Download or read book Male Failed Jailed written by David Maguire and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The profile of prisoners across many Western countries is strikingly similar – 95% male, predominantly undereducated and underemployed, from the most deprived neighbourhoods. This book reflects on how similarly positioned men configure masculinities against global economic shifts that have seen the decimation of traditional, manual-heavy industry and with it the disruption of long-established relations of labour. Drawing on life history interviews and classical ethnography, the book charts a group of men’s experiences pre, during and post prison. Tracking the development of masculinities from childhood to adulthood, across impoverished streets, ‘failing’ schools and inadequate state ‘care’, the book questions whether this proved better preparation for serving prison time than working in their local, service-dominated, labour markets. It integrates theories of crime, geography, economics and masculinity to take into account structural and global economic shifts as well as individual long-term perspectives in order to provide a broad examination on pathways to prison and post prison.

Download or read book Evensong A Novel written by Kate Southwood and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A penetrating and powerful novel about the deep undercurrents of love and regret in one Midwestern family. In 1939, Maggie Doud married Garfield Maguire. Now, fifty years on, she’s Margaret Maguire: a widow and a grandmother, unable to ignore the consequences of having married a cruel and arrogant man. Her daughters are strangers to each other, past hope of reconciling. Margaret’s granddaughter could be the one to break the cycle, but she can’t do it alone. Beautifully rendered and poignantly told, Evensong masterfully explores a woman’s desire for redemption and understanding at the end of her days.
Download or read book The Donnellys written by James Reaney and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2008-05-12 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the true story of an Irish family with seven sons and one daughter immigrating to Biddulph Township near London, Ontario, in 1844, The Donnellys tells the tale of mystery and truths stranger than fiction. It is the story of a secret society and a massacre that shocked the Canadian public, a story overlooked by the artistic community until Reaney’s play elevated the events to the level of legend. First published in 1975, this script takes its place among other true Canadian classics on university and college course listings and in the hearts of drama lovers everywhere. The Donnellys is a trilogy comprised of Sticks & Stones, St. Nicholas Hotel and Handcuffs, three tense and mythic tragedies that garnered critical praise at the 1973 Tarragon Theatre opening and continue to acquire accolades from professors, actors and artistic directors across the country. As with the drama of Yeats, Eliot, O’Neill, Brecht and Beckett, this rendering of a generation of Irish settlers and their brutal murder at the hands of more than thirty vigilante killers is controversial and exciting to this day. Foreword, Afterword and Chronology by James Noonan.
