They recorded and calculated the movements of the stars and planets, and thus laid the foundations for modern astronomy. However, their former capital, the city of Babylon, was slowly falling into ruin under the rule of the Parthian king, who occupied the country and endorsed the Greek culture. At around the time that Christ was born, the magi read in the night sky that the gods were planning changes: the Parthian king would die, and the dynasty would change. Their divination manual called the agent of this change the king of Amurru, and Amurru was their ancient name for the area from western modern-day Syria down to Israel and Jordan, where the dominant force at the time was the house of Herod. The skies could not tell them that a child would be born, since no such omen was known in their manual. However, the omens heralding the death of the king occurred on two different occasions; the first omen also foretold a very difficult birth, and the second omen was seen nine months later. It is likely that the magi included the birth in their interpretation, since the two omens are in full accordance with the two signs described in Revelation 12 in the Bible.

This feast was an extremely popular theme in fine art around the year 1500. It has left us with a large number or festive portrayal, in which the artists excel themselves in their efforts to depict exotic figures and their clothing and attributes. Hieronymus Bosch portrayed the theme a number of times. Two of his own paintings have survived. One of them is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) and the other is in the Museo del Prado (Madrid). Both paintings were copied and imitated from early on, so we know that they were appreciated. This early appreciation from Bosch's own time is striking. Over thirty early copies remain, making Bosch's interpretation one of the most popular compositions from the Low Countries of the later Middle Ages. The Bosch Research and Conservation Project has studies a number of these copies very closely. What Bosch achieved with the representation of the adoration of the magi is presented here in an accessible way and placed in the correct artistic and cultural/historical context, so that this book is well worth reading, and looking at, for both art historians and the general public.

The painting, now in the collection of the Prado, incorporates a dialogue by the painter himself. The picture has been newly conserved, and following the dialogue has been made easier by the existence of a copy in a private collection of the 1609 version of the much altered work. It has been the fascinating task of Prado curator Alejandro Vergara and the Prado conservation department to investigate the changes Rubens made and their motivation, while Joost vander Auwara provides a new analysis, employing new documents and rereading known ones, of the intentions and iconography of the original Antwerp commission.
