Book excerpt: Where does education happen? In classrooms. Teachers can provide the ultimate reform of education and teachers can be the ultimate reformers of education. Still, teachers cannot create all of the needed improvements in education alone. Input from, involvement from, ideas from, and participation from many other people can combine with what only teachers know about education to create the educational improvements which are sought year after year. School administrators, parents, guardians, school board members, community members, community organizations, politicians and other people can join in a grass-roots effort which agrees on a shared purpose for schools and on a way to improve schools so the purpose of a school – to cause learning – is realized.

Book Memoir of a Retired Teacher

Download or read book Memoir of a Retired Teacher written by Edes C. Solina and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Memoir of a Retired Teacher, author Edes Solina shares her concern that there is a real problem in education today: American children are performing at levels significantly below the skill levels of many countries in mathematics and science exams. College instructors are asking why such a large number of high school graduates are not prepared for college work in these and other subject areas. The United States has the best quality of college or higher education in the whole world, but the quality of education in high school is below acceptable levels for college entrance. She believes the root cause of the substandard performance of American students is the serious disruption caused by discipline problems taking place in the classroom today. Teachers need help in finding positive methods for turning the tide before its too late. She believes that the schools need to allow the teachers to focus every minute of the class period on teaching and learning activities without the constant disruption from the rampant discipline problems plaguing their classrooms. Memoir of a Retired Teacher is Solinas life story in three parts: in the first part, she looks back on the final days of her teaching career; in the second part she remembers her teaching experiences; and in the final part she recounts her lifes journey.

Download or read book Stories and Insights written by Frank Alan Dole and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes life lessons and observations from the world of the terminally ill and offers inspirational and instructional stories. In this journey we call life, there are always teachers and mentors who have gone before us and students who follow after us. Picturing this concept, I envision three people on a wooden bridge crossing a stream. The position of these three people shows the one in front, which would be the mentor, one in the middle, a student and also a mentor to the one following. In the broader picture each person has another in front and another behind capturing the idea we are always a mentor / teacher and always the student. My heart's desire with these stories is to both illustrate this principle and honor those who mentored me.

Book One Heart One Way

Download or read book One Heart One Way written by Gregory M. Cook and published by East Lawrencetown, N.S. : Pottersfield Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born near Windsor, Nova Scotia, poet, journalist and novelist Alden Nowlan challenged the apparent disadvantages of poverty, and a mere four grades of formal education, to publish 25 books, including three plays. Haunted by ghosts of his early life, Nowlan nevertheless discovered the ultimate "exchange of gifts" in the love of his wife and son. They fueled his bravery in plumbing the depths of human loneliness and confessing love's most tender expressions. Nowlan's empathy with society's poor, as well as the earth beneath his feet, finds him cited as often in medical school, pulpit, or military mess, as in the work of the poets he inspired. He lived long enough in his 50 years to appreciate the sternest discipline: "The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult; the day he forgives himself, he becomes wise." His writing earned him two honorary degrees and numerous awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship and the 1968 Governor General's Award For Poetry. That same year he became writer in residence at The University of New Brunswick, a position he filled until his death in 1983. Gregory M. Cook, the author of five books of poetry, became a close friend of Alden Nowlan during the last 20 years of his extraordinary life. The day they met for the senior poet's first published interview, Cook records magic moments of Nowlan's paternal and romantic love, his phenomenal compassion for the less fortunate other, and his intrinsic intelligence that was exhibited in his life and his works. Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Gregory Cook graduated from Acadia University. He has worked as a preacher, newspaper reporter, dramatist, freelance journalist, and Executive Director of the Writers' Federation of
