, but this is extremely expensive. This project attacks the problem through field studies of the following geophysical methods: electrical resistivity, self-potential, infrared radiometry, total field and differential magnetometry, seismic refraction and reflection, very low frequency electromagnetic and induced polarization over well-documented, drift, coal mines. Airborne infrared radiometry proved to be an excellent tool for detecting and mapping acid mine/fresh water sources, acid mine/fresh water drainage, and fracture traces under selected conditions.

Book excerpt: This is a summary of the known facts about the minerals that make up the rocks, soils, and ore deposits of Colorado. Compilation and abridgment of the literature from 1858, when gold was discovered, through 1957 (with a few additions for 1958 and 1959) is supplemented by information from unpublished sources. Designed to be of use to both professional and amateur mineralogists, the main part of the report describes the chief occurrences of 445 mineral species,42 of them first found in Colorado, together with many subspecies, varieties, and discredited "type" species. Directions for finding these localities are also given in the text. The bibliography contains more than 800 selected references to the most significant literature on the subject

Book Uranium for Nuclear Power
