At present, there are roughly over 1.3 million return emigrants in the state. Migration of workers from Kerala to the gulf countries has received the attractions among the researchers. But only a few studies existed in literature on return migration in Kerala. The important issues connected with return migration, such as the causes of return, socio-economic background of the returnees, the current activity status of the returnees, occupational mobility of the return migrants and the problems faced by them are the only area where a few studies are available. Several recent researches have dealt with the relationship between migration and entrepreneurship, analyzing the occupational choice of returnees and providing evidence of their high propensity to engage in entrepreneurial activities. But no attempt has been done regarding the entrepreneurial activities of return migrants and its determinants in Kerala. This book examine the self employment activity related to migrants characteristics, returnees' situation prior to migration and their overseas experience of migration

Book Researching International Migration

Download or read book Researching International Migration written by K. C. Zachariah and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International migration and workers’ remittances have, of late, become a significant economic and social phenomena affecting the fortunes of millions of families in the developing countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America. Yet, the measurements and methods of analysis of their impact on the individuals, families, economy, and society have not received the attention they deserve. A first-of-its-kind study of international migration, based on large-scale surveys across a span of 15 years of fieldwork, this book: includes methods of conducting field surveys, estimating migration, and analysing migration trends, remittances, selectivity, and differentials; assesses other demographic, socio-economic phenomenon, such as education, employment and women’s status; provides a methodology to evaluate remittances and their influence on the economy; and examines social costs of migration on those left behind — parents, wives and children — a neglected area in the field of migration. This handbook will be invaluable to scholars and students of migration studies, demography, development studies and sociology as well as policy-makers, administrators, academics, and non-governmental organisations in the field.

Book Return Migration and Self Employment

Download or read book Return Migration and Self Employment written by Tilman Brück and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A common finding of the migration literature is that migrants are more likely to choose self-employment upon return to their origin countries than non-migrants. This has led to the belief that return migration stimulates entrepreneurship in source countries and hence supports economic development. In this paper, we test these assertions, drawing on the Life in Kyrgyzstan Study, a rich longitudinal data set from a transition economy with high levels of international temporary migration. We find that for return migrants, self-employment is often a temporary occupational choice, suggesting that self-employment serves as a 'parking lot'. In addition, we find evidence that return migrants who were self-employed before migrating are less likely to opt for self-employment on their return, implying that migration disrupts self-employment trajectories. Both findings cast doubt on the common narrative of return migration stimulating entrepreneurship and therefore economic development.

This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last three decades migration from Kerala to the Middle East has taken place in a significant scale. According to the latest information one out of every six households working in Middle East, and it is evident that the incidence of migration is the highest among the Muslims. In recent years, the employment opportunities in Middle East have been on a decline. Further demand has shifted from unskilled to professional labour force. Because of this in labour demand and the increase in supply of labourers from other countries, there has been large-scale return migration from Middle East. Though the migration of women to the Gulf countries has been of smaller magnitude, compared to men, they still constitute a sizeable number. Though many of them has gone to the Middle East for employment in skilled and unskilled jobs, these women migrants have been returning to the state after some years stay in Gulf compared to men the women migrants and returnees have to face much more severe problems as women is the most exploited creature in the world. They have to face much more severe problems arising out of the changing socio-economic and family environment in which they have to struggle for their day-today life. Though there have been a number of studies on return migrants, no systematic attempt has been made so far to the changing roles of these migrant and returnee women migrants and the coping strategies they have adopted to survive these situations. The present study is an attempt in this direction. This study will be carried out specifically in the context of Muslim women who are socially and educationally backward compared to other communities. Because of this backwardness gulf migrant and returned Muslim women have to face more problems than other community migrants and returnees.

Book Labour Market Activity Occupational Change and Length of Stay in the Gulf

Download or read book Labour Market Activity Occupational Change and Length of Stay in the Gulf written by Mathias Czaika and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the relationship between migration duration and occupational changes, using the case of Indian expatriates in the Gulf States. De jure, permanent migration to a Gulf state is almost impossible, leaving a (renewable) temporary work visa the only option available for Indian migrants. De facto, however, 'temporary' stay can last for years or even decades, and thus, questions about the factors influencing the timing of return become relevant. This analysis, based on two rounds of the Kerala Migration Survey (KMS 2008 and 2009), aims to deepen our understanding about the relationship between return migration, labour market activity and occupational change among Indian expatriates returning from the Gulf region. In particular, we investigate whether the length of stay in the Gulf depends on migrants' occupational trajectories before, during, and after the migration experience. We find some significant effects of transitions in labour market activity on the length of stay abroad. In particular, the prospect of acquiring an occupation which entails upward social mobility (mainly in the public sector or self-employment) seems to be associated with a shorter stay in the Gulf states, whereas the prospect of post-return labour market drop-out significantly increases migration duration.

Book Return Migration and Occupational Change

Download or read book Return Migration and Occupational Change written by Nadeem Ilahi and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Return migrants exhibit a high tendency for self- over wage-employment. Using cross section data from Pakistan, the paper explores the determinants of this choice. Retirement from the domestic labor market is not a reason for opting for self-employment. The preference for non-farm self-employment is a two period process of self-selection. Migrants who expect to switch occupation to non-farm self-employment upon return save more from high transitory overseas income than their counterparts. At return, savings becomes a significant factor in the choice of self-employment over wage-employment. International migration and return have little influence on the choice of farm self-employment.
