Download or read book Revealing Structure written by Eugene Buckley and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing from a wide range of perspectives in the analysis of grammatical structures, the papers collected in this book are unified not by linguistic subfield, but by the investigative method they employ in revealing grammatical patterns. Revealing Structure explores this style of investigation across phonology, morphology, and syntax. Dedicated to celebrated linguist Larry Hyman, author of such books as A Theory of Phonological Weight, this volume also features data from diverse languages--with a special emphasis on the languages of Africa--making it unique among existing linguistics collections.

Book Architextual Authenticity

Download or read book Architextual Authenticity written by Jason Herbeck and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction of identity has constituted a vigorous source of debate in the Caribbean from the early days of colonization to the present, and under the varying guises of independence, departmentalization, dictatorship, overseas collectivity and occupation. Given the strictures and structures of colonialism long imposed upon the colonized subject, the (re)makings of identity have proven anything but evident when it comes to determining authentic expressions and perceptions of the postcolonial self. By way of close readings of both constructions in literature and the construction of literature, Architextual Authenticity: Constructing Literature and Literary Identity in the French Caribbean proposes an original, informative frame of reference for understanding the long and ever-evolving struggle for social, cultural, historical and political autonomy in the region. Taking as its point of focus diverse canonical and lesser-known texts from Guadeloupe, Martinique and Haiti published between 1958 and 2013, this book examines the trope of the house (architecture) and the meta-textual construction of texts (architexture) as a means of conceptualizing and articulating how authentic means of expression are and have been created in French-Caribbean literature over the greater part of the past half-century - whether it be in the context of the years leading up to or following the departmentalization of France's overseas colonies in the 1940's, the wrath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, or the devastating Haiti earthquake of 2010.

Book Data Abstraction and Pattern Identification in Time series Data

Download or read book Data Abstraction and Pattern Identification in Time series Data written by Prithiviraj Muthumanickam and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data sources such as simulations, sensor networks across many application domains generate large volumes of time-series data which exhibit characteristics that evolve over time. Visual data analysis methods can help us in exploring and understanding the underlying patterns present in time-series data but, due to their ever-increasing size, the visual data analysis process can become complex. Large data sets can be handled using data abstraction techniques by transforming the raw data into a simpler format while, at the same time, preserving significant features that are important for the user. When dealing with time-series data, abstraction techniques should also take into account the underlying temporal characteristics. This thesis focuses on different data abstraction and pattern identification methods particularly in the cases of large 1D time-series and 2D spatio-temporal time-series data which exhibit spatiotemporal discontinuity. Based on the dimensionality and characteristics of the data, this thesis proposes a variety of efficient data-adaptive and user-controlled data abstraction methods that transform the raw data into a symbol sequence. The transformation of raw time-series into a symbol sequence can act as input to different sequence analysis methods from data mining and machine learning communities to identify interesting patterns of user behavior. In the case of very long duration 1D time-series, locally adaptive and user-controlled data approximation methods were presented to simplify the data, while at the same time retaining the perceptually important features. The simplified data were converted into a symbol sequence and a sketch-based pattern identification was then used to identify patterns in the symbolic data using regular expression based pattern matching. The method was applied to financial time-series and patterns such as head-and-shoulders, double and triple-top patterns were identified using hand drawn sketches in an interactive manner. Through data smoothing, the data approximation step also enables visualization of inherent patterns in the time-series representation while at the same time retaining perceptually important points. Very long duration 2D spatio-temporal eye tracking data sets that exhibit spatio-temporal discontinuity was transformed into symbolic data using scalable clustering and hierarchical cluster merging processes, each of which can be parallelized. The raw data is transformed into a symbol sequence with each symbol representing a region of interest in the eye gaze data. The identified regions of interest can also be displayed in a Space-Time Cube (STC) that captures both the temporal and contextual information. Through interactive filtering, zooming and geometric transformation, the STC representation along with linked views enables interactive data exploration. Using different sequence analysis methods, the symbol sequences are analyzed further to identify temporal patterns in the data set. Data collected from air traffic control officers from the domain of Air traffic control were used as application examples to demonstrate the results.

Book Computational Intelligence for Network Structure Analytics

Download or read book Computational Intelligence for Network Structure Analytics written by Maoguo Gong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the latest research advances in complex network structure analytics based on computational intelligence (CI) approaches, particularly evolutionary optimization. Most if not all network issues are actually optimization problems, which are mostly NP-hard and challenge conventional optimization techniques. To effectively and efficiently solve these hard optimization problems, CI based network structure analytics offer significant advantages over conventional network analytics techniques. Meanwhile, using CI techniques may facilitate smart decision making by providing multiple options to choose from, while conventional methods can only offer a decision maker a single suggestion. In addition, CI based network structure analytics can greatly facilitate network modeling and analysis. And employing CI techniques to resolve network issues is likely to inspire other fields of study such as recommender systems, system biology, etc., which will in turn expand CI’s scope and applications. As a comprehensive text, the book covers a range of key topics, including network community discovery, evolutionary optimization, network structure balance analytics, network robustness analytics, community-based personalized recommendation, influence maximization, and biological network alignment. Offering a rich blend of theory and practice, the book is suitable for students, researchers and practitioners interested in network analytics and computational intelligence, both as a textbook and as a reference work.

Book Fantasies of Identification

Download or read book Fantasies of Identification written by Ellen Samuels and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2014-04-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the roots of modern understandings of bodily identity In the mid-nineteenth-century United States, as it became increasingly difficult to distinguish between bodies understood as black, white, or Indian; able-bodied or disabled; and male or female, intense efforts emerged to define these identities as biologically distinct and scientifically verifiable in a literally marked body. Combining literary analysis, legal history, and visual culture, Ellen Samuels traces the evolution of the “fantasy of identification”—the powerful belief that embodied social identities are fixed, verifiable, and visible through modern science. From birthmarks and fingerprints to blood quantum and DNA, she examines how this fantasy has circulated between cultural representations, law, science, and policy to become one of the most powerfully institutionalized ideologies of modern society. Yet, as Samuels demonstrates, in every case, the fantasy distorts its claimed scientific basis, substituting subjective language for claimed objective fact. From its early emergence in discourses about disability fakery and fugitive slaves in the nineteenth century to its most recent manifestation in the question of sex testing at the 2012 Olympic Games, Fantasies of Identification explores the roots of modern understandings of bodily identity.
