Book Retrovirology Advances in Microbiology

Download or read book Retrovirology Advances in Microbiology written by Adeline Foley and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of viruses is known as virology. It involves the study of their sub-microscopic, parasitic particles and virus-like agents. It also focuses on their structure, classification and evolution, the ways in which they infect host cells the diseases they cause, and the ways to cure them. The study of retroviruses is known as retrovirology. A retrovirus is a kind of RNA virus. It inserts a copy of its genome in the host cell's DNA that occupies it thus changing the genome of that cell. Retroviruses are valuable research tools in molecular biology. These viruses are either single-stranded RNA or double-stranded DNA viruses. The main virion components in retroviruses are envelope, RNA, protein, etc. Retroviruses cause tumor growth and certain cancers in animals and in human beings, it causes diseases like AIDS. This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of retrovirology and recent researches in this field. The various advancements in retrovirology are glanced at and their applications, as well as ramifications are looked at in detail. This book is a vital tool for all researching and studying this field.

These viruses are either single-stranded RNA or double-stranded DNA viruses. The main viron components found in retroviruses are envelope, RNA and protein. Both animals and humans are affected by retroviruses. It causes tumor growth and certain cancers that are linked with slow infections of animals such as equine infectious anemia. Retroviruses such as HTLV-1 cause cancer called adult T-cell leukemia in human beings. Other retroviruses such as HIV cause AIDS in human beings. The treatment of diseases by retrovirus can be done with the help of antiretroviral drugs and medications. This book unravels the recent studies in the field of retrovirology. It traces the progress of this field and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. It is a vital tool for all researching or studying retrovirology, as it gives incredible insights into emerging trends and concepts.

Book excerpt: The type of RNA virus, which inserts a copy of its genome into the DNA of a host cell that it invades, and changes the genome of that cell, is known as a retrovirus. Such type of viruses are classified as single-stranded positive-sense RNA viruses. The study of retroviruses is called retrovirology. On entering the host cell's cytoplasm, the retroviruses use their own reverse transcriptase enzyme to produce DNA from their RNA genome, which is the reverse or retro of the usual pattern. Then the new DNA incorporates into the host cell genome with the help of an integrase enzyme. Some retroviruses such as Rous sarcoma virus and mouse mammary tumor virus can trigger tumor growth. Some others can cause infections like HIV. This book aims to shed light on some of the unexplored aspects of retrovirology and the recent researches in this field. It traces the progress of this field and highlights some of its key concepts and applications. It will help the readers in keeping pace with the rapid changes in this field.

This new edition contains a number of important changes and innovations including: The consideration of immunology now covers two chapters, one on innate immunity and the other on adaptive immunity, reflecting the explosion in knowledge of viral interactions with these systems. The coverage of vaccines and antivirals has been expanded and separated into two new chapters to reflect the importance of these approaches to prevention and treatment. Virus infections in humans are considered in more detail with new chapters on viral hepatitis, influenza, vector-borne diseases, and exotic and emerging viral infections, complementing an updated chapter on HIV. The final section includes three new chapters on the broader aspects of the influence of viruses on our lives, focussing on the economic impact of virus infections, the ways we can use viruses in clinical and other spheres, and the impact that viruses have on the planet and almost every aspect of our lives. A good basic understanding of viruses is important for generalists and specialists alike. The aim of this book is to make such understanding as accessible as possible, allowing students across the biosciences spectrum to improve their knowledge of these fascinating entities.
