Book Wolfhart Heinrichs Essays and Articles on Arabic Literature

Download or read book Wolfhart Heinrichs Essays and Articles on Arabic Literature written by Hinrich Biesterfeldt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolfhart Heinrichs’ Essays and Articles on Arabic Literature: General Issues, Terms is the first of two volumes that showcase a great number of Heinrichsʼ writings on his central field of research: Arabic literature. This volume specifically looks at poetry and rhetoric, and their indigenous theories and terminologies. Wolfhart Heinrichs (1941-2014) was James Richard Jewett Professor of Arabic at Harvard University. He is remembered as a significant adviser to Fuat Sezginʼs fundamental Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums; as an editor of and contributor to the Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second edition; and, most importantly, as an author of many independent studies on Arabic literature, many which were groundbreaking in the history of Arabic philology. He is also known for his studies on Semitic linguistics and Islamic jurisprudence. This volume collects relevant bibliographical data, offers an introductory essay on the author by his distinguished student Michael Cooperson (UCLA), and provides a selection of Wolfhart Heinrichs’ essays. The articles in this volume deal with general issues in the field that are central to pre-modern Arab and Islamic culture, and their concepts and terminologies. An index of classical authors, book titles, and technical terms concludes the volume. This volume and the accompanying volume will appeal to students and researchers in the field of Arabic and Islamic Studies, and particularly to those interested in Arabic literature.

Book Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur and Arabic Writerly Culture

Download or read book Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur and Arabic Writerly Culture written by Shawkat M. Toorawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toorawa re-evaluates the literary history and landscape of third to ninth century Baghdad by demonstrating and emphasizing the significance of the important transition from a predominantly oral-aural culture to an increasingly literate one. This transformation had a profound influence on the production of learned and literary culture; modes of transmission of learning; nature and types of literary production; nature of scholarly and professional occupations and alliances; and ranges of meanings of certain key concepts, such as plagiarism. In order to better understand these, attention is focused on a central but understudied figure, Ibn Abi Tahir Tayfur (d. 280 to 893), a writer, schoolmaster, scholar and copyist, member of important literary circles, and a significant anthologist and chronicler. This book will appeal to anyone interested in Arabic literary culture and history, and those with an interest in books, writing, authorship and patronage.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila
  • Publisher : Otto Harrassowitz Verlag
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9783447045919
  • Pages : 508 pages

Download or read book Maqama written by Jaakko Hämeen-Anttila and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time the genre of the maqama, the most widespread and popular genre of fictional prose within Arab literature, is presented in its comprehensive history. It was through its stylistic virtuosity as well as its awareness of a situation of social and intellectual crisis that the maqama, portraying the picaresque dramatic performance of a needy literary artist, won global fame. The most celebrated maqamas of Al-Hariri (d.1122) have not only formed part of the Arabic literary canon for many centuries but have inspired even extra-Arabic oriental literatures such as Hebrew and Christian-Syrian and - more lately - modern arabic theatre. (Text in englischer Sprache)
